    Greater prosociality toward other human drivers than autonomous vehicles: Human drivers' discriminatory behavior in mixed traffic

    The development of autonomous vehicles (AVs) has rapidly evolved in recent years, aiming to gradually replace humans in driving tasks. However, road traffic is a complex environment involving numerous social interactions. As new road users, AVs may encounter different interactive situations from those of human drivers. This study therefore investigates whether human drivers show distinct degrees of prosociality toward AVs or other human drivers and whether AV behavioral patterns exert a relevant influence. Sixty-two drivers participated in the driving simulation experiment and interacted with other human drivers and different kinds of AVs (conservative, human-like, aggressive). The results show that human drivers are more willing to yield to other human drivers than to all kinds of AVs. Their braking reaction time is longer when yielding to AVs and their distance to AVs is shorter when choosing not to yield. AVs of different behavioral patterns do not significantly differ in yielding rate, but the braking reaction time of human-like AVs is longer than conservative AVs and shorter than aggressive AVs. These findings suggest that human drivers show more prosocial behaviors toward other human drivers than toward AVs. And human drivers&#39; yielding behavior changes as the behavioral patterns of AVs changes. Accordingly, this study improves the understanding of how human drivers interact with nonliving road users such as AVs and how the former accept AVs with different driving styles on the road.</p

    Abnormal resting-state functional connectivity in subregions of amygdala in adults and adolescents with major depressive disorder

    BackgroundThe different symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescents compared to adults suggested there may be differences in the pathophysiology between adolescents and adults with MDD. However, despite the amygdala being considered critical in the pathophysiology, there was limited knowledge about the commonalities and differences in the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of amygdala subregions in MDD patients of different age groups.MethodsIn the current study, 65 adolescents (46 with MDD and 19 controls) and 91 adults (35 with MDD and 56 controls) were included. A seed-based functional connectivity analysis was performed for each of the amygdala subregions. A 2 x 2 ANOVA was used to analyze the main effect of age, diagnosis, and their interaction on the rsFC of each subregion.ResultsA significant main effect of age was revealed in the rsFC of bilateral centromedial (CM) subregions and right laterobasal (LB) subregion with several brain regions in the limbic system and frontoparietal network. The significant main effect of diagnosis showed MDD patients of different ages showed higher connectivity than controls between the right LB and left middle frontal gyrus (MFG).ConclusionsThe rsFC of specific amygdala subregions with brain regions in the limbic system and frontoparietal network is affected by age, indicating a distinct amygdala connectivity profile in adolescents. The decreased rsFC between the right LB and the left MFG in adolescents and adults with MDD could serve as a diagnostic biomarker and a target of nonpharmacological treatment for MDD.</p

    Atypical and variable attention patterns reveal reduced contextual priors in children with autism spectrum disorder

    Accumulating evidence suggests that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show impairments in using contextual priors to predict others' actions and make intention inference. Yet less is known about whether and how children with ASD acquire contextual priors during action observation and how contextual priors relate to their action prediction and intention inference. To form proper contextual priors, individuals need to observe the social scenes in a reliable manner and focus on socially relevant information. By employing a data-driven scan path method and areas of interest (AOI)-based analysis, the current study investigated how contextual priors would relate to action prediction and intention understanding in 4-to-9-year-old children with ASD (N = 56) and typically developing (TD) children (N = 50) during free viewing of dynamic social scenes with different intentions. Results showed that children with ASD exhibited higher intra-subject variability when scanning social scenes and reduced attention to socially relevant areas. Moreover, children with high-level action prediction and intention understanding showed lower intra-subject variability and increased attention to socially relevant areas. These findings suggest that altered fixation patterns might restrain children with ASD from acquiring proper contextual priors, which has cascading downstream effects on their action prediction and intention understanding. Skilled social interactions require individuals to infer others' intentions and predict others' actions based on prior experiences, which is impaired in children with ASD. The present study investigated whether and how children with ASD acquire prior knowledge and how their prior knowledge would influence action prediction and intention understanding during viewing dynamic social scenes. We found that children with ASD viewed social scenes in an unpredictable way and showed decreased attention to socially relevant areas as compared with typically developing children. Moreover, children with high-level action prediction and intention understanding observed the social scenes in a more predictable way and exhibited increased attention to socially relevant areas. These findings suggest that children with ASD may acquire unreliable prior knowledge, which has adverse effects on their action prediction and intention understanding

    Influence of protective clothing and masks on facial trustworthiness in an investment game: insights from a Chinese population study

    Facial features are important sources of information about perceived trustworthiness. Masks and protective clothing diminish the visibility of facial cues by either partially concealing the mouth and nose or covering the entire face. During the pandemic, the use of personal protective equipment affected and redefined who trusts whom in society. This study used the classical investment game of interpersonal trust with Chinese participants to explore the impact of occlusion on interpersonal trust. Faces with moderate initial trustworthiness were occluded by a mask or protective clothing in Experiment 1 and were digitally occluded by a square in Experiment 2, and faces with three levels of initial trustworthiness were occluded by a mask in Experiment 3. Results showed that both undergraduates (Experiment 1a) and non-student adults (Experiment 1b) perceived the faces with protective clothing as more trustworthy than faces wearing standard masks and faces not wearing masks. Faces with the top halves showing were perceived as trustworthy as full faces, while faces with the bottom halves showing were perceived as less trustworthy. The effect of masks is weak and complex. Masks reduced participants&#39; trust in faces with high initial trustworthiness, had no effect on faces with low and moderate initial trustworthiness, and only slightly increased the trust of undergraduates in faces with moderate initial trustworthiness. Our findings indicate that the lack of information caused by occlusion and the social significance associated with occlusion collectively affect people&#39;s trust behavior in Chinese society. We believe the findings of this study will be useful in elucidating the effects of personal protective equipment usage on perceptions of trustworthiness.</p

    Compliance and alternative behaviors of heavy gamers in adolescents to Chinese online gaming restriction policy

    Background and aims: In 2021, China implemented a policy to prevent adolescents from excessive online gaming, with the goal of encouraging healthier leisure activities. Methods: Three months after this policy was implemented, we conducted a study involving 430 Chinese adolescents who regularly played online games for over two hours daily before the policy. We collected their responses to the restriction, including their compliance with the policy, engagement in undesirable alternative behaviors (e.g., watching short videos), and engagement in desirable alternative behaviors (e.g., playing sports). We also collected data on individual factors, parental technology interference, and feelings of restriction to use as predictors for behaviors, including those related to violating the restriction or watching short videos. Results: A small percentage of heavy gamers violated the restriction by renting others&#39; game accounts (3%) or using a family member&#39;s identity (14%), while 59% of the sample shifted to watching short videos. Heavy gamers who lived in rural areas, spent more time on online games prior to the policy, did not feel restricted from playing online games, and experienced parental technology interference were more likely to violate the restriction. Females or those lacking stable hobbies were more inclined to watch short videos. Conclusions: Although the policy restricted heavy gaming, it has also led to increased short video use. Policymakers could explore alternative approaches, such as developing infrastructure that supports outdoor leisure activities in rural areas, encouraging parents to model responsible technology use behaviors, and guiding adolescents to cultivate positive hobbies in their leisure time.</p

    Elevated thyroid stimulating hormone and metabolic syndrome risk in patients with first-episode and drug-na?ve major depressive disorder: a large-scale cross-sectional study

    Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is common in major depressive disorder (MDD), but its relationship with thyroid hormones remains unclear. We aimed to examine the association of thyroid hormones and MetS in first-episode drug-na &amp; iuml;ve (FEDN) MDD patients. Methods We recruited 1718 unmedicated MDD patients in this cross-sectional study. MetS was defined based on the 2004 Chinese Diabetes Society Criteria. Serum thyroid hormones including free thyroxine (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb), and anti-thyroglobulin (TGAb) were examined. We used the logistic regression model to determine risk factors for MetS and examined the performance of the regression model by using the Area Under the Curve (AUC). In addition, we performed the trend test to test whether the results were robust. Results The prevalence of MetS in unmedicated MDD patients was 34.4%. MDD patients with MetS had higher levels of serum TSH, TGAb, and TPOAb (all P &lt; 0.001). Concurrently, serum TSH levels were independent risk factors for MetS in MDD patients (OR:1.49, 95%CI: 1.40-1.58), which could also distinguish MDD patients with and without MetS (AUC was 0.77). Additionally, in the trend test, the results also indicated a similar trend when TSH was used as a categorical variable (P for trend &lt; 0.001). Conclusions This study suggests that TSH levels were independent risk factors for MetS in FEDN MDD patients (OR:1.49). The examination of thyroid function may contribute to the early detection of MetS.</p

    Late Positivity Correlates with Subjective Reports: Evidence from the Low-frequency and High-frequency Reporting Tasks

    Identifying the neural correlates of consciousness (NCCs) is an important way to understand the fundamental nature of consciousness. By recording event-related potentials (ERPs) using EEG, researchers have found three potential electrophysiological NCCs: early positive correlate of consciousness (enhanced P1), visual awareness negativity (VAN), and late positivity (LP). However, LP may reflect post-perceptual processing associated with subjective reports rather than consciousness per se . The present experiment investigated the relationship between LP and subjective reports. We adopted two subjective reporting tasks that differed in the requirement for subjective reports. In the low-frequency reporting task, participants needed to report whether they saw the target picture in 25% of trials, whereas in the high-frequency reporting task, participants needed to report whether they saw the target picture in each trial. Behavioral results showed that the hit rates were lower and false alarm rates were higher on reporting trials in low-frequency reporting tasks than on reporting trials in high-frequency reporting tasks. Unexpectedly, VAN was larger on reporting trials in the low-frequency reporting task than on reporting trials in the high-frequency reporting task. Importantly, our ERP results showed that LP was larger on reporting trials in the high-frequency reporting task than on reporting trials in the low-frequency reporting task. Thus, our findings indicated that when the frequency of reports was increased, the task relevance of the stimuli increased, which led to larger LP amplitudes.     Association of clinical variables and thyroid-stimulating hormone with psychotic symptoms in patients with first-episode and drug-na?ve major depressive disorder with elevated fasting blood glucose: preliminary exploratory study with a large sample

    Background Psychotic symptoms and elevated fasting blood glucose (FBG) are frequently observed in people with major depressive disorder (MDD), but there is a lack of research into this relationship within this cohort.Aims This study aimed to preliminarily explore the prevalence of psychotic symptoms and their predictors among patients with MDD and elevated FBG.Method This study enrolled 1718 patients with first-episode and drug-na &amp; iuml;ve (FEDN) MDD. Sociodemographic data and physical and biochemical indicators were collected. Clinical symptoms were assessed with tools such as the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale positive subscale.Results The odds ratio for psychotic symptoms in those with MDD and elevated FBG (18.7%) was 2.33 times higher than those with MDD without elevated FBG. Presence of psychotic symptoms was significantly correlated with HRSD score, suicide attempts, and total cholesterol and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels. The combination of HRSD score, suicide attempts and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels among patients with MDD and elevated FBG effectively distinguished between individuals with and without psychotic symptoms, achieving an area under the curve of 0.87.Conclusions Psychotic symptoms are frequently observed among FEDN MDD patients with elevated FBG, and depressive symptoms, suicide attempts and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels are related to psychotic symptoms in this cohort.</p

    The regulation of social factors on anxiety and microglial activity in nucleus accumbens of adolescent male mice: Influence of social interaction strategy

    Background: Adolescence is a period characterized by a high vulnerability to emotional disorders, which are modulated by biological, psychological, and social factors. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Methods: Combining physical or emotional social defeat stress (PS and ES) and pair or isolation rearing conditions, we investigated the effects of stress type and social support on emotional behavior and central immune molecules in adolescent mice, including anxiety, social fear, and social interaction strategies, as well as changes in microglia-specific molecules (ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1 (Iba1) and a cluster of differentiation molecule 11b (CD11b)) in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), hippocampus (HIP), amygdala (AMY), and nucleus accumbens (NAc). Results: Mice exposed to both physical stress and isolated rearing condition exhibited the highest levels of anxiety, social fear, and microglial CD11b expression in the NAc. In terms of social support, pair-housing with siblings ameliorated social fear and NAc molecular changes in ES mice, but not in PS mice. The reason for the differential benefit from social support was attributed to the fact that ES mice exhibited more active and less passive social strategies in social environment compared to PS mice. Further, the levels of stress-induced social fear were positively associated with the expression of microglial CD11b in the NAc. Conclusion: These findings offer extensive evidence regarding the intricate effects of multiple social factors on social anxiety and immune alteration in the NAc of adolescent mice. Additionally, they suggest potential behavioral and immune intervention strategies for anxiety-related disorders in adolescents.</p
