Beyond valence: A predictive coding framework for major-minor mode perception and its therapeutic implications: Comment on "The major-minor mode dichotomy in music perception" by Carraturo et al.
The dichotomy between major and minor modes in Western tonal music has long been oversimplified as a straightforward mapping of emotional valence (positive versus negative). However, a recent review by Carraturo et al. [1] presents a tripartite paradox in understanding this relationship: (1) psychophysical discrepancies, where minor mode's melodic tension can evoke pleasure despite its sad connotations [2], (2) neural contradictions, with minor mode stimulating limbic-reward circuit activity [3], and (3) cultural heterogeneity, as non-Western modal systems sometimes defy major-minor emotional mappings [4]. These inconsistencies underscore the need for a unifying framework that reconciles the psychophysical, neural, and cultural complexities of mode perception. We propose that reward prediction error (RPE)-a computational mechanism linking auditory expectation-violation dynamics [5] and dopamine-driven motivation [6]-offers such a bridge. This predictive coding perspective reframes major-minor perception beyond mere valence, illuminate its therapeutic potential, and addresses individual and cultural variability.</p

Interactive influence of the perceived visual richness, greenness and scenography on landscape preference of urban woodland
Interpreting landscape preferences based on a single visual attribute easily leads to context-specific bias, limiting practical applications. This study examines the interactive effects of compositional attributes of visual greenness (Greenness) and richness of compositional elements (Richness), along with the organizational attribute of Scenography type, on preferences for urban woodland landscapes. A total of 121 participants rated their preferences for photographs depicting 54 urban woodland scenes, each varying in Richness and Greenness and categorized into six Scenography types. Linear Mixed Models revealed a significant interaction between Richness and Greenness in determining landscape preferences. Additionally, the interaction between Richness and Greenness on landscape preference was moderated by the organizational attribute, resulting in distinct patterns across various Scenography types. Some exhibited reinforcing effects between attributes, while others had a single prominent attribute that undermined the effects of the other. This article presents these interactions based on the developed model and discusses the above patterns regarding compositional and organizational visual attributes and preference from a theoretical perspective, providing practical suggestions for design and management. The results clearly signify the necessity of understanding landscape preference with an interactive perspective, and highlighted some key knowledge gaps that need to be addressed to support deeper and broader explorations.</p
Essential oils as therapeutic and protective instruments in depression based on animal models: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Acting as complementary and alternative medicine tools, essential oils have been widely researched for depression due to their diverse potential therapeutic benefits and bioactive constituents in mood regulation. However, their efficacy and underlying mechanisms remain debated. This study aimed to analyze the efficacy of essential oils in alleviating depressive-like behaviors in animal models and to summarize the underlying mechanisms. We independently searched eight databases from their inception to May 2024 and eighteen studies satisfied the inclusion criteria. Considerable differences between the essential oils and control groups were found in sucrose preference test (SPT), forced swimming test (FST), and tail suspension test (TST), indicating promising potential for treating depressive-like behaviors. These findings suggest that essential oils can markedly alleviate depressive-like symptoms. Subgroup analyses revealed that animal strains, administration routes, and vehicle types were the primary sources of heterogeneity in the FST, with greater consistency observed in C57BL mice, intraperitoneal administration, and polar vehicles, respectively. However, a degree of publication bias was detected in SPT and TST. Finally, we also summarized the potential mechanisms underlying the antidepressant-like effects of essential oils reported in these studies. This study represents the first meta-analysis evaluating the antidepressant-like effects of essential oils in animal models. It provides valuable insights into the potential therapeutic and protective roles of essential oils for patients with depression in the future.</p
Relational Victimization, Coping Styles and Depressive Symptoms: A Test of Bidirectional Associations in Adolescence
Although evidence from previous studies suggests that adolescents with negative coping styles who experienced victimization are more likely to exhibit depressive symptoms, these associations have not yet been disentangled to separate between-person differences from within-person effects. To investigate the within-person bidirectional relationships among relational victimization, coping styles and depressive symptoms, this study conducted a four-wave random intercept cross-lagged panel model analysis. The final sample consisted of 1506 adolescents, 72.6% of whom were male, with a mean age of 10.90 years (SD = 1.12) at the first time point. The findings revealed a prospective within-person association between relational victimization and depressive symptoms, and a reciprocal within-person relationship between depressive symptoms and avoidance coping. The approach coping style negatively predicted depressive symptoms over time, whereas depressive symptoms did not affect the approach coping style. These findings show how depressive symptoms, relational victimization, and coping styles are related at the individual level, extending previous research through the demonstration of stable within-person associations over time
Altered Sensorimotor Striatal Network Connectivity in Women With Anorexia Nervosa
ObjectiveAnorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with disturbances in reward processing, cognitive control, and body image perception, implicating striatal dysfunction. Evidence suggests that underweight may modulate brain function in AN. We aimed to investigate whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the striatum in patients with AN while controlling for the acute effects of underweight.MethodUsing theoretically selected striatal sub-regions, whole-brain rsFC patterns of the striatum were compared among patients with AN (n = 39, BMI = 16.19 +/- 1.48 kg/m2), normal weight healthy controls (NHC) (n = 31, BMI = 20.98 +/- 1.72 kg/m2), and underweight healthy controls (UHC) (n = 22, BMI = 16.68 +/- 0.69 kg/m2). Correlation analysis between rsFC and clinical measures was conducted for the patients with AN.ResultsCompared with the NHC group, AN patients showed increased striatal rsFC with the fronto-parietal network (FPN) and reduced striatal rsFC with sensorimotor and visual regions. Compared with the UHC group, AN patients exhibited reduced striatal rsFC solely with sensorimotor and visual regions. No significant correlations were found between striatal rsFC and clinical variables in the patients with AN.ConclusionOur findings suggest that decreased striatal rsFC with sensorimotor and visual areas may represent illness-specific neural correlates in patients with AN.</p
Comprehensive Analysis of a Dendritic Cell Marker Genes Signature to Predict Prognosis and Immunotherapy Response in Lung Adenocarcinoma
With the development of immune checkpoints inhibitors (ICIs), immunotherapy has recently taken center stage in cancer treatment. Dendritic cells exert complicated and important functions in antitumor immunity. This study aims to construct a novel dendritic cell marker gene signature (DCMGS) to predict the prognosis and immunotherapy response of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). DC marker genes in LUAD were identified by analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing data. 6 genes (G0S2, KLF4, ALDH2, IER3, TXN, CD69) were screened as the most prognosis-related genes for constructing DCMGS on a training cohort from TCGA data set. Patients were divided into high-risk and low-risk groups by DCMGS risk score based on overall survival time. Then, the predictive ability of the risk model was validated in 6 independent cohorts. DCMGS was verified to be an independent prognostic factor in multivariate analysis. Furthermore, we performed pathway enrichment analysis to explore possible biological mechanisms of the powerful predictive ability of DCMGS, and immune cell infiltration landscape and inflammatory activities were exhibited to reflect the immune profile. Notably, we bridged DCMGS with expression of immune checkpoints and TCR/BCR repertoire diversity that can inflect immunotherapy response. Finally, the predictive ability of DCMGS in immunotherapy response was also validated by 2 cohorts that had received immunotherapy. As a result, the patients with lower DCMGS risk scores showed a better prognosis and immunotherapy response. In conclusion, DCMGS was suggested to be a promising prognostic indicator for LUAD and a desirable predictor for immunotherapy response.</p
