Turkey's war on the PKK in the 1980s
This article aims to demonstrate how counterterrorism tactics abnormalize particular geographic areas by subjectifying communities as elements of this milieu to regulate and control the movements of ‘terrorists.’ Borrowing from Ashley and Campbell, this aspect of counterterrorism calls for it to be viewed as a ‘boundary-producing’ practice. Through a close examination of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Proceedings Journal, which documents parliamentary debates on the Turkish War on Terror in the 1980s, this article discusses how the Southeastern Anatolia Region, where a significant Kurdish population lives, is abnormalized as an unfriendly, bordering, and uncivilized space. As a result, violent acts and policies of the state, such as cross-border operations, mass deportations, and restrictions on civil liberties in the name of developmentalism, have been institutionalized, redrawing the boundaries between the Region and the rest of the country. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group
DETERMINATION OF PROTEIN VALUE AND WATER ABSORPTION IN CHICKPEA (CICER AIIETINUM L.) SEEDS DURING GERMINATION
Protein and water absorption values were investigated in Cagatay and Gokhoyuk varieties of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) seeds after germination. The crude protein content were determined as 29.14% by dry weight in Cagatay and 26.13% in Gokhoyuk varieties respectively. Following imbibition, the amount of water absorption increased up to approximately 50% to 60% in both varieties. Crude protein content increased by 10.4% and 14.2% and carbohydrate content increased by 0.45% and 0.41% respectively for Cagatay and Gokhoyuk varieties of chickpea seeds. In addition, total viability of microorganisms, yeasts and molds were also determined after germination. Inactivation of microorganisms (including yeast and molds) to acceptable safe limits were noted, after soaking in hot water at 95° C for five minutes. © 2023,Carpathian Journal of Food Science and Technology. Effect of lithological properties of beach sediments on plastic pollution in Bodrum Peninsula (SW Türkiye)
The effects grain size on transport and retention of plastics in sediments are controversial issue. Four beaches were selected on the Bodrum Peninsula (SW Türkiye) for this study. Twenty-four samples with poorly to well sorted, sandy gravel, gravel, or gravelly sand were collected from the top five cm of the sampling quadrant's four corners and center of 1 m2 area, from shoreline and backshore. The highest plastic content (38 mesoplastics/600 g – 455 microplastics (MPs)/1200 g) was determined on the Bodrum Coast having the highest population. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyurethane (PU) were predominantly detected with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis as MPs as a fragment and fiber. This study indicates the negative correlation between grain size and the number of MPs in coastal sediments. Anthropogenic activities are evaluated as a possible primary source of plastic pollution in the study area. © 202
Data-Driven Surrogate-Assisted Optimization of Metamaterial-Based Filtenna Using Deep Learning
In this work, a computationally efficient method based on data-driven surrogate models is proposed for the design optimization procedure of a Frequency Selective Surface (FSS)-based filtering antenna (Filtenna). A Filtenna acts as a module that simultaneously pre-filters unwanted signals, and enhances the desired signals at the operating frequency. However, due to a typically large number of design variables of FSS unit elements, and their complex interrelations affecting the scattering response, FSS optimization is a challenging task. Herein, a deep-learning-based algorithm, Modified-Multi-Layer-Perceptron (M2LP), is developed to render an accurate behavioral model of the unit cell. Subsequently, the M2LP model is applied to optimize FSS elements being parts of the Filtenna under design. The exemplary device operates at 5 GHz to 7 GHz band. The numerical results demonstrate that the presented approach allows for an almost 90% reduction of the computational cost of the optimization process as compared to direct EM-driven design. At the same time, physical measurements of the fabricated Filtenna prototype corroborate the relevance of the proposed methodology. One of the important advantages of our technique is that the unit cell model can be re-used to design FSS and Filtenna operating various operating bands without incurring any extra computational expenses
Determination of the effect of silica nanoparticles on TRP currents in retinal pigment epithelial cells by entropy measurement
Ion channels in cell membranes are gated, water-filled pores that allow passive transport of ions across the
membrane along their electrochemical gradient. Recent studies have shown that nanoparticles can interact with
ion channels and change their currents kinetics properties of the channel. In this study, we used the transient
receptor potential (TRP) channel currents in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells recorded by whole-cell patch
clamp technique to observe the silica nanoparticle-ion channel interaction. For whole cell recordings, we
clamped membrane potential to − 40 mV and used a ramp of 1000 ms duration for stimulation. The ramp was
increased from − 140 mV to +60 mV. We used windowed scalogram entropy and compared the results with
windowed scale index method. Our results indicated that the temporal change of entropy using windowed
scalogram entropy method is sensitive to demonstrating the effect of silica nanoparticles on RPE cell TRP currents. Furthermore, windowed scale index can analyze the temporal fluctuations in the aperiodicity of cell
membrane current signals. Our findings suggest that entropy measurement methods may be useful in the
function analysis of cell ion channels
Conversion of the UTD Method to an Exact Method at all Frequencies for 2-D Conducting Half-Plane Problems
In addition to two recently discovered series, we discover a new asymptotic series for the exact solution of 2-D conducting half-plane problems. These series are compared with the ones used in the conventional UTD method solutions of the problem. By attaching some coefficients, which are not complex, to the terms of those series we convert the UTD method to an exact method at all frequencies, including low ones, regarding the given problem type. Schemes for calculations of these series with 7D accuracy (7 digits of accuracy) or 2D accuracy for high-speed calculations are described. IEE
