Measurement invariance of the driving inattention scale (ARDES) across 7 countries

No full text
The Attention-Related Driving Errors Scale (ARDES) is a self-report measure of individual differences in driving inattention. ARDES was originally developed in Spanish (Argentina), and later adapted to other countries and languages. Evidence supporting the reliability and validity of ARDES scores has been obtained in various different countries. However, no study has been conducted to specifically examine the measurement invariance of ARDES measures across countries, thus limiting their comparability. Can different language versions of ARDES provide comparable measures across countries with different traffic regulations and cultural norms? To what extent might cultural differences prevent researchers from making valid inferences based on ARDES measures? Using Alignment Analysis, the present study assessed the approximate invariance of ARDES measures in seven countries: Argentina (n = 603), Australia (n = 378), Brazil (n = 220), China (n = 308). Spain (n = 310), UK (n = 298), and USA (n = 278). The three-factor structure of ARDES scores (differentiating driving errors occurring at Navigation, Manoeuvring and Control levels) was used as the target theoretical model. A fixed alignment analysis was conducted to examine approximate measurement invariance. 12.3 % of the intercepts and 0.8 % of the item-factor loadings were identified as non-invariant, averaging 8.6 % of non-invariance. Despite substantial differences among the countries, sample recruitment or representativeness, study results support resorting to ARDES measures to make comparisons across the country samples. Thus, the range of cultures, laws and collision risk across these 7 countries provides a demanding assessment for a cultural-free inattention while-driving. The alignment analysis results suggest that ARDES measures reach near equivalence among the countries in the study. We hope this study will serve as a basis for future cross-cultural research on driving inattention using ARDES.</p

Relationship between cognitive function and brain activation in major depressive disorder patients with and without insomnia: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study

No full text
Background: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) frequently present with sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether cognitive impairment is more severe in MDD patients with insomnia, and the underlying neural mechanisms. Methods: A total of 41 MDD patients with insomnia and 43 MDD patients without insomnia were recruited. We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to assess changes in oxyhemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) concentrations in the brain of patients while performing a verbal fluency task (VFT). Sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), cognitive function by the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), and severity of depression by the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD). Results: Compared to MDD patients without insomnia, those with insomnia had lower scores on the RBANS total and immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional, and delayed memory subscales, as well as lower oxy-Hb concentrations in the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and bilateral medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC).Further correlation analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between the RBANS total score in all brain regions except left mPFC in MDD patients with insomnia(all p < 0.05). Further multiple linear regression showed that Oxy-Hb concentrations of left DLPFC were independently associated with RBANS total score. Conclusion: Our study suggests that MDD patients with insomnia have more cognitive impairment, which is associated with impaired frontal brain activity. Our findings may provide new insights to understand the underlying neural mechanisms of both disorders MDD patients and provide potential clinical value for developing treatment strategies for insomnia in MDD patients

Impact of COVID-19 on negative body image: Evidence based on social media data

No full text
Body experiences and conditions bear close relations to social development and human well-being. However, no consensus has been reached regarding the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 on negative body image. Investigating a reliable relationship between COVID-19 and negative body image, we developed a dictionary of negative body image to obtain panel data on body image for 31 Chinese provinces/municipalities/autonomous regions. We compared negative body image before and after the pandemic and explored the impact of pandemic severity. The prevalence of negative body image decreased following the outbreak and remained at a relatively low level for two years. After controlling regional and temporal effects, we verified epidemic severity as an important predictor of the decline in negative body image. The findings suggest that the public is likely to accept their physical appearances during lockdown due to changes in lifestyle and the fear of mortality. This research has important implications for gaining insights into the dynamic transformation of public negative body image under the influence of catastrophic public health events

Background Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is highly correlated with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the prevalence and risk factors for SCH in older patients with MDD have rarely been reported in China. Methods This cross-sectional study included 266 older MDD patients with SCH was performed. Clinical and anthropometric, biochemical, and thyroid function data were collected. Depression, anxiety, and psychotic symptoms were assessed using the Hamilton Depression Scale, the Hamilton Anxiety Scale, and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale positive subscale, respectively. Results Among older patients with MDD, the prevalence of SCH was 64.7% (172/266). Compared to patients without SCH, older MDD patients with SCH had a longer disease course and higher TSH, A-TG, A-TPO, HDL-C, LDL-C, TC, FPG, and systolic pressure levels (all P <= 0.002). Furthermore, disease progression (OR 1.082, 95% CI 1.020-1.147, P = 0.009), A-TG (OR 1.005, 95% CI 1.001-1.009, P = 0.017), TC (OR 2.024, 95% CI 1.213-3.377, P = 0.007), FPG (OR 2.916, 95% CI 1.637-5.194, P < 0.001), systolic pressure (OR 1.053, 95% CI 1.008-1.100, P = 0.022) were independently associated with SCH, in older patients with MDD. Conclusions Our findings suggest a high prevalence of SCH in older patients with MDD. Several demographic and clinical variables were independently associated with SCH in older patients with MDD

Associations between amyloid-β load and cognition in cerebrovascular disease beyond cerebral amyloid angiopathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis of positron emission tomography studies

No full text
Background: There is growing interest in the comorbidity of vascular and neurodegenerative pathologies in patients with cerebrovascular disease (CVD) beyond cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). However, the relationship between amyloid-beta and vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) remains debated. Objective: To investigate the association between VCI and amyloid-beta deposition in non-CAA CVD patients. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO and CENTRAL databases were systematically searched. Observational studies, including case-control and cohort studies, associating cognitive scores with amyloid load measured by positron emission tomography were selected. Meta-analyses were performed to assess the strength of amyloid-cognition associations across CVD subtypes and cognitive domains. A random-effects model using the inverse variance method was used, with heterogeneity evaluated by Q-statistics and I-2 statistics. Meta-regression analyses were conducted to examine the influence of moderators, and publication bias was assessed using funnel plots and Egger's test. All statistical analyses were performed using StataMP 18. Results: Twenty-seven eligible studies encompassing 2894 participants were included. Among non-CAA CVD patients, global cognitive performance was significantly lower in those with higher amyloid-beta deposition (standardized mean difference = -0.43, P 0.05). Conclusions: Amyloid-beta load is associated with cognitive decline in non-CAA CVD patients. This is more pronounced in patients with subcortical vascular disease than in post-stroke patients. Executive function is the most susceptible domain in VCI when the level of amyloid-beta increases. [GRAPHICS
