    Acute sleep deprivation: impairment of biventricular function assesed by speckle tracking echocardiography in healthy subjects

    ObjectivesSleep deprivation (SD) has been found to be associated with an increased incidence of adverse cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. The aim of this study was to investigate whether or not acute SD has a pathological effect on the geometry and the systolic and diastolic functions of the right and left heart chambers by standard transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) in healthy individuals with acute SD.MethodsNurses with no history of acute or chronic diseases underwent TTE and STE after working a night shift, a sleepless period of 24 h and 7 days of normal sleep after the night shift. Measurements of TTE and STE taken in the rested state were compared with those taken after 24 h of sleep deprivation.ResultsThe study included 52 nurses (38 women, 73%). The mean age of the study population was 27.9 +/- 7.4 years and mean BMI was 24.1 +/- 4.8. Left atrial reservoir (51.5 +/- 13.5 vs. 45.4 +/- 10; p = 0.004), conduit (- 37.3 +/- 11.3 vs. - 33.6 +/- 7.9; p = 0.01), left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LVGLS, - 22.6 +/- 2.4 vs. - 21.3 +/- 2.4; p = 0.001), right ventricular global longitudinal strain (RVGLS, - 25.3 +/- 3.7 vs. - 23.5 +/- 3.9; p = 0.005) and right ventricular free wall longitudinal strain (RVFWSL, - 29.1 +/- 4.2 vs. - 27 +/- 4.5; p = 0.001) were impaired significantly after SD.ConclusionThis study is the first to investigate the negative effects of acute sleep deprivation on LV and RV strain in healthy adults using echocardiography. The findings showed that acute sleep deprivation leads to deterioration in function of both ventricles and left atrium. Speckle tracking echocardiography demonstrated subclinical diminished heart function

    SARKOM PATOGENEZİNDE ETKİLİ OLABİLECEK YENİ ADAY GENLERİN ARAŞTIRILMASI

    Amaç: Nükleer tıpta radyonüklit tedavilerde çalışan radyasyon görevlilerinin uzun dönemde maruz kaldığı radyasyon dozlarının belirlenmesi ve rutin olarak yapılan her bir tedavi prosedürünün bu dozlara katkısının belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: 6 yıl boyunca rutin olarak İyot-131 (131I) tedavisi, (Lutesyum-177 (177Lu) tedavisi, Yittrium-90 (90Y) mikrosfer tedavisi ve 131I MIBG (Meta-İyodobenzilguanidin) tedavisi uygulayan doktor, hemşire, sağlık fizikçisi, radyofarmasist ve temizlik personelinin kişisel dozimetri kayıtları geriye dönük olarak incelendi. Aynı dönemde gerçekleştirilmiş olan tedavi sayıları ve bu tedavilerde görevli olanlar belirlendi. Bu bilgilerden radyasyon görevlilerinin tedavilerdeki absorbe radyasyon dozları ile prosedür başına doz değerleri çıkarıldı. Bulgular: Yıllık ortalama radyasyon dozları en yüksek radyofarmasistlerde 2185±1839 µSv bulundu. Hemşirelerde 786±943 µSv, sağlık fizikçilerinde 753±706 µSv, doktorlarda 626±741 µSv ve temizlik görevlisi personellerde 961±1099 µSv olarak hesaplandı. Prosedür başına hesaplanan ortalama doz değerleri en yüksek doktorlarda 129±208 μSv olarak bulundu. Hemşirelerde 122±187 μSv, sağlık fizikçilerinde 76±122 μSv, radyofarmasistlerde 76±52 μSv, temizlik görevlisi personellerde 42±64 μSv bulundu. Sonuç: Radyofarmasötiklerin hazırlanması sırasında, hastaya uygulanması sırasında ve hastanın tedavi servisinde yattığı süre boyunca doz aşımı olmamış, belirlenen radyasyon dozlarının izin verilen güvenli değerlerde olduğu tespit edilmiştir

    Tomris Uyar, Türk öykücülüğünün önemli isimlerindendir. Uyar’ın 1983 yılında yayımlanan Gecegezen Kızlar adlı öykü kitabı metinlerarasılık kuramı ve geleneğin devamlılığı noktasında önem arz eden bir eser olarak karşımıza çıkar. Yazar, anonim halk edebiyatının önemli bir türü olan masalların kahramanlarını, yarattığı öykülerin evreni içerisine yerleştirip toplumsal ve politik meselelere değinen çok katmanlı öyküler kaleme almıştır. Bir çeşit yeniden yaratım olan metinlerarasılık pek çok yöntemiyle bu eserde görülmektedir. Uyar, bu yeniden yaratımı halk edebiyatının en yaygın türlerinden olan masallar aracılığıyla gerçekleştirmiştir. Yazar, ilişki kurduğu masalları, öykülerini güçlendirmek ve “Masal kahramanları çağımızda yaşasaydı nasıl yaşam sürerlerdi?” sorusuna alternatif bir cevap üretebilmek amacıyla kullanmıştır. Yazarın masallarla kurduğu metinlerarası ilişkilerin yanı sıra öykülerinde halk edebiyatına ait nazım parçalarına yer vermesi, modern Türk edebiyatı içerisinde halk edebiyatıyla ilişki kurmak olarak algılanan geleneğin aktarımını yapması yönünden önemlidir. Tüm bunların ışığında yazar parodi, pastiş, kolaj gibi metinlerarası yöntemlerden, diyalog, leitmotif, gibi anlatım tekniklerinden yararlanıp yoğun öyküler var etmiştir. Sözlü ve yazılı gelenek aktarıcılığı folklor ürünlerinde önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Halk kültürüne ait temelde sözlü olan edebi ürünler, kurmaca eserlere de kaynaklık edebilmektedir. Masal, destan, efsane gibi halk edebiyatı ürünleri, geleneksel aktarımlarının dışında yeniden kurgulanarak modern aktarım unsurları olmuşlardır.     Observation of ψ(3770) → ηJ/ψ

    Using a data sample collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, the Born cross section of the process e+e- -> eta J=psi at a center-of-mass energy pffisffi = 3.773 GeV is measured to be (8.88 +/- 0.87 +/- 0.42) pb. We fit the cross section line shape before correcting for the initial state radiation ffiffifromps = 3.773 to 4.600 GeV to obtain the branching fraction B(psi(3770) -> eta J=psi). We obtain B(psi(3770) -> eta J=psi) = (11.3 +/- 5.9 +/- 1.1) x 10-4 when the psi(3770) decay amplitude is added coher-ently to the other contributions, and (8.7 +/- 1.0 +/- 0.8) x 10-4 when it is added incoherently. Here the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. In both cases, the statistical significance of psi(3770) resonance is above 7 sigma. This is the first time the decay psi(3770) -> eta J=psi is observed with a statistical significance greater than 5 sigma

    Po-210 activity concentrations in wild and farmed fish from the Aegean Sea and Sea of Marmara and dose assessment to consumers

    Polonium (Po-210) is the major contributor (with approximately 90%) to the radiation dose from radionuclides contained in the human diet, and it is mostly associated with seafood. This study presents Po-210 activity concentrations in the tissues of 16 fish species from the Aegean Sea and Sea of Marmara. Among all species investigated, the highest Po-210 activity concentration was 4450 & PLUSMN; 33 Bq kg(-1) dry weight (dw) in the digestive tract of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), and the lowest Po-210 activity concentration was 1.3 & PLUSMN; 0.6 Bq kg(-1) (dw) in the muscle tissue of the thornback ray (Raja clavata). Significant differences in Po-210 concentrations were consistently found among the tissues of fish (P < 0.05). In general, the prominent accumulation of Po-210 was observed in the digestive tract and liver while the muscle tissue generally displayed the lower concentrations. Polonium concentrations in the internal organs, such as muscle and liver, were related to the feeding ecology of fish and thus are a consequence of Po-210 transfer in the food chain rather than Po-210 uptake from water. The average Po-210 concentration in fish filet was 54.1 Bq kg(-1) dw and to attain the recommended limit for the annual committed effective dose (1 mSv year(-1)) would require the consumption of 1024 kg of mixed fish filet in 1 year, which is unlikely to happen. The highest Po-210 activity concentration in the edible part of fish (filet) was determined in the anchovy (E. encrasicolus) but to reach the 1 mSv year(-1) limit would require still the consumption of 7.1 kg year(-1) of anchovy filet. Similar size specimens of wild and farmed fish, Dicentrarchus labrax and Sparus aurata, were analyzed to assess the differences in Po-210 concentrations. Polonium concentrations in the wild fish were several-fold higher than in farmed specimens, these ones fed with fish feed with Po-210 content lower than natural food in the sea. Therefore, the current trend of increasing the consumption of seafood from aquaculture seems to be reducing the radiation exposure to Po-210 in the human diet that is considered beneficial to public health

    This article analyses Turkish foreign policy towards the United States (US) during the Justice and Development Party (JDP) era by using a post-structuralist approach. Post-structuralism posits that foreign policy is a political practice reflecting domestic power struggles. Moreover, subjectivities and foreign policy practices are neither universal, objective, nor predetermined, since they are co-constitutive. From this theoretical perspective, the article explores the JDP’s 'foreign policy' discourse on US-Turkish relations, highlighting discursive practices in legitimising specific subjectivities, such as 'conservative' and 'Muslim' ones, as 'inherent' origins of foreign policy conduct. In two phases, 2002–2009 and 2009–2016, it analyses how changes in JDP’s foreign policy preferences towards the US function to legitimise or marginalise particular subjectivities in its power struggle vis-à-vis 'Kemalist' state elites. Ultimately, the article concludes that the JDP’s discourse exhibits a continuity in hegemonising the 'Islamic' subjectivity ascribed to the Turkish population, despite changes in foreign policy decisions. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

    Introduction: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that patients undergoing ACL reconstruction with quadrupled semitendinosus suspensory femoral and tibial fixation have comparable results in muscle strength and knee function to those undergoing ACL reconstruction with four-strand semitendinosus-gracilis suspensory femoral fixation and a bioabsorbable tibial interference screw fixation. Materials and Methods: Between 2017 and 2019, 64 patients who were operated on by the same surgeon were included. Patients underwent ACL reconstruction technique with quadrupled semitendinosus suspensory femoral and tibial button fixation in Group 1, and patients underwent ACL reconstruction with coupled four-strand semitendinosus-gracilis suspensory femoral fixation and a bioabsorbable tibial interference screw in Group 2. Evaluation of patients was performed with the Lysholm and Tegner activity scale preoperatively and at the 1st and 6th months postoperatively. At the 6-month visit, isokinetic testing of the operated and non-operated limbs was performed in both groups. Results: There was no significant difference in the age, weight, and BMI values of the patients in Groups 1 and 2 (p < 0.05). According to the strength values of the operated sides of the patients in Group 1 and Group 2, there was no significant difference in the angular velocities of 60 & DEG; s(-1), 180 & DEG; s(-1,) and 240 & DEG; s(-1) in both extension and flexion phases between the operated sides of Groups 1 and 2 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Patients who have ACL reconstruction with quadrupled semitendinosus suspensory femoral and tibial fixation have comparable muscle strength and knee function to those who undergo ACL reconstruction with four-strand semitendinosus-gracilis suspensory femoral fixation and a bioabsorbable tibial interference screw

    The mediating role of self-compassion in the relationship between internalized stigma and psychological resilience in bipolar disorder

    Introduction: Internalized stigma is known to be high in bipolar disorder (BD). Concepts such as self-compassion and psychological resilience have recently begun to be studied as protective factors for BD. The aim of the current study was to examine the relationships between internalized stigma, self-compassion and resilience among individuals with BD. Method: One hundred and thirty-two male and female (18-65 years of age) participants with a DSM 5 diagnosis of BD (BD- I & BD- II) were included. The remission criteria (YMRS< 5 and HDRS< 7) was evaluated using clinician-administered measures and all participants were found to be remitted. Correlation and mediation analyses were performed. Participants completed the Internalized Stigma in Mental Illness Scale (ISMI), the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and the Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA). Results: Significant correlations were found between internalized stigma, sub-dimensions of self-compassion (self-kindness, self-judgement, common humanity, isolation, mindfulness, and over-identification), and resilience in the expected directions like negative correlations between internalized stigma and positive dimensions of self-compassion (self-kindness, common humanity and mindfulness). Self-judgement and self-kindness mediated the relationship between internalized stigma and psychological resilience. Conclusions: The findings of the study shed light on which dimensions of self-compassion might be more beneficial to work with in order to increase resilience when working with internalized stigma in BD. This strengths-based investigation would be valuable to enrich psycho-social interventions for the prevention of relapse in BD

    In the quest for histone deacetylase inhibitors: current trends in the application of multilayered computational methods

    Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors have gained attention over the past three decades because of their potential in the treatment of different diseases including various forms of cancers, neurodegenerative disorders, autoimmune, inflammatory diseases, and other metabolic disorders. To date, 5 HDAC inhibitor drugs are marketed for the treatment of hematological malignancies and several drug-candidate HDAC inhibitors are at different stages of clinical trials. However, due to the toxic side effects of these drugs resulting from the lack of target selectivity, active studies are ongoing to design and develop either class-selective or isoform-selective inhibitors. Computational methods have aided the discovery of HDAC inhibitors with the desired potency and/or selectivity. These methods include ligand-based approaches such as scaffold hopping, pharmacophore modeling, three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationships (3D-QSAR); and structure-based virtual screening (molecular docking). The current trends involve the application of the combination of these methods and incorporating molecular dynamics simulations coupled with Poisson-Boltzmann/molecular mechanics generalized Born surface area (MM-PBSA/MM-GBSA) to improve the prediction of ligand binding affinity. This review aimed at understanding the current trends in applying these multilayered strategies and their contribution to the design/identification of HDAC inhibitors

    Calculation of the T-X phase diagram and the thermodynamic quantities for the binary mixtures of Tetradecane plus Hexadecane using the Landau mean field model

    The Landau model is used to calculate the T - X phase diagram and the temperature dependence of the thermodynamic quantities near the phase transitions in the binary mixtures of tetradecane + hexadecane. The phase line equations are fitted to the experimental T - X phase diagram (liquidus + solid solution + solidus) and to the temperature dependence of the enthalpy for the solid (triclinic) solution + solid (rotator) solution from the literature for this binary mixture. By determining the fitted parameters, the thermodynamic quantities are calculated near the phase transitions in the tetradecane + hexadecane. Our T- X phase diagram explains the observed behaviour of the transitions for the binary mixtures studied. On the basis of the experimental enthalpy, calculated thermodynamic quantities exhibit the expected critical behaviour near the phase transitions from the Landau mean field model, which can be compared with the experimental data for tetradecane + hexadecane
