Face presentation attack detection. A comprehensive evaluation of the generalisation problem
Face recognition technology is now mature enough to reach commercial products, such as smart phones or tablets. However, it still needs to increase robustness against imposter attacks. In this regard, face Presentation Attack Detection (face-PAD) is a key component in providing trustable facial access to digital devices. Despite the success of several face-PAD works in publicly available datasets, most of them fail to reach the market, revealing the lack of evaluation frameworks that represent realistic settings. Here, an extensive analysis of the generalisation problem in face-PAD is provided, jointly with an evaluation strategy based on the aggregation of most publicly available datasets and a set of novel protocols to cover the most realistic settings, including a novel demographic bias analysis. Besides, a new fine-grained categorisation of presentation attacks and instruments is provided, enabling higher flexibility in assessing the generalisation of different algorithms under a common framework. As a result, GRAD-GPAD v2, a comprehensive and modular framework is presented to evaluate the performance of face-PAD approaches in realistic settings, enabling accountability and fair comparison of most face-PAD approaches in the literature.
Quantitative evaluation of CHT and GHT for column detection under different conditions of data quality
Quality control and project monitoring are topics of interest in the field of architectural-engineering-construction/facility management. The need to automatise the process and analyze data acquired with terrestrial laser scanners leads to optimum ways to perform the data acquisition guaranteeing the quality standards. This paper is focussed on the quantitative evaluation of a column detector based on the generalized hough transform (GHT) and the circle hough transform (CHT). Several quality conditions are considered, with the main goal to be able to determine the minimum requirements needed to be established during the data surveying. Elements such as completeness, point density, noise, and accuracy are simulated in laboratory conditions to perform the evaluation. Size and center position of round and rectangular cross-section columns are analyzed, reaching to a final conclusion that columns must be acquired with at least 30–40% of completeness. Noise effect is centered in the position of the column applying an error between 4 and 8 pixels. Point cloud resolution does not affect the results, whereas the projected image is stable and well distributed. The evaluation also showed a better performance of the Hough Transform on round than rectangular cross-section columns, primarily because the last ones are more sensitive to the amount of sides acquired and completeness values.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. Photoluminescence of te‐doped double perovskite Cs 2 ZrCl 6 nanocrystals versus bulk: insights from temperature‐dependent spectroscopy
Although bulk crystals of lead‐free vacancy‐ordered double perovskites demonstrated a highly efficient emission, their nanocrystals (NCs) counterparts exhibit inferior optical performance. To understand the reasons behind this phenomenon, Cs 2 ZrCl 6 :Te 4+ double perovskite NCs are synthesized, and their optical properties are compared with their bulk powders. Temperature‐dependent spectroscopy revealed that the NCs sustain a thermal sensitization of the intermediate trap state, which is located between the self‐trapped state of the host (Cs 2 ZrCl 6 ) and the triplet states of the dopant (Te 4+ ). This opens up a pathway for the non‐radiative recombination, and thus decreases the energy transfer efficiency from host to dopant. Importantly, this pathway is suppressed in larger (40 nm) Cs 2 ZrCl 6 :Te 4+ NCs, resulting in their photoluminescence quantum yield of 24%, as compared to 7% for the 22 nm NCs. Furthermore, the emission spectral range of these double perovskite NCs is shown to extended into near‐infrared by incorporating rare‐earth ions as additional dopants. The study has established a crucial relation between the optical properties and the size effect in lead‐free vacancy‐ordered double perovskites and thus lays a foundation for further improvement of their optical performance.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. Capitalist logics in food discourse : health, positivism, and productivity
Varela Suárez, Rodríguez Barcia y Rifón Sánchez 2020).Capitalism is focused on production and the free market. As a result, optimizing time has become one of the anchors for tyrannical productivity. To keep the production rate and receive both a psychological and an economic reward –linked to the so-called happycracy – taking care of nutrition has become a key factor in keeping this lifestyle. Social networks and our hyper-connected world have contributed to the spread of these time-efficient practices as well as supposedly healthy diets. This public exhibition has been coined "productivity porn" by Janira Planes (@janiraplanes). The logics underlying these practices are grounded on neoliberalism, in which human beings are objectified and image cultivation is essential – mainly linked to eternally young and non-overweight looks and maximum work performance. This work presents the results obtained by analyzing the DAME Corpus (Discourse of Nutrition in the media, University of Vigo). Particularly, our research goals are as follows: (i) observe whether Spanish written press conveys ideas on productivity, health, and positivity when talking about nutrition; (ii) detect the discursive strategies used to express these constructs through these media; (iii) reflect on how these ideas are adopted by their audiences. To do this, critical discourse analysis techniques have been applied to analyze the corpus. Moreover, the data obtained in a survey with 208 participants have been included to learn about public opinion. The results identify the discursive resources the Spanish written press uses to link productivity porn and happycracy with food discourse. Furthermore, a reflection on the dangers these ideas imply for both physical and mental health is presented. These discursive strategies have been identified as perpetuation strategies for the capitalist ideology
The Spanish Alternative Stock Market: a new opportunity for family firms
With the establishment of the Alternative Stock Market in Spain, family businesses small caps have the potential to be listed on a stock exchange designed for SMEs. Currently, with a deep financial crisis, the MAB achieves a special importance as an alternative strategy for funding and overcome the credit restrictions on the part of banks.Nevertheless, family firms cannot benefit from the MAB if, as noted in the study, is practically unknown. Furthermore, research results indicate that tax policies would encourage family firms to join the MAB
Assessment of ZnO nanoparticles as anticorrosive pigment in hybrid sol–gel films
The present work is focused on the study of sol–gel hybrid films doped with 0.5% (w/w) ZnO nanoparticles and applied on commercial tinplate. The sol–gel matrix was prepared from two precursors: tetra-n-propoxyzirconium (TPOZ) and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS). The incorporation of particles was carried out by two procedures: as received or after functionalization with GPTMS precursor. The interfacial chemistry of the ZnO was studied by the evaluation of the particle size (hydrodynamic diameter) and the zeta potential. The obtained results indicated that particle size was not affected by the chemical treatment. However the zeta potential changed from positive values (+19 mV) for as received ZnO, to negative ones (−44 mV) when they were treated, which corroborated the effectiveness of the functionalization process. The anticorrosive properties of the sol–gel films were evaluated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) technique. The results showed a clear effect of ZnO nanoparticles on the barrier properties of the film, which was more evident when those had been functionalized. An additional inhibiting action was proposed, based on the higher impedance values observed for doped samples.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. CN2012/19

Electromagnetic characterization of cola drinks
The electromagnetic characterization of liquids could be of great interest to manufacturing companies, as it could provide information about the quality of beverages. They could use this knowledge to optimize production processes. Using the probe reflection system, dielectric properties of different varieties of Coca-Cola and Pepsi products in cans have been examined. Measurements have been performed at several temperatures between 0 and 60 degrees Celsius and at periods after opening of 0, 6, 24 and 48 h. The applied frequency range goes from 0 to 20 GHz in steps of 200 Hz. Both experimental and theoretical approaches have been used to model the results. Although all varieties follow the same trend, the results clearly show that differences exist in the electromagnetic behavior of the two brands and of the different varieties
Corporate Social Responsibility and Ageism in the PublicPrivate Field. Ibex-35 and University of Vigo
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were accepted by the public and private
sectors of the UN countries, which included them into their social policies and CSR strategies. In 2020, the WHO launched the Decade of Healthy Aging, calling attention to ageism
and age discrimination against the group of older adults, a group that does not exist in the
SDGs, which focuses on children and/or adults.
This research observes whether this inclusion of the elderly in the CSR policies of the entities analyzed is real or whether data or reports are simply incorporated without adding
inclusion strategies. It compares, on the one hand, Ibex companies and, in contrast, a
public university (Vigo). The content analysis of the websites shows a scarce presence of
ageism in general, and discrimination of the elderly in particular, which are less relevant
than topics such as the environment, women, or children. However, the University of
Vigo, through the creation of the Chair of Ageism together with entities such as Atendo
and AFAGA, in a unique initiative in Europe, initiates a strategy that gives it visibility and
a new path within its Social Responsibility program, where this topic did not appear
