IN ENGLISH: The focus of the thesis is on the policy changes at the public universities in Croatia in 2001-2013 time period. The topic is approached from historical institutionalism theoretical framework and managed through specific policy change model. The main goal is to explain the policy change in six sub-policies (structure and curriculum, mobility, quality assurance, social dimension, enrollment policy and tuition fees policy) at seven public universities in Croatia after the introduction of the Bologna Process. The model of policy change takes into account institutional framework of the higher education system and policy-actors’ characteristics (strategic interests, beliefs and capacities) in order to explain the process of policy change. Also, the goal is to improve the policy change model in order to make it applicable on other levels of higher education policy and in other public policies. Methodology includes process tracing, directed content analysis (strategic documents of universities, universities’ minutes, Rectors’ Conference minutes, newspaper interviews) and semi-structured interviews. Results indicate that particularly worrisome was the institutional organization. Namely, even when there were suitable actors’ characteristics, it was not possible to conduct changes since the institutional non-integration was disabling bringing and conducting of decisions that would enable the policy change. Also, mere existence of an integrated structure did not prove to be a sufficient condition for change and it was necessary to fulfill the condition of compatibility of actors’ characteristics with surrounding contexts (European and national). On the other hand, the example of the UNIRI revealed that the strive to establish integration, insisting on functional integration on the level of the University, the decreased influence of constituent units and compatibility of actors’ characteristics with surrounding contexts ensured foundation for changes

Social capital and educational achievements: Coleman vs. Bourdieu

    No full text
The influence of social capital on an individual’s educational achievements is the subject of numerous scientific papers. Research on social capital is most frequently based on Coleman’s (1988) or Bourdieu’s (1986) theories of capital, which are related to different paradigms of social theory: whereas Coleman’s approach has its roots in structural functionalism, Bourdieu’s approach contains elements of conflict theory. A number of authors, starting with Bourdieu, attempt to explain and prove that, when connected with the education of individuals, the activity of social capital facilitates social reproduction. Other authors support the notion that social capital is, in fact, a powerful weapon that encourages social mobility. A third group of researchers emphasise that neither of these approaches in isolation can entirety explain the influences of social capital on an individual’s education (Ho, 2003). The present paper offers a review of research focusing on the influences of social capital on educational achievements, while outlining the fundamental differences between the two theoretical approaches that are most frequently used for research of this topic. The aim of the paper is to explain the influence of social capital on an individual’s educational achievements under Bourdieu’s and Coleman’s theoretical concepts, and to establish whether combining the approaches is possible. The conclusion and arguments show that it is legitimate to use all three theoretical approaches

Uvod u komparaciju urbanih sustava glavnih gradova Zagreba i Podgorice

(IN ENGLISH: In the 2015-2016 bilateral research project Transformation of urban and rural systems in Zagreb and Podgorica during the transition period, social changes are studied in the post-socialist period of the two countries, mostly vis-ible in their two capital cities. Not only do these cities and their transformations have a great influence on the total territory of Croatia and Montenegro, but they also strongly affect their own suburban and rural space into which a large number of inhabitants is drawn because of work opportunities and other urban functions. Similar processes and developments, primarily caused by the new political and economic systems, can be observed in both capital cities during the post-socialist transition. The changes are obvious in people’s everyday life and their use of space (from the neighbourhood unit to the whole city). The socio-spatial context of post-socialist cities shows that while some urbanization trends typical of socialism have been abandoned, some have continued with very few modifications, such as suburbanization, the expansion of suburban neighbour-hoods around major cities. The main aim of the research carried out in 2015 in Zagreb and Podgorica was to study and analyse the most relevant changes and developments in their urban, suburban and rural systems.

Beliefs about the gender division of parental leave and characteristics associated with them

    No full text
The presented research set in a Croatian context explores beliefs about parental/maternity leave and factors explaining these beliefs. The data was gathered on a nationally representative sample of people living in Croatia (N=1000). Participants were asked questions about their beliefs towards parental leave take-up by the mother and the father, their socio-demographic data, attendance of religious services, partners’ income disparity and gender-role beliefs. The results show that around 49% of both men and women believe that it is solely the mother’s responsibility to use the entire leave, an additional 27% believe that the father should take some part of the leave, and around 24% believe that parents should share the leave equally. Men and women who support more equally shared leave take-up attend religious services less often and hold more egalitarian beliefs about gender division of labour, but do not differ in partners’ income disparity. These results imply that gender ideology theory is more applicable in the explanation of beliefs about the gender division of parental leave compared to time-allocation theory. Results of the multinomial logistic regressions show that the strongest predictor of the belief about leave take-up is the gender-role belief. The less the participants believe that the gender division of labour should be traditionally divided, the more likely they are to support equally shared leave between parents. The implication of these findings is that shifts towards supporting gender egalitarian leave take-up will most likely not occur until the attitudes toward gender roles become more egalitarian in general.

(IN ENGLISH: The main subject of this analysis is the structure and dynamics of values among youth in Croatia in the last three decades. The paper combines data from five empirical studies on representative samples of young people from all over Croatia. Longitudinal analysis of individual and societal values starts with 1986 and ends with 2013 which, on one hand enabled comparison of study data from socialist and post-socialist period and on the other hand it enabled detection of changes that occurred during the transition period.

Network and actor attribute effects on the performance of researchers in two fields of social science in a small peripheral community

    No full text
The aim of this study is to explore the network effects of the national and disciplinary community and actor attribute effects on the future performance of scientists in two fields of social sciences in Croatia. Based on the publication data from 1992 to 2012, extracted from three databases, we used the co-authorship network from the period 1992–2001 for the specification of nine structural effects to predict individual performance in the 2002–2012 period. Employing the auto-logistic actor attribute models allowed the inclusion of six actor attributes and the analysis of their effects simultaneously with network effects. The results show that future performance is dependent on the national and disciplinary network both in the psychology field and in the sociology field. When controlling for actor attribute effects, these structural effects play a significant role only in sociology, where activity in the network is a negative predictor and having a tie with an actor who is going to be above average in productivity is a positive predictor of the outcome. Institution type in psychology, age and the previous productivity in sociology are significant actor attribute effects. We used log-odds to demonstrate the probabilities of the outcome for three prototypical egonet structures: open, closed and complex; with different numbers of alters with attribute. Specific directions for future research are identified

Cultural capital - a shift in perspective: an analysis of PISA 2009 data for Croatia

    No full text
Using PISA 2009 data for Croatia, this paper addresses the relationship between socio-economic background, cultural capital and educational attainment. Following Bourdieu, we emphasized the importance of interpreting cultural capital effects as effects of family habitus. The results indicated that the material and the relational dimension of cultural capital had independent effects on science literacy results. Although there was no significant interaction effect between socio-economic status and cultural capital, the analysis suggested both a tendency for social reproduction as well as the possibility for social mobility of students with lower socio- economic status

Understanding of photosynthesis concepts related to students’ age

    Get PDF
In Croatian schools, the complex photosynthesis concept is presented several times during primary and secondary school, each time with more detail. The problems in understanding photosynthesis processes are known from many previous studies and our own research ; thus we aimed to investigate how the students’ understanding of the basic photosynthesis concepts increases during the schooling period, and is it enhanced by gradual introduction of new contents. The present study was conducted on 269 students from 6 schools and 35 students preparing to be biology teachers. To test the students’ conceptual understanding, we implemented a question about the trends of O2 and CO2 gas concentrations during the night, which was expected to lead students to a correct explanation of photosynthesis, including the issues of the plants’ respiration and the absence of photosynthesis. Students of all age groups gave mainly incomplete explanations. The best result was achieved by the youngest participants in the age of 11, who have relied on the freshly acquired and well trained, but reproductive knowledge. Older students’ answers (aged 15, 17 and 22), which include more detail about the light-dependent and light-independent reactions, suggested that they developed misconceptions such as the belief that “oxygen is produced in Calvin cycle during the night” and that “CO2 converts to O2”. Student's explanations indicate the consistency of their understanding of the process, which does not change with gradual introduction of new contents as they are older. The observed misunderstanding could be linked to the cumulative introduction of the complex theoretical contents, but excluding research- based learning, as well as to inadequate time dedicated to establishing connections between students’ pre-conceptions and novel information. Our research results might be a strong argument supporting the upcoming change in the national curriculum
