Fear is a human emotion that allows a person to survive. It has a function to ensure the continuity of life. The definition of fear has changed over time. Along with human development, transition to sedentary life, the industrial revolution, and modern life, fear and the things feared have changed. Fear has started to be marketed, especially in post-industrial societies. The governments have seen that fear and violence work to regulate, control, and passivate people. Political governments have had the unique opportunity to use fear as a mechanism for control and surveillance. The governments have aestheticized the fear and presented it indirectly with the support of media. The masses have been shaped as weak, scared, anxious, and helpless in the shadow of fear and violence. This study tries to shed light on the attempt to persuade the society about the legitimacy of the military government by presenting fear and violence to people in aestheticized forms in the 1980s in Turkey. © 2023, IGI Global. Effects of different polyphenol-rich herbal teas on reducing predicted glycemic index

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different polyphenol-rich herbal teas on reducing the in vitro starch digestibility of white bread and evaluation of predicted glycemic indexes. Generally, except for the goji berry treatment, all herbal teas reduced the starch digestibility and predicted glycemic index of white bread. Compared to untreated white bread, the rapidly digestible starch levels were decreased by 10% and 12% in the turmeric tea treatment. In addition, hydrolysis indexes were decreased by 12% and 10% in the black tea treatment compared to untreated white bread. The turmeric treatment on white bread reduced the predicted glycemic index more than other teas. It is thought that the curcumin in turmeric has more inhibitory effects on a-amylase activity than other teas. We also demonstrated that dietary polyphenols such as anthocyanins and catechins found in herbal teas might reduce starch digestion by inhibiting a-amylase and a-glucosidase thereby lowering the glycemic index of foods

    No full text
Aim: The knowledge, attitude and practice level of the people about the disease can provide data on behavioral change for the health authorities. This study aims to measure the knowledge, attitude, and practice levels of people living in Turkey towards COVID-19 and determine their anxiety levels. Material and Methods: Eight hundred sixty people were reached through online surveys between May 20-30, 2020. Along with questions measuring demographic features, Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) Towards COVID-19 and Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) were used in the research. Descriptive statistical analysis, chi-square tests, t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), multiple linear regression analyses, and logistic regression analysis were used in the study. Results: The overall mean of the KAP scale was 10.65 +/- 1.26. This shows that Turkish people have a high level of knowledge about COVID-19. Moreover, the overall mean of the anxiety scale was 1.96 +/- 3.30, and the general anxiety levels of the participants were determined to be very low. Most of the participants showed positive attitudes towards the successful control of COVID-19 (65.9%) and Turkey's ability to defeat the disease (82.1%). Discussion: It can be stated that this study is important because it is the first study evaluating the KAP and CAS levels for COVID-19 in Turkey. As a result, health education programs and awareness-raising activities targeting individuals with less knowledge about COVID-19 can be important in controlling the outbreak

Objective: Communication difficulties are considered the most significant consequence of hearing loss. This study aimed to determine whether surgical face masks, which have been mandatory throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, have an effect on speech comprehension scores in geriatric lip-reading patients with hearing loss and to raise awareness of the need for solutions to this problem. Materials and Method: Patients with moderate and higher sensorineural or mixed bilateral symmetrical hearing loss who stated that they lip-read to better understand during communication were included in the study. The patients’ speech comprehension scores were gathered while the audiologist wore a surgical mask and then a transparent mask, respectively. Results: Twelve (33,3%) of the patients were female, and 24 (66.7%) were male. The mean age of the patients was 66.64±1.53 years. The mean speech comprehension scores of the patients when the audiologist was wearing a surgical mask (38.25±14.33) and a transparent mask (67.81 ± 14.30), respectively, were compared. The surgical mask significantly affected speech comprehension scores, and the Cohen d value of the effect size was 2.06. As such, the surgical face mask had a great effect on these patients’ speech comprehension scores. Conclusions: In elderly lip-reading patients who suffer from hearing loss, seeing the lip movements of the speaker, especially in hospital applications, promotes more effective communication. Transparent face masks can be considered a solution. © 2022, Geriatrics Society. All rights reserved

    No full text
The aim of this study was to evaluate hate speech in Turkish LGBTI+-related tweets during a one-month period of artificial intelligence-based sentiment analyses. Turkish tweets related to LGBTI+, were retrieved using Python library Tweepy and were evaluated by sentiment analysis. The researchers then performed a qualitative analysis of the most frequently liked and retweeted tweets (n = 556). Sentiment analysis revealed that 69.5% of tweets were negative, 23.3% were neutral, and 7.2% were positive. The qualitative analysis was grouped under seven themes: LGBTI+ Club; Terrorism and Terrorist Organization Membership; Perversion, Illness, Immorality; Presence in History; Religious References; Insults; and Humiliation. The results of this study show that anti-LGBTI+ hate speech in Turkey is significant in terms of both quality and quantity. As LGBTI+ individuals are at risk for excess mental distress and disorders, it is important to understand the risks and other factors that ameliorate stress and contribute to mental health in social media. © 2023 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

    No full text

    No full text
Introduction: Today, occupational diseases are growing more and more significant. This study aims to determine pre-hospital health workers' degree of awareness regarding the risk factors they can run into related to occupational diseases and the factors that affect them. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The study's sample population consists of 504 pre-hospital emergency medical services employees in Elazig province. The sample group has not been chosen, and the entire population is intended to be reached. The questionnaire consists of 25 questions. Face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire were conducted on a volunteer basis. The rate of participating in the survey was 84.6%. The collected data were entered into a statistical package program. For statistical analysis, Fisher's Exact and Chi-square tests were performed. Results: The participants' average age was 30,61±9,83. Women comprised 59.6% of the workforce, 55.4% of those employed at district health facilities, and 40.9% were paramedics. 90,2% of the participants voluntarily choose the occupation. 93% of workers believed that musculoskeletal illnesses were a danger associated with their line of work. The risk of exposure to violence was the top "stress-generating issue" for 69.6% of workers. Conclusion: The majority of respondents willingly chose the profession. Most frequently, ergonomic issues are considered to be risk factors for employment. Long night shift hours and a misfit night shift coworker are sources of high stress for doctors and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) respectively. It is suggested that health professionals receive more training on occupational diseases, that they become more sensitive to various biological and chemical risk factors, with the exception of common viruses like HBV transmission, and it is recommended to take further action against violence. Keywords: Occupational diseases, health workers, risk factors, emergency medical services, ergonomic
