Supplementary Information The online version contains supplementary material available at https://doi.org/10.1007/s13280 025-02200-1.Despite the growing research interest regarding the perceptions of forest-related stakeholders about forest functions and values, the views of social actors not directly involved in forestry have been largely overlooked, particularly in Southern European countries like Portugal. This article addresses this gap by analyzing the social perceptions regarding the functions of the Matas do Litoral, public-managed forests in the Centre Region of Portugal, severely impacted by the mega-fires of October 2017. Through a hierarchical cluster analysis of survey results collected from 1000 inhabitants of the adjacent parishes of the Matas, three groups were identified—‘‘The Moderately Interested,’’ ‘‘The Comprehensively Interested’’ and ‘‘The Environmentally Interested’’—based on significant differences regarding their perceptions of forest functions, the future of these areas, essential factors for effective forest management, the mega-fires and their consequences. Sociodemographic characteristics—particularly age and literacy levels—forest ownership, knowledge and familiarity with these forests help to explain the differences between the three clusters.Acknowledgements The authors want to express their gratitude to the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, IP) for funding the research project ‘ShareFOREST—Sharing decisions in forests—participatory methodology for public and stakeholder engagement in the protection and valorization of forests in Portugal’ (PCIF/GRF/0050/2019) from which this article derives, as well as the project [UIDB/04928/2020]. Role of distinct export strategies in regional growth. A multi-regional input-output approach (PReMMIA)

No full text
The relationship between exports and economic growth is a critical aspect of contemporary economic policy at both national and regional levels. However, until recently, the lack of regional data has hindered comprehensive empirical analysis of trade at the regional level, limiting our understanding of why different strategies yield varying national and regional economic outcomes in terms of growth, income distribution, labor versus capital gains, and balance of payments. This paper offers both a methodological contribution and a policy-focused analysis. First, it introduces the Portuguese Regions Model for Multi-Impact Analysis (PReMMIA) by providing a detailed account of its development, including the preparation of national-level data, the regionalization of input-output tables, the specification of structural forms, and the assumptions underlying the model’s closure. Then, PReMMIA is applied to evaluate how diverse export specialization strategies lead to distinct socio-economic impacts. The results highlight the potential for spillover effects across various scenarios and emphasize the need for decision-makers to understand the economic complexities and trade-offs in their decisions.Funding text This work has been funded by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., through Projects UIDB/05037/2020, UIDB/04928/2020, CEECINST/00126/2021 and 2023.02227.BDANA. Business innovation plays a fundamental role in companies' competitiveness and economic development. This thesis aims to identify and analyse the determinants of innovation in Portuguese companies, with a special focus on the Engineering & Tooling Cluster, a strategic sector for the national industry. The study investigates the relationship between innovation and factors such as Investment in R&D, External Collaboration, Government Policies, Workforce Qualification, and Internationalization & Foreign Trade. To achieve this objective, a quantitative approach was adopted, based on data from the Community Innovation Survey (CIS 2022). Through the application of multiple linear regression analysis, the impact of explanatory variables on business innovation was evaluated. The results demonstrate that Investment in R&D is the most influential factor in innovation, reinforcing the need for continuous research efforts to drive the development of new products and processes. External Collaboration also emerges as a crucial element, showing that companies that establish strategic partnerships—with universities, research centers, or other firms—have greater innovation capacity. Additionally, Government Policies, including tax incentives and financial support, significantly impact business innovation, highlighting the importance of an adequate institutional framework. Workforce Qualification is confirmed as a relevant factor for innovation, as companies with highly skilled employees are more likely to develop innovative solutions. Lastly, Internationalization & Foreign Trade demonstrate a positive relationship with innovation, indicating that participation in global markets fosters the absorption of new knowledge and innovative practices. It is concluded that innovation in the Engineering & Tooling Cluster results from the interaction between investment, knowledge, and collaboration, making it essential to foster an environment conducive to technological development. The findings emphasize the need for effective public policies, innovation incentives, and strategies that promote cooperation between companies and institutions within the innovation system

Management practices are constantly changing amid intense competitive global pressure. This can put a strain on managers in terms of adapting to new challenges that arise from rapid transformations. While there is an emphasis on timely transformations in order to increase efficiency and productivity gains, there can also be a relaxation when managers have reached their pinnacle and achieved their goals. The goal of this editorial is to focus on hot management trends which is an important topic given the ever shifting business environment. Well-known academics were asked to write about what they see as the main management trends affecting society at the current time period. They each have diverse views based on their area of expertise and thought processes. For the Journal of Management & Organization, it is critical that we look into management trends in order to inform practice but also to enrichen theory. It is exciting times with many things happening regarding management that makes it exciting to read about what may occur in the future.Miguel Pina e Cunha acknowledges support from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (UID/ECO/00124/2019, UIDB/00124/2020 and Social Sciences DataLab, PINFRA/22209/2016), POR Lisboa and POR Norte (Social Sciences DataLab, PINFRA/22209/2016)

No full text

Internship Report at Oceano Fresco

No full text
The increasing global demand for sustainable protein sources has positioned aquaculture as a key solution for food security and environmental conservation. This internship at Oceano Fresco focused on the cultivation of the native European clam species Venerupis corrugata and Ruditapes decussatus using innovative aquaculture techniques. The internship involved hands-on participation in hatchery operations, including broodstock handling, spawning, larval rearing, and microalgae cultivation, along with microbiological monitoring and biosecurity measures. Additionally, a research project was conducted to evaluate the impact of different conditioning methods on broodstock gonadal maturation and reproductive success. Results showed that broodstock conditioned in a recirculating system (R) exhibited 43.8% higher egg production, a 15.3 percentage point increase in hatching success, and nearly double the number of viable D-larvae compared to those in a flow-through system (FT). Despite no significant differences in broodstock survival or gonadal maturation rates between treatments, the R system facilitated faster reproductive development and improved larval viability. These findings highlight the potential of optimized conditioning protocols to enhance hatchery efficiency and contribute to the sustainable production of bivalves. Implementing such strategies could increase the availability of broodstock year-round, fostering greater independence from natural reproductive cycles and enabling continuous cultivation throughout the year

Fear of Death, Concept of a Good Death and Self-Compassion Among University Students in Portugal: A Cross-Sectional Study

No full text
Article number - 2382Background/Objectives: Historically, humankind has consistently regarded death as an uncomfortable topic. Although death and dying are unescapable, they are frequently overlooked in formal education, as discussing or acknowledging them is believed to provoke emotional or psychological discomfort. To the best of our knowledge, little is known about the influence of the fear of death on the lives of university students. To fill this gap, this study aimed to examine the relationship between the concept of a good death, fear of death and self-compassion among university students in Portugal. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Portugal between November 2024 and January 2025 with 310 university students using an e-survey. Personal questionnaire and the Portuguese versions of the Good Death Concept Scale, the Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale, and the Self-Compassion Scale were used. JAMOVI statistical software (version 2.7.6.) was used for descriptive analysis, independent sample t-tests, one-way ANOVA with post hoc analysis, and Pearson correlation analysis. To identify the factors associated with fear of death, a multiple linear regression analysis was conducted. This study adhered to the STROBE checklist for reporting. Results: A total of 310 students were included. The average age was 25 ± 8.52 years, and 75.2% were female. The total mean score for fear of death was 99.22 ± 21.97, indicating relatively low fear levels. However, health sciences students presented higher fear of death rates compared with non-health counterparts. Age and gender differences were also found, with female and younger students reporting significantly higher levels of fear of death (p < 0.01). The Pearson correlation matrix indicated that fear of death is positively correlated with the concept of a good death, while negatively correlated with self-compassion (p < 0.01). Key factors influencing fear of death include age, gender, closure and control domains, and the overidentification subscale (adjusted R-Squared valued [R2] = 0.352). Conclusions: The results suggest that students are often poorly prepared to deal with death-related issues (revealing fear) and with negative thoughts and feelings about mortality. In this vein, it is necessary to implement curricular educational interventions focusing on death education as well as actively involving students in compassionate community initiatives, increasing their awareness and self-confidence about EoL care. This study was supported by FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. A minha prática é colaborativa

No full text
