Stuart Hall, Totem-Nesnesiz Kimlikler ve Hayali/ İmgesel Temsiller

    No full text

Going to the Polls or Feeding Children? An Empirical Investigation of Voter Turnout among Turkish Women with Children at Home

    No full text
This study is based on a data set published in the 2013 Turkey Demographic and Health Survey. The ordered logit econometric model is applied to examine the effects of the fertility preferences of women on their electoral participation. The results indicate that the number of children a woman has is negatively related to her electoral participation. The results also show that compared with women who had an additional child under six years and women who had an additional child between nine and thirteen years, women who had an additional child between six and nine years were less likely to vote. The estimation results indicate that married, educated, and high-income women are more likely to vote. These results also show that married women are more likely to vote when their income level increases. The estimation results also indicate that higher wealth status and educational attainment increase the electoral participation of women who have at least one child who is six years or younger. Moreover, the results indicate that the electoral participation of older women having a child at six years or younger is lower

    No full text
In this study, alpha-TCP and beta-TCP were successfully produced via a mechanochemical method from aragonite structures, Clinocardium ciliatum seashells, at 850 degrees C, 1000 degrees C, and 1200 degrees C sintering temperatures. The characterization of the obtained materials was carried out via FT-IR, SEM/EDX, BET, XRD, ICP-OES analysis. Samples were soaked for 21 days in simulated body fluid (SBF) for a bioactivity test. Additionally, MTT assay was applied to determine the cell viability of samples. Bioactivity in vitro tests showed that bone-like hydroxyapatite formed when the alpha-TCP and beta-TCP were soaked in SBF. TCP bioceramics had a noncytotoxicity effect on SAOS-2 osteoblast-like cells and cell viability increased in 1 to 7 days. The produced bioceramics have ideal pore sizes and properties that are suitable for supporting biological activities. Tris-HCl buffer solution was used to obtain the level of biodegradation. It was seen that alpha-TCP exhibited better dissolution features than beta-TCP

Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation in the Treatment of Eating Disorders - A Narrative Review

    No full text
#nofulltext# --- İnce, Başak (Arel Author)ObjectiveTreatment success in many patients with eating disorders (ED) is not substantial and sustainable. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the advancement of existing treatment approaches and novel innovative interventions. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) is such an innovative approach which has recently been introduced to the treatment of ED patients. This article is a narrative review concerning the most frequently used brain stimulation techniques in ED and the current evidence concerning the efficacy of treatment. MethodsWe conducted a literature search in the PubMed database concerning the topic NIBS in ED and identified 32 relevant articles. Only 9 of these articles described empirical studies in patients with ED. ResultsThe studies were conducted in patients with different ED diagnoses, regarding different treatment targets, used different stimulation techniques and showed differences in frequency, duration and intensity of the stimulation. Some, but not all of these studies suggest ameliorations of ED symptoms, e. g. reduction of food craving, restrictive eating and ED-related cognitions. DiscussionEvidence is scarce and heterogeneous, but overall, the evidence suggests that NIBS is a promising treatment approach in ED

    Cross section measurement of e(+) e(-) -> eta ' J/psi from root S=4.178 to 4.600 GeV

    No full text
The cross section of the process e(+) e(-) -> eta ' J/ psi is measured at center-of-mass (c.m.) energies from root S = 4.178 to 4.600 GeV using data samples corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 11 fb(-1) collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. The dependence of the cross section on root S shows an enhancement around 4.2 GeV. While the shape of the cross section cannot be fully explained with a single psi(4160) or psi(4260) state, a coherent sum of the two states does provide a reasonable description of the data

Harmonic analysis of steady-state visual evoked potentials in brain computer interfaces

    No full text
The signals generated in the occipital lobe of the brain, as a result of visual stimuli flickering at a certain frequency, are called steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs). Spectral properties of the SSVEPs are extracted to use in classification stage in SSVEP based brain-computer interfaces. However, there has been no previous study examining the effects of SSVEP harmonics on classification performance. The frequency spectrum of an SSVEP consists of harmonics at frequencies that are integer multiples of the stimulus signal frequency. In this study, the effects of the first four harmonics of SSVEPs in classification performance were investigated. Total and relative band power values, extracted from various combinations of the first four harmonics of SSVEPs, are used as features. Due to the quasi-sinusoidal nature of SSVEPs, it has been observed that the classification made by the features extracted from the second harmonic gives better results than the classification made by the features extracted from the first harmonic. In addition, if more than one harmonic is used in feature extraction, it was observed that the best classification performance was obtained with the properties extracted from the set of 1st, 2nd and 4th harmonics, in almost all cases. Furthermore a statistical study was performed by applying variance analysis to the obtained data to verify the significance of the results

Genome-Guided Mass Spectrometry Expedited the Discovery of Paraplantaricin TC318, a Lantibiotic Produced byLactobacillus paraplantarumStrain Isolated From Cheese

    No full text
The quest for potent alternatives to the currently used antimicrobials is urged by health professionals, considering the rapid rise in resistance to preservatives and antibiotics among pathogens. The current study was initiated to search for novel and effective bacteriocins from food microbes, preferably lactic acid bacteria (LAB), for potential use as preservatives. Advances in genome-guided mass spectrometry (MS) were implemented to expedite identifying and elucidating the structure of the recovered antimicrobial agent. A LAB strain, OSY-TC318, was isolated from a Turkish cheese, and the crude extract of the cultured strain inhibited the growth of various pathogenic and spoilage bacteria such asBacillus cereus,Clostridium sporogenes,Enterococcus faecalis,Listeria monocytogenes,Salmonella entericaser. Typhimurium, andStaphylococcus aureus. The antimicrobial producer was identified asLactobacillus paraplantarumusing MS biotyping and genomic analysis. Additionally,L. paraplantarumOSY-TC318 was distinguished from closely related strains using comparative genomic analysis. Based onin silicoanalysis, the genome of the new strain contained a complete lantibiotic biosynthetic gene cluster, encoding a novel lantibiotic that was designated as paraplantaricin TC318. The bioinformatic analysis of the gene cluster led to the prediction of the biosynthetic pathway, amino acid sequence, and theoretical molecular mass of paraplantaricin TC318. To verify the genomic analysis predictions, paraplantaricin TC318 was purified from the producer cellular crude extract using liquid chromatography, followed by structural elucidation using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance MS analysis. This genome-guided MS analysis revealed that the molecular mass of paraplantaricin TC318 is 2,263.900 Da, its chemical formula is C106H133N27O22S4, and its primary sequence is F-K-S-W-S-L-C-T-F-G-C-G-H-T-G-S-F-N-S-F-C-C. This lantibiotic, which differs from mutacin 1140 at positions 9, 12, 13, and 20, is considered a new member of the epidermin group in class I lantibiotics. In conclusion, the study revealed a newL. paraplantarumstrain producing a novel lantibiotic that is potentially useful in food and medical applications

Ciprofloxacin-loaded polymeric nanoparticles incorporated electrospun fibers for drug delivery in tissue engineering applications

    No full text
Presented work focuses on the development of biodegradable polymer nanoparticles loaded with antibiotics as drug delivery systems deposited on electrospun scaffolds for tissue engineering. The innovative ciprofloxacin-loaded poly(dl-lactide-co-glycolide) NPs ensure a continuous slow release and high local concentration at the site of action for an optimal therapy. The local delivery of antibiotics as an integrated part of electrospun scaffolds offers an effective, safe, and smart enhancement supporting tissue regeneration. Presented data provides solid scientific evidence for fulfilling the requirements of local nano antibiotic delivery systems with biodegradability and biocompatibility for a wide range of tissue engineering applications, including middle ear tissues (e.g., tympanic membranes) which are subject to bacterial infections. Further characterization of such systems, including in vivo studies, is required to ensure successful transfer from lab to clinical applications

Measurement of J/psi -> Xi(1530+)(-) (Xi)over-bar(+) and evidence for the radiative decay Xi(153)(-) -> gamma Xi(-)

    No full text
The SU(3)-flavor violating decay J/psi -> Xi(1530)(-) (Xi) over bar (+) + c.c. is studied using (1310.6 +/- 7.0) x 10(6) J/psi events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, and the branching fraction is measured to be B(J/psi -> Xi(1530)(-) (Xi) over bar (+) + c.c.) = (3.17 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.08(syst)) x 10(-4). This result is consistent with previous measurements with an order of magnitude improved precision. The angular parameter for this decay is measured for the first time and is found to be alpha = -0.21 +/- 0.04(stat) +/- 0.06(syst). In addition, we report evidence for the radiative decay Xi(1530)(-) -> gamma Xi(-) with a significance of 3.9 sigma, including the systematic uncertainties. The 90% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction is determined to be B(Xi(1530)(-) -> gamma Xi(-)) <= 3.7%
