Prevalence of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder in Portuguese children aged 2–10 years: a cross-sectional study

    No full text
Article number - 272Background Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is an eating disorder characterised by the avoidance or restriction of food intake, associated with high sensory sensitivity, disinterest in eating, or fear of adverse consequences. It can lead to nutritional deficiencies, impaired growth, or psychosocial difficulties. Although recognition of ARFID has increased internationally, prevalence data in Portugal remain scarce. Methods This cross-sectional, descriptive observational study assessed the prevalence of ARFID in children aged 2–10 years attending a private outpatient clinic. Paediatricians applied DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria during routine consultations. Parents completed online questionnaires, including the Children’s Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ) and the Child Feeding Questionnaire (CFQ). Results Of the 163 children assessed, ARFID was diagnosed in 3.1% of cases. Four of the five identified children were male (80%), with a mean age of 5.8 years (SD = 2.17). On the CEBQ, children with ARFID showed the highest mean scores on the food fussiness and satiety responsiveness subscales, indicating greater selectivity and heightened sensitivity to fullness. The lowest mean scores were observed in emotional overeating and desire to drink. On the CFQ, perceived responsibility and monitoring were the subscales with the highest mean values. Conclusions This study provides the first prevalence estimate of ARFID in Portuguese clinical practice. Although the small sample limits generalisability, the findings emphasise the need to raise awareness among both clinicians and parents to promote earlier recognition, thereby improving support for children and families and helping to reduce the long-term impact of ARFID.This work was funded by Portuguese national funds provided by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT)(UID/05704/2023); and RN is funded by FCT/UIDB/05704/2020

We are very grateful to the Municipality of Leiria for the partnership with the project Veggies4myHeart and to the principals, teachers, staff, and families of the preschools with which we partnered on this project.Article number - 49Background Vegetable consumption among children is below recommended. Given the critical role of vegetable consumption in health, it is essential to identify effective strategies to promote this intake. This study aimed to test the efficacy of a superhero’s storybook (SB) as a nutrition education strategy on the willingness to try (WTT) 10 different vegetables in preschool children and relate WTT with food neophobia, preferences, age, and body mass index. Methods This is an experimental study conducted in three Portuguese preschools. The intervention consisted of 20-min educational sessions once a week for 5 weeks, using a SB for nutrition education, to 178 children aged 2 to 6 years. A baseline and a post-test were conducted to determine the impact of the nutrition education strategy on the WTT ten vegetables. WTT was assessed using the Farfan-Ramirez WTT (FR-WTT) scale. Kruskal–Wallis H test, Spearman correlation, and Wilcoxon test were used for statistical analysis. Results The mean FR-WTT total score at baseline was significantly lower than the mean FR-WTT total score at post-test [M = 22.79 (S.D. = 11.85) versus M = 24.39 (S.D. = 11.77)], respectively. The intervention promoted a significant increase in the WTT of half of the vegetables offered and the total FR-WTT score. Conclusion The storybook from the Veggies4myHeart project demonstrated positive results in increasing WTT vegetables. However, it is essential to understand the project’s impact at home and in the long term. It is necessary to find valuable strategies to increase vegetable consumption in different contexts, including schools and at home.Open access funding provided by FCT|FCCN (b-on).

    No full text
This intership report consists of the development of a proposal of a Marketing Plan for Graçatur – Agência de Viagens e Turismo, Lda. The purpose of developing a marketing plan is to be alert to the market, identify strategies that allow innovation for the costumer, bringing to consumers what they identify with. The theme motivation for the present work arose from the fact that the company does not have a marketing plan, so during the internship it was proposed to me to carry it out. The methodology of this work was based on observation and daily participation throughout the eight months of the internship, where I was given access to several documents and data that helped in elaboration of the aforementioned plan.During the internship, the knowledge acquired during the Master’s in Marketing and Touristic Promotion was also applied in various activities, both from an operational and strategic point of view. At the end of the work, it is concluded that travel agencies with a smaller dimension in the market have an easier time deciding which market segment they are into and which Marketing policies and strategies to apply, when compared to larger agency groups. Graçatur is an example of a family business, with several years of experience in the market, however, it has not followed the evolution in terms of use of communication media, especially digital ones. Taking these conclusions into account, in the future, it would be important to carry out a digital marketing plan with the objective of developing this type of marketing strategies, improving Graçatur’s online presence and consequently expanding its type of target audience and its customer portfolio

    No full text

These transforms are defined by replacing the Euclidean plane wave with a corresponding hyperbolic relativistic plane wave in one dimension multiplied by quadratic modulations in both the hyperbolic spatial and frequency domains, giving the hyperbolic counterpart of the Euclidean LCTs. We prove the fundamental properties of the partial QHLCTs and the right-sided QHLCT by employing hyperbolic geometry tools and establish main results such as the Riemann-Lebesgue Lemma, the Plancherel and Parseval Theorems, and inversion formulas. The analysis is carried out in terms of novel hyperbolic derivative and hyperbolic primitive concepts, which lead to the differentiation and integration properties of the QHLCTs. The results are applied to establish two quaternionic versions of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle for the right-sided QHLCT. These uncertainty principles prescribe a lower bound on the product of the effective widths of quaternion-valued signals in the hyperbolic spatial and frequency domains. It is shown that only hyperbolic Gaussian quaternion functions minimize the uncertainty relations.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    No full text

From Desalination to Governance: A Comparative Study of Water Reuse Strategies in Southern European Hospitality

    No full text
Article number - 6725As climate change intensified water scarcity in Southern Europe, tourism-dependent regions such as Portugal’s Algarve faced growing pressure to adapt their water management systems. This study investigated how hotel groups in the Algarve have adopted and communicated water reuse technologies—specifically desalination and greywater recycling—under environmental, institutional, and reputational constraints. A comparative qualitative case study was conducted involving three hotel groups—Vila Vita Parc, Pestana Group, and Vila Galé—selected through purposive sampling based on organizational capacity and technology adoption stage. The analysis was supported by a supplementary mini-case from Mallorca, Spain. Publicly accessible documents, including sustainability reports, media coverage, and policy frameworks, were thematically coded using organizational environmental behavior theory and the OECD Principles on Water Governance. The results demonstrated that (1) higher organizational capacity was associated with greater maturity in water reuse implementation; (2) communication transparency increased alongside technological advancement; and (3) early-stage adopters encountered stronger financial, regulatory, and operational barriers. These findings culminated in the development of the Maturity–Communication–Governance (MCG) Framework, which elucidates how internal resources, stakeholder signaling, and institutional alignment influence sustainable infrastructure uptake. This research offered policy recommendations to scale water reuse in tourism through financial incentives, regulatory simplification, and public–private partnerships. The study contributed to the literature on sustainable tourism and decentralized climate adaptation, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals 6.4, 12.6, and 13.This paper was financed by National Funds of the FCT—Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology within the project «UIDB/04928/2020» and under the Scientific Employment Stimulus—Institutional Call CEECINST/00051/2018

Wireless Environmental Monitoring and Control in Poultry Houses: A Conceptual Study

    No full text
Article number - 32Modern commercial poultry farming typically occurs indoors, where partial or complete environmental control is employed to enhance production efficiency. Maintaining optimal conditions, such as temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide, and ammonia levels, is essential for ensuring bird comfort and maximizing productivity. Monitoring the conditions of poultry houses requires reliable and intelligent management systems. This study introduces a Wireless Monitoring and Control System developed to regulate environmental conditions within poultry facilities. The system continuously monitors key parameters via a network of distributed sensor nodes, which transmit data wirelessly to a centralized control unit using Wi-Fi. The control unit processes the incoming data, stores it in a database, and adjusts actuators accordingly to maintain ideal conditions. A web-based dashboard allows users to monitor and control the environment in real time. Field testing confirmed the system’s effectiveness in keeping conditions optimal, supporting poultry welfare and operational efficiency. This work was funded by FCT/MEC through national funds and co-funded by the FEDER-PT2020 partnership agreement under the project UIDB/00308/2020 (DOI 10.54499/UIDB/00308/2020). No full text
This article aims to make known a pedagogical proposal oriented to the understanding of “informative texts” and implemented in the discipline of Portuguese, in a 5th grade class, during the school year of 2022/2023. Framed by a specific didactic procedure – the didactic path – the intervention focused on contact with “informative texts” belonging to various genres and focused on the communicative intentions and the thematic-structural dimension of the texts. The investigative work was preceded and followed by the collection of the conceptions on the notion of “information text” (written answers to the question “What do I know about the informative text?”). Within the final answers, the students showed evolution in relation to the initial conceptions (especially at the level of structure and communicative intentions), which proves the effectiveness of the didactic path implemented.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
