Vaccine hesitancy preceding factors scale revision and differential testing across different periods
The shared neurobiological basis of developmental dyslexia and developmental stuttering: A meta-analysis of functional and structural MRI studies
Background: Developmental dyslexia (DD) and persistent developmental stuttering (PDS) are the most representative written and spoken language disorders, respectively, and both significantly hinder life success. Although widespread brain alterations are evident in both DD and PDS, it remains unclear to what extent these two language disorders share common neural substrates. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis of task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies of PDS and DD were conducted to explore the shared functional and anatomical alterations across these disorders. Results: The results of fMRI studies indicated shared hypoactivation in the left inferior temporal gyrus and inferior parietal gyrus across PDS and DD compared to healthy controls. When examined separately for children and adults, we found that child participants exhibited reduced activation in the left inferior temporal gyrus, inferior parietal gyrus, precentral gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, and inferior frontal gyrus, possibly reflecting the universal causes of written and spoken language disorders. In contrast, adult participants exhibited hyperactivation in the right precentral gyrus and left cingulate motor cortex, possibly reflecting common compensatory mechanisms. Anatomically, the analysis of VBM studies revealed decreased gray matter volume in the left inferior frontal gyrus across DD and PDS, which was exclusively observed in children. Finally, meta-analytic connectivity modeling and brain-behavior correlation analyses were conducted to explore functional connectivity patterns and related cognitive functions of the brain regions commonly involved in DD and PDS. Conclusions: This study identified concordances in brain abnormalities across DD and PDS, suggesting common neural substrates for written and spoken language disorders and providing new insights into the transdiagnostic neural signatures of language disorders
Psychosocial Factors and Psychological Adjustment Among Adolescents and Young Adults: A Comparative Analysis of Occasional Drug Craving and Non-Craving
Objective The rate of drug craving not only in Pakistan is escalating rapidly, but also from a wide range of cultures and geographically have been impacted by the drug problem. Recently, drug cravings among young Pakistani school and college students have significantly increased, particularly illegal substances like hashish, heroin, and ecstasy. Methods We recruited 338 students and gathered demographic and drug-craving data through a survey. To assess the study variables, we used the parental acceptance-rejection short version, peer pressure questionnaire, and adult personality assessment scale. Results The prevalence rate of occasional drug craving was 44.1% (tobacco, 39.9%; heroin, 1.8%; ice, 0.6%; and others), and 55.9% have never tried them. Initially, drug craving at the first onset at the age of 14 in friend gatherings (15.7%) in stressful situations (11.2%), high-income families, particularly in joint family systems with paternal rejection, peer enforcement, and maladjustment had a higher risk than affectionate parents and conventional peers. Stepwise binary logistic regression analysis disclosed that age, socioeconomic status, father affection, hostility, rejection, negligence, peer influences, and psychosocial adjustment, mother hostility were independently associated with occasional drug cravings. Conclusion Findings suggested the high prevalence of occasional drug cravings in Pakistani students in the capital territory. Furthermore, the demographic and other social and clinical aspects could be linked. This study carried out theoretical significance in understanding the predictors of occasional drug craving and psychological adjustment, highlighting the peer and parent's roles and the educational institutions
Retrieval-induced forgetting in undergraduate students is not affected by the correlated costs and benefits problem: evidence from cognitive inhibition
Retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF) occurs when retrieving items from memory impairs subsequent recall of related but not retrieved items. Theoretical debate exists regarding the mechanisms of RIF in terms of inhibition versus interference, which may stem from the fact that previous studies on individual differences in RIF have neglected the correlated costs and benefits (CCB) problem. To investigate whether RIF in undergraduate students with different levels of cognitive inhibition was affected by CCB, this study considered item competitive intensity. Participants retrieved low-intensity items under strong-item competitive intensity and the reverse under weak-item competitive intensity. The results showed that participants with low cognitive inhibition exhibited no RIF at both strong- and weak-item competitive intensities, while those with high cognitive inhibition only exhibited RIF at the strong-item competitive intensity. Competitive intensity is effective for testing and discriminating the confounding effects of RIF by CCB. It can be posited that, regardless of the cognitive inhibition levels of undergraduate students, inhibition is the mechanism of RIF and is not affected by CCB
Supplementation with <i>Lactobacillus helveticus</i> NS8 alleviated behavioral, neural, endocrine, and microbiota abnormalities in an endogenous rat model of depression
Introduction: Major depressive disorder is a condition involving microbiota-gut-brain axis dysfunction. Increasing research aims to improve depression through gut microbiota regulation, including interventions such as probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal microbiota transplants. However, most research focuses on exogenous depression induced by chronic stress or drugs, with less attention given to endogenous depression. Additionally, research on gut mycobiota in depression is significantly less than that on gut bacteria. Methods: In the present study, Wistar-Kyoto rats were used as an endogenous depression and treatment-resistant depression model, while Wistar rats served as controls. Differences between the two rat strains in behavior, gut bacteria, gut mycobiota, nervous system, endocrine system, immune system, and gut barrier were evaluated. Additionally, the effects of Lactobacillus helveticus NS8 supplementation were investigated. Results: Wistar-Kyoto rats demonstrated increased depressive-like behaviors in the forced swimming test, reduced sucrose preference in the sucrose preference test, and decreased locomotor activity in the open field test. They also exhibited abnormal gut bacteria and mycobiota, characterized by higher bacterial alpha-diversity but lower fungal alpha-diversity, along with increased butyrate, L-tyrosine, and L-phenylalanine biosynthesis from bacteria. Furthermore, these rats showed dysfunction in the microbiota-gut-brain axis, evidenced by a hypo-serotonergic system, hyper-noradrenergic system, defective hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, compromised gut barrier integrity, heightened serum inflammation, and diminished gut immunity. A 1-month L. helveticus NS8 intervention increased the fecal abundance of L. helveticus; reduced the abundance of Bilophila and Debaryomycetaceae; decreased immobility time but increased climbing time in the forced swimming test; reduced hippocampal corticotropin-releasing hormone levels; decreased hypothalamic norepinephrine levels; increased hippocampal glucocorticoid receptor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor dopamine, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid content; and improved the gut microbiota, serotonergic, and noradrenergic system. Conclusion: The depressive phenotype of Wistar-Kyoto rats is not only attributed to their genetic context but also closely related to their gut microbiota. Abnormal gut microbiota and a dysfunctional microbiota-gut-brain axis play important roles in endogenous depression, just as they do in exogenous depression. Supplementing with probiotics such as L. helveticus NS8 is likely a promising approach to improve endogenous depression and treatment-resistant depression
Elevated VCAM-1 levels in peripheral blood are associated with brain structural and functional alterations in major depressive disorder
Background: Vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) is a well-known biomarker of endothelial activation. This study aimed to determine whether changes in peripheral VCAM-1 levels occurred in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients and explored immune-brain interactions based on neuroimaging. Methods: This study included 165 subjects (80 healthy controls [HCs] and 85 MDD patients). Of them, 133 underwent magnetic resonance imaging. VCAM-1 was measured using a commercially available Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay kit following the manufacturer's instructions. The gray matter volume (GMV) and surface- based functional connectivity (FC) were calculated based on Schaefer parcellation 400 parcels. Results: Compared with the HCs, MDD patients exhibited significantly higher level of VCAM-1. The correlation analysis showed that VCAM-1 had a significant negative correlation with GMV of the right medial frontal cortex (MFC) and postcentral (PostCG). The mediation analyses showed that VCAM-1 mediated the association between group and GMV of PostCG and the FC of left ventral prefrontal cortex (vPFC) with right inferior parietal lobe (IPL). Conclusions: This study showed that a high level of VCAM-1 was associated to the decreased GMV in the right MFC and PostCG, and mediated the FC of the left vPFC with right IPL. These findings suggested that VCAM-1 might contribute to the etiology of MDD by influencing brain structure and function. Limitations: The cross-sectional design makes it difficult to determine the causal relationship and dynamic effect among VCAM-1, brain structure/function features, and depressive symptoms

Social observation modulates the influence of socioeconomic status on pro-environmental behavior: an event-related potential study
Understanding the psychological antecedents of socioeconomic status (SES) on pro-environmental behavior is crucial for effectively encouraging individuals from different socioeconomic backgrounds to address environmental issues. Previous research has separately examined the influence of SES and social observation on pro-environmental behavior. However, little is known about whether social observation moderates the influence of SES on pro-environmental behavior, and the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain uncharacterized. Using event-related potential (ERPs), we adopted the green purchase paradigm and manipulated subjective SES, to examine whether the influence of SES on pro-environmental behavior is moderated by social observation. The behavioral results revealed that individuals of high SES tended to purchase more eco-friendly products under the observable condition than those in the non-observable condition. The ERP results revealed that participants with high SES exhibited more negative N2 and N400 amplitude during environmental decisions in the non-observable condition than in the observable condition, indicating that high SES individuals experience less cognitive conflict during environmental decisions, which may reflect the attenuated cost-benefit trade-off due to reputational incentives in the presence of observers. Additionally, individuals with high SES exhibited greater reputational motivation when observed, as indicated by larger P3 amplitude. However, these differences were not observed among individuals with low SES. These findings suggest that SES is associated with distinct psychological and behavioral differences in pro-environmental behavior, moderated by social observation, evident across both the early and later stages of environmental decisions in the brain
Dynamics of symptom network in patients with first-episode schizophrenia: Insight from the CNFEST project
Background: Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous psychotic disorder. Recent theories have emphasized the importance of interactions among psychiatric symptoms in understanding the pathological mechanisms of schizophrenia. In the current study, we examined the symptom network in patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FES) at four time points during a six-month follow-up period. Methods: In total, 565 patients with FES were recruited from the Chinese First-Episode Schizophrenia Trial (CNFEST) project. Clinical symptoms were measured using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at baseline and follow-up (514 patients at one month, 429 at three months, and 392 at six months). We used a network analysis approach to estimate symptom networks with individual symptoms as nodes and partial correlation coefficients between symptoms as edges. A cross-lagged panel network (CLPN) model was used to identify predictive pathways for clinical symptoms. Results: We found stable and strongly connected edges in patients across the time points, such as links between delusions and suspiciousness/persecution (P1:P6), and emotional withdrawal and passive/apathetic social withdrawal (N2:N4). Emotional withdrawal (N2), poor rapport (N3), and passive/apathetic social withdrawal (N4) had high centrality estimates across all four time points. CLPN analysis showed that negative symptoms, including emotional withdrawal (N2), poor rapport (N3), and passive/apathetic social withdrawal (N4), and stereotyped thinking (N7) may have predictive effects for negative and general symptoms at follow-ups. Conclusions: The symptom network of schizophrenia may be dynamic as treatment progresses. Negative symptoms remain the central and stable symptoms of schizophrenia. Negative symptoms may be potential therapeutic targets that predict other symptoms
A Transdiagnostic Network Analysis of Childhood Trauma and Psychopathology
Background and Hypothesis Psychiatric comorbidities suggest that symptoms overlap across different diagnoses; the transdiagnostic network approach is valuable for studying psychopathology. Childhood trauma is a common transdiagnostic risk factor for psychiatric disorders, but the complex relationship between childhood trauma and psychopathology has seldom been investigated using a large cross-sectional transdiagnostic sample.Study Design This study recruited 869 patients with different diagnoses, including 418 schizophrenia, 215 bipolar disorder, and 236 major depressive disorder. Participants completed psychiatric interviews and self-report questionnaires. We constructed dimension- and item-level Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator-based (LASSO) networks to explore the relationship between childhood trauma, psychopathology, and duration of illness. Moreover, we constructed directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) to tentatively clarify the potential directions of associations among these variables. Network Comparison Tests (NCTs) were conducted for different diagnostic groups and gender-stratified groups.Study Results The transdiagnostic LASSO networks showed that different types of childhood trauma exerted distinct impacts on various psychopathological dimensions. Emotional abuse was linked to depressive symptoms, physical abuse to excited symptoms, sexual abuse to positive and disorganized symptoms, emotional neglect to depressive symptoms and motivation and pleasure (MAP) deficits factor of negative symptoms, and physical neglect to MAP factor. The DAG findings generally concurred with the LASSO network. The NCT showed comparable networks.Conclusions Our findings suggest that childhood trauma is significantly associated with the development of psychopathology across different diagnostic groups. The affective pathway model suggests that early identification and tailored interventions would be needed for people with a history of childhood trauma
