How marital Attachment Styles Impact Dyadic Adjustments: The Mediating Role of Communication Patterns

No full text

Symptom network connectivity in PTSD comorbid with depression in bereaved Chinese parents who have lost their only child

No full text
Background The death of a child is a highly traumatic event for parents and often leads to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. PTSD and depression are frequently comorbid. However, the patterns of comorbidity at the symptom level among bereaved parents remain unclear. This study aims to identify the symptom network connectivity of PTSD comorbid with depression in bereaved Chinese parents who have lost their only child, known as Shidu parents in Chinese society. Methods Data were obtained from 477 bereaved individuals who had lost an only child. A regularized partial correlation network was used to construct comorbidity networks of PTSD and depression symptoms. A relative importance network was computed to determine directionality among symptoms in the network. Results PTSD symptoms of diminished interest, irritability/anger, reckless/self-destructive behavior, a negative emotional state, the avoidance of reminders, and flashbacks acted as important bridging nodes. The relative importance network analysis show two bidirectional pathways (hypervigilance reversible arrow exaggerated startle response reversible arrow difficulty concentrating reversible arrow sleeping difficulties reversible arrow poor sleep ; irritability/anger reversible arrow reckless/self-destructive behavior reversible arrow could not get going reversible arrow bothered by things), and exaggerated startle response, difficulty keeping mind, hypervigilance, and diminished interest have higher outstrength values with greater influence on a multitude of other symptoms within the comorbidity network. Conclusions The findings highlight the important role of specific symptoms and identified bidirectional pathways underscore the interconnected nature of PTSD and depression symptoms, suggesting that targeting these core or highly influential symptoms may disrupt the broader network and improve therapeutic outcomes

Dysfunctions of Reward Motivation Adaptation in Patients With Schizophrenia

No full text
Diminished reward motivation in the wanting or liking dimension constitutes one of the core dysfunctions in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). However, it remains unclear whether patients with SCZ would dynamically adapt their wanting or liking towards reward in response to a favourable effort-reward ratio and whether such adaptation correlates with their clinical symptoms or functional outcome. In this study, thirty patients with SCZ and 30 healthy controls (HC) were recruited to complete the reward motivation adaptation task (RMAT) based on mental arithmetic effort and manipulating effort-reward ratios. Clinical symptoms were assessed in the clinical group while pleasure experience and social functioning were assessed in all participants. We found that patients with SCZ exhibited less reward wanting and liking than HC in "effort = reward" and "effort < reward" conditions. Neither reward wanting nor liking in patients with SCZ adapted with effort-reward ratio as indicated by significantly smaller coefficients (beta wanting and beta liking) compared with HCs. Besides, SCZ patients' adaptation ability was positively correlated with social functioning in daily life. In conclusion, this study indicates that patients with SCZ not only exhibited reduced reward motivation in favourable conditions but also dysfunctions of reward motivation adaptation, and such deficits could explain poor functional outcome.</p

Work stress and depressive symptoms of employees in the logistics industry: Willingness to communicate and rumination as parallel mediators

No full text
To explore the relationship between work stress and depressive symptoms, as well as the dual mechanisms of willingness to communicate and rumination, we surveyed 520 logistics employees who completed the Work Stress Questionnaire, the Willingness to Communicate Scale, the Rumination Responses Scale, and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Questionnaire-Short Version. The results revealed that work stress was significantly and positively associated with depressive symptoms and rumination, whereas it was significantly and negatively associated with willingness to communicate. Further, willingness to communicate was significantly and negatively associated with depressive symptoms, and rumination was significantly and positively associated with depressive symptoms. Finally, willingness to communicate and rumination acted as parallel mediators between work stress and depressive symptoms. These results have theoretical implications and offer practical references for managers and employees in logistics organizations

The Relationship Between Parent-Child Attachment and Peer Attachment and Depression in College Students: A Moderated Polynomial Regression With Response Surface Analyses

No full text
Previous research has established a strong link between parental attachment and depression in youth. However, the nuances of paternal-maternal attachment congruence and its relationship with depressive symptoms, as well as the roles of gender differences and peer attachment in this context, remain unclear. This study aimed to explore these associations among emerging adults. Attachment and depressive symptoms were assessed in 1564 college students using the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), respectively. Polynomial regression and response surface analysis were utilized for data analysis. The results revealed that when paternal and maternal attachment were congruent, students with average-range levels of parental attachment (i.e., scores near the IPPA mean) exhibited the least depressive symptoms. Conversely, greater discrepancies between paternal and maternal attachment were associated with more pronounced depressive symptoms, while this effect was buffered by higher levels of peer attachment. In addition, incongruent paternal and maternal attachments were not significantly associated with depressive symptoms in sons, whereas insecure maternal attachment was more closely related to daughters' depressive symptoms. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of parental attachment (in)congruence in college students' depressive symptoms and the moderating roles of gender and peer attachment

Coordinated hippocampal-entorhinal representations support human context-dependent spatial navigation

No full text
To execute goal-directed behavior, retrieval of both context and object information is crucial. Despite the ubiquity of such contextual computations in daily navigation, the neural mechanisms underlying this process in humans and its connection to behavior remain largely elusive. Leveraging intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) recorded from epilepsy patients (N = 31) engaged in a context-dependent spatial navigation task, we uncovered distinct oscillatory patterns in the hippocampus (HC) and entorhinal cortex (EC) that represented context and object information, respectively. Notably, the covariation of these neural representations predicted behavioral performance. Furthermore, both representations were primarily driven by low-frequency oscillations (2-8 Hz). The synchronization of low-frequency oscillations between HC and EC was associated with enhanced object representations in the EC. These findings highlight the importance of low-frequency neural dynamics in mediating both local representations and interregional interactions within the hippocampal-entorhinal circuit during context-dependent spatial navigation.</p

High compliance and reduced online gaming time among Chinese adolescents after the 2021 gaming policy: Effects across all gamers, not just heavy users

No full text
Government policies have been proposed to mitigate excessive online gaming among adolescents, yet empirical evaluations of their effectiveness remain limited. Following China's 2021 online gaming policy, the strictest such regulation to date, we examined the compliance rate and alternative behaviors among heavy adolescent gamers. Several methodological concerns have been raised, including the omission of the 2019 policy, the narrow focus on heavy gamers, and ambiguities in key definitions. In this response, we address these concerns by clarifying the policy's independence, expanding the analysis to all adolescent participants, and incorporating pre- and post-policy gaming time as an additional measure of policy impact. Results from a broader sample (N = 2,715, mean age = 10.84) revealed a high compliance rate (93.6%) and a significant decrease in daily gaming time following the policy (60.12 vs. 43.52 min per day, p < 0.001). This reported gaming time may include offline or single-player gameplay. These findings support the conclusion that the 2021 policy significantly reduced adolescents' gaming time and achieved high compliance rates, though self-reported data may include offline gameplay and that historical policy context should be acknowledged in interpretation. Moreover, its longer-term effects on psychological well-being and physical health warrant further investigation
