After the Second World War, the creation of the UN influenced movements for colonial independence. Portugal resisted, facing the Colonial War, which influenced the development of rehabilitation nursing. Objective: To analyse the precursor practices of rehabilitation nursing in the Portuguese Colonial War. Methodology: Use of the historical method to summarise the historical narrative. Results: Developments in healthcare made it necessary to provide better “technical preparation” through the creation of “Technical Nursing Schools”. The “nursing and colonial social action course” covered “physical education” and “physical agents”. In 1961, the staff of the paratrooper troops began to include nurses. Nurses also played a role in “health inspections” and collaboration with the Armed Forces in the naval commands of the colonies, in the Overseas Customs Service and on guard ships. In 1963, the nursing staff at the Overseas Hospital included “physiotherapy” nurses and “those specialising in orthopaedics, rehabilitation...”. At the time, in 1964, the health situation led to the regulation of the Overseas Health and Assistance Services, recognising the importance of specialised nursing in Overseas Territories. Conclusion: Rehabilitation nursing emerged in Portugal in 1965, influenced by a previous social and political context that created new health needs.

    No full text
Introduction: This work aimed to first validate the Portuguese version of the FANTASTIC questionnaire that allowed the assessment of lifestyle behaviors through a sample comprising 562 Portuguese subjects; second, through a quasi-experimental study, we tested the effectiveness of a physical exercise program designed specifically for people with type 2 diabetes based on subjective wellbeing and lifestyle changes. Methods: For 9 months, a total of 31 subjects (14 males and 17 females with type 2 diabetes aged between 58 and 79 years) were involved in a physical exercise program of moderate intensity three times per week for 75 min each session; the program included a combination of aerobic, resistance, agility, balance, and flexibility exercises (Diabetes em Movimento). Results: Regarding the first goal of this study, the results show a reliable factorial solution with nine factors and 27 items from the FANTASTIC questionnaire. With regard to the second goal of this study, the results indicate that subjects involved in the exercise program show significantly improved positive affect, satisfaction with life, physical activity, sleep, stress, and nutrition behaviors, in addition to significantly diminished negative affect. However, these results should be interpreted with some caution as our study did not have a control group and the sample was one of convenience, which limits the capacity of inference of the results. Conclusion: The present results support evidence confirming the positive effects of Physical Exercise through the Diabetes em Movimento® program to foster SWB and promote healthier lifestyle behaviors among T2D subjects. Therefore, we intend to conduct further studies in the future to consolidate the findings of the present study.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

NNdef: livecoding digital musical instruments in SuperCollider using functional reactive programming

Conference name 6th ACM SIGPLAN International Workshop on Functional Art, Music, Modeling, and Design, FARM 2018, co-located with ICFP 2018, St. Louis, MO, USA, 29 September 2018.Conference code - 140500.The SuperCollider audio synthesis environment allows the definition of Synths, digital instruments which generate sound using a graph of interconnected unit generators. In SuperCollider the definition of a Synth is mostly declarative, on the other hand the logic for controlling parameters of a Synth using musical controllers is usually implemented in a different context using callbacks and explicit state. This paper presents a different approach where functional reactive programming (FRP) is used to define the control logic of the instrument, taking inputs from musical controllers, mobile apps or graphical user interface (GUI) widgets and sending outputs to the audio graph. Both audio and FRP graphs are defined in the same context and compiled simultaneously avoiding a hard division between audio and control logic. An FRP implementation is used in the NNdef class to enable livecoding of both audio and FRP code, with hotswap allowing an interactive workflow. Also included is a system to persist the state in the FRP network in order to save and recall the instrument at a later time.Part of this material is based upon work supported by the Foundation for Scienceand Technology Portugal under Grant No. SFRH/BD/76694/2011.N/

The Impact of Geographical Factors on the Banking Sector in El Salvador

    No full text
This study explores how geographical factors shape El Salvador’s banking sector, particularly focusing on regional disparities, urbanization, and vulnerability to natural disasters affecting access to financial services. By employing a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative data and qualitative interviews, the research analyzes how these geographical challenges impact financial inclusion and banking development. Data from the Central Reserve Bank of El Salvador and financial institutions is examined alongside Geographic Information Systems (GISs) to illustrate the spatial distribution of banking services. Interviews with stakeholders, including bank representatives and clients from urban and rural areas, reveal a significant urban–rural divide, with approximately 75% of bank branches and 80% of ATMs situated in urban centers, particularly in San Salvador. Rural areas face limited access to formal banking due to challenging topography and inadequate infrastructure, leading to increased financial exclusion and reliance on informal systems. Natural disasters further disrupt banking infrastructure and heighten the need for emergency loans. While urbanization has spurred financial growth, it has also resulted in informal settlements with restricted access to formal services. As its main contribution, this study provides one of the first in-depth, geographically grounded analyses of financial exclusion in El Salvador, offering original insights into how spatial inequalities and disaster vulnerability intersect to shape banking access and economic participation. The study calls for a more inclusive banking sector, recommending mobile and digital banking expansion, agent banking in underserved areas, and improved disaster risk management to enhance economic participation across all regions

This report aims to provide a critical and reflective analysis of the journey undertaken to acquire the common and specific competencies of a Master's Degree Nurse specialising in Community Health and Public Health Nursing. The first part will be a brief critical and reflective analysis of the clinical training that took place throughout my academic career, namely at the Médio Tejo Public Health Unit and the Community Care Unit, where I acquired and developed a specialist nurse's common and specific competencies. In the second part, I will describe the Community Intervention Project developed by me, based on the Health Planning methodology, covering the following stages: diagnosis of the situation, definition of priorities, setting of objectives, choice of strategies, preparation and implementation of the project and its evaluation. The Community Intervention Project entitled “Community Empowerment of polymedication elderly people to adhere to their medication regime” covered 21 elderly people from the municipality of . An integrative review of the subject's literature was carried out to support the practice with a scientific evidence base. An ageing population is a reality all over the world, leading to an increase in the existence of chronic diseases among the population and, in turn, the use of multiple drugs for its control. This, coupled with the gradual and progressive physical and cognitive decline experienced by the elderly, makes them a vulnerable group. Patient safety in general, and medication safety in particular, is a public health problem and it is up to the Nurse Specialising in Community and Public Health Nursing to intervene in this issue. This project assessed the level of Community Empowerment by applying the Community Assessment, Intervention and Empowerment Model. The Community Empowerment Assessment Scale and the Treatment Adherence Measure scale were used to assess community management. The data obtained, together with the results of the literature review, allow the definition of nursing diagnoses, developing interventions with the elderly community and improve their adherence to the medication regime. At a later stage, the project is expected to be expanded, ideally to the entire area covered by the Médio Tejo Local Health Unit

Mapping Gamification for Sustainable Urban Development: Generating New Insights for Tourism Education

    No full text
Although scientific literature already shows the connections between gamification, tourism and sustainability, there is still a gap in research into how gamification can transform cities into more playful, sustainable and intelligent tourism destinations. Gamification in tourism promotes engagement, education and innovation, enriching experiences and driving the development of smart destinations. This study advances this debate by employing a mixed methodology, combining a systematic review (supported by Rayyan, an artificial intelli gence) and content analysis (supported by Iramuteq, a textual software, version 0.7 Alpha 2). Additionally, we used Dreamscape by Voyant Tools online for a geographical analysis of the textual corpus formed by n = 61 abstracts. The intersection of main findings from the techniques applied provides eight new insights on urban tourism education through gam ification, which are as follows: (1) exchange between the Global North and South; (2) local and global participation; (3) collaborations to achieve the 17 SDGs; (4) improve urban destina tion marketing by ethics principles; (5) deepening disruption technology and ethics studies; (6) the transformation of reality by sciences; (7) gamification on interdisciplinary perspectives; and (8) the role of gamification on the tourism and hospitality industry. The results suggest that gamification in tourism can offer a new ontological approach to addressing sustainable urban development, highlighting both theoretical and practical challenges. This research has both theoretical and practical implications, advancing the concept of ecogaming by integrating technology, entertainment and sustainability, and reinforces its potential to educate and engage in sustainable urban tourism practices.N/

Part of special issue: CENTERIS - International Conference on ENTERprise Information Systems / ProjMAN - International Conference on Project MANagement / HCist - International Conference on Health and Social Care Information Systems and Technologies.Conference name: 16th International Conference on ENTERprise Information Systems, CENTERIS 2024 - 12th International Conference on Project MANagement, ProjMAN 2024 - 14th International Conference on Health and Social Care Information Systems and Technologies, HCist 2024Conference city: Funchal, Madeira, Portugal Conference date: 13 November 2024 - 15 November 2024Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a highly prevalent progressive respiratory disease, characterized by airflow limitation, respiratory symptoms, and exercise intolerance, which greatly impacts patient’s daily life. Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is a well-recognized, cost-effective, and safe intervention with known benefits, recommended by COPD management guidelines. Despite this, there is a potential sub-diagnosis of the condition and low access rates to PR in the COPD population. Reasons may include a lack of detailed knowledge about how to refer potential patients to PR and the lack of specific criteria for the referral. Information about the patient’sstatus and available services also plays a vital role in referrals. Additionally, there is high heterogeneity of outcomes and measures reported in the literature for PR, hindering the benchmark and dissemination of its efficacy and evidence synthesis; it also prevents communication and inter-institutional and international work. Thus, improving information availability and flow can facilitate a more efficient process. This study aims to develop an interoperable digital protocol for PR referral, to support healthcare professionals in the datacollection and referral process, making the process simpler and more efficient while also contributing to a transparent and coherent interinstitutional data exchange and continuous workflow. The variables and associatedoutcomes recommended by the Portuguese General Health Direction (Direção Geral da Saúde, DGS) in the standard 014/2019 regarding PR programs referral in primary care were described and translated to the HL7-FHIR health datastandard. The flow of the protocol was also presented. This work aims to contribute to facilitating the process of PR referral by proposing a FHIR-based approach for describing relevant information and the decision-making process for PR referral, aiming to contribute for the support of health professionals in the referral decision-making process in primary care, making it simpler and more efficient while also contributing to inter-institutional workflow articulation and information availability.Acknowledgements :This work is supported by Aviso2022-C05i0101-02 Agendas/Alianças mobilizadoras para a reindustrialização, Projeto nº C630926586-00465198.NHipólitois funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia932 Nádia Hipólito et al. / Procedia Computer Science 256 (2025) 925–932 10.54499/2021.05188.BD.R Almeida is funded by the “FCT Scientific Employment Stimulus –Institutional Call” (CEECINST/00056/2021)
