State‐of‐the‐Art, insights, and perspectives for MOFs‐nanocomposites and MOF‐derived (nano) materials
Composite structures created from metal‒organic framework (MOF) matrices are reviewed in this work. Depending on the nature of the second component apart from the MOF platform, several synergistic properties may arise; at the same time, the initial features of the single constituent materials are usually maintained, and individual shortcomings are mitigated. Currently, timely energy and environmental challenges necessitate the quest for more advanced materials and technologies. Significant developments in MOF‐nanocomposites have enabled their application across a wide range of modern and traditional fields. This review demonstrates in an exhaustive and critical way a broad range of MOF‐based nanocomposites, namely, MOF/perovskite nanoparticles (NPs), MOF/metal (non‐iron) oxide NPs, MOF/Fe 3 O 4 NPs, MOF/metal chalcogenide NPs, MOF/metal NPs, and MOF/carbon‐based materials, as well as nanocomposites of MOFs with other semiconductor NPs. Key points related to the synthesis, characterization, and applications of these materials are provided. Depending on their configuration, the composites under discussion can be applied in domains such as photoelectrochemical sensing, antibiotic/dye degradation, optoelectronics, photovoltaics, catalysis, solar cells, supercapacitors, batteries, water remediation, and drug loading. Sometimes, MOFs can undergo certain processes (e.g. pyrolysis) and act as precursors for composite materials with appealing characteristics. Therefore, a special section in the manuscript is devoted to MOF‐derived NP composites. Toward the end of the text, we conclude while also describing the challenges and possibilities for further investigations in the umbrella of material categories analyzed herein. Despite the progress achieved, key questions remain to be answered regarding the relationships among the morphology, properties, and polyvalent activity of these materials. The present work aims to shed light on most of their aspects and innovative prospects, facilitating a deeper comprehension of the underlying phenomena, functionality, and mechanistic insights governing their behavior.Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref. Dating the early Christian baptisteries from Idanha-a-Velha—the Suebi-Visigothic Egitania: stratigraphy, radiocarbon and OSL
The results of the excavations carried out by one of the authors in the early Christian baptisteries of Idanha-a-Velha, in Suebi-Visigothic Egitania, are presented. Chronostratigraphic data (stratigraphic sequence, typological analysis) are compared with radiocarbon and luminescence dates in order to establish a hypothesis concerning the construction date of both north and south baptisteries. The results have shown that the baptisteries are dated earlier than what had been proposed based on their constructive typology. The dates proposed in this article will generate a change in the paradigm established for this type of constructions in the Iberian Peninsula

definición de su repertorioThe message of salvation presented by the sculptural ensemble of the Portico de la Gloria in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, one of the masterpieces of the so-called «1200 art», continues behind its three
arches through the figuration created by the workshop of Master Mateo in the capitals of the pillars of the last section of the main nave of the basilica in a sort of figurative gloss of the portal’s programme. In them, the sculptors resorted to iconographic themes taken from the medieval bestiary and which, in some cases, resemble a stone translation of the miniatures that illustrated the English bestiaries of the late 12th century, which leads us to consider the possibility of the real presence of copies of these treatises in the cathedral library and that, therefore, they would have been available to the artists for the definition of their repertoire.
Gender imbalance in housework allocation: a question of time?
Using the 2002–2003 and 2009–2010 Spanish Time Use Surveys, this paper analyzes whether increases in nonworking time help dual-earner couples to reduce gender imbalance in housework allocation. Our empirical strategy exploits the fact that interviewed partners complete the survey on the same randomly assigned day, which may be a working day or a nonworking day for each spouse. This survey design allows us to compare the housework allocation decisions of dual-earner couples that are similar in key observable characteristics but differ in their work schedules during the interview day. We find that own nonworking days are associated with increases in men’s and women’s own contribution to housework and with decreases in the time their spouses spend on such activities. Yet the resulting imbalance in housework allocation differs depending on whether it is the wife or the husband with a day off. Thus, a husband’s nonworking day leads to an (almost) equal distribution of housework, whereas a wife’s nonworking day leads the partners to approach full specialization—with the wife performing most of the household tasks.Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref. Neuromeric distribution of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase activity in the adult lamprey brain
This study reports for the first time the distribution and morphological characterization of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d; a reliable marker of nitric oxide synthase activity) positive elements in the central nervous system of the adult river lamprey (
Lampetra fluviatilis
) on the framework of the neuromeric model and compares their cytoarchitectonic organization with that of gnathostomes. Both NADPH-d exhibiting cells and fibers were observed in all major divisions of the lamprey brain as well as in the spinal cord. In the secondary prosencephalon, NADPH-d positive cells were observed in the mitral cell layer of the olfactory bulb, evaginated pallium, amygdala, dorsal striatum, septum, lateral preoptic nucleus, caudal paraventricular area, posterior entopeduncular nucleus, nucleus of the stria medullaris, hypothalamic periventricular organ and mamillary region
sensu lato
. In the lamprey diencephalon, NADPH-d labeled cells were observed in several nuclei of the prethalamus, epithalamus, pretectum, and the basal plate. Especially remarkable was the staining observed in the right habenula and several pretectal nuclei. NADPH-d positive cells were also observed in the following mesencephalic areas: optic tectum (two populations), torus semicircularis, nucleus M5 of Schöber, and a ventral tegmental periventricular nucleus. Five different cell populations were observed in the isthmic region, whereas the large sensory dorsal cells, some cells located in the interpeduncular nucleus, the motor nuclei of most cranial nerves, the solitary tract nucleus, some cells of the reticular nuclei, and small cerebrospinal fluid-contacting (CSF-c) cells were the most evident stained cells of the rhombencephalon proper. Finally, several NADPH-d positive cells were observed in the rostral part of the spinal cord, including the large sensory dorsal cells, numerous CSF-c cells, and some dorsal and lateral interneurons. NADPH-d positive fibers were observed in the olfactory pathways (primary olfactory fibers and stria medullaris), the fasciculus retroflexus, and the dorsal column tract. Our results on the distribution of NADPH-d positive elements in the brain of the adult lamprey
L. fluviatilis
are significantly different from those previously reported in larval lampreys and demonstrated that these animals possess a complex nitrergic system readily comparable to those of other vertebrates, although important specific differences also exist.Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref. Stereochemical reassignment by total synthesis of an ocular pyridinium bisretinoid of retinal pigment epithelium lipofuscin: iiso -A2E Is i -A2E
The stereoselective synthesis of recently discovered lipofuscin fluorophore iiso-A2E, a C3,C4-bis-polyenylpyridinium salt derived from all-trans-retinal, which has been detected in human, pig, mouse, and bovine eyes, has been completed. The Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction and Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons condensation were the key synthetic steps for the construction of the tetraenyl and pentaenyl arms, respectively, starting from a properly functionalized pyridine-3,4-dialdehyde surrogate, followed by pyridine alkylation. Subtle changes in the 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra of the synthetic compound and natural compound suggested the structural revision of the latter, for which the C13′═C14′ E isomer at the longer C3-unsaturated pentaenyl chain of the pyridinium ring was proposed. The synthesis confirmed the alternative stereostructure of the natural pigment, which should be named i-A2E, thus correcting the double bond geometry of the natural fluorophore at C13′═C14′.Xunta de Galicia | Ref.
