Long-Range RFID Indoor Positioning System for an Autonomous Wheelchair
Article number - 2542(This article belongs to the Special Issue Advances in RFID-Based Indoor Positioning Systems)A new Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) indoor positioning system (IPS) has been developed to operate in environments where the Global Positioning System (GPS) is unavailable. Traditional RFID tracking systems, such as anti-theft systems in clothing stores, typically work within close proximity to exit doors. This paper presents a novel RFID IPS capable of locating and tracking passive RFID tags over a larger area with greater precision. These tags, costing approximately EUR 0.10 each, are in the form of small stickers that can be attached to any item requiring tracking. The proposed system is designed for an autonomous wheelchair, built from scratch, which will be identified and monitored using passive RFID tags. Our new RFID IPS, with a 12 m range, is implemented in this “smart” wheelchair. This work was supported by the FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. by project reference UIDB/50008/2020, and DOI identifier https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDB/50008/2020

An Automated Repository for the Efficient Management of Complex Documentation
Article number - 205This article belongs to the Special Issue Applications of Information Extraction, Knowledge Graphs, and Large Language ModelsThe accelerating digitalization of the public and private sectors has made information technologies (IT) indispensable in modern life. As services shift to digital platforms and technologies expand across industries, the complexity of legal, regulatory, and technical requirement documentation is growing rapidly. This increase presents significant challenges in managing, gathering, and analyzing documents, as their dispersion across various repositories and formats hinders accessibility and efficient processing. This paper presents the development of an automated repository designed to streamline the collection, classification, and analysis of cybersecurity-related documents. By harnessing the capabilities of natural language processing (NLP) models—specifically Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT) technologies—the system automates text ingestion, extraction, and summarization, providing users with visual tools and organized insights into large volumes of data. The repository facilitates the efficient management of evolving cybersecurity documentation, addressing issues of accessibility, complexity, and time constraints. This paper explores the potential applications of NLP in cybersecurity documentation management and highlights the advantages of integrating automated repositories equipped with visualization and search tools. By focusing on legal documents and technical guidelines from Portugal and the European Union (EU), this applied research seeks to enhance cybersecurity governance, streamline document retrieval, and deliver actionable insights to professionals. Ultimately, the goal is to develop a scalable, adaptable platform capable of extending beyond cybersecurity to serve other industries that rely on the effective management of complex documentation
Assessing Ecological Quality on the Rocky Coast of Abalo Beach, Portugal
Portugal’s rich marine biodiversity, home to approximately 550 seaweed species, is distributed across biogeographical regions influenced by Atlantic and Mediterranean climates. Human-induced stressors, including habitat degradation,
pollution, and climate change, have impacted seaweed ecosystems, changed the
distribution patterns and promoting the invasion of alien species. This paper evaluates the ecological dynamics of seaweed communities on the rocky coast of Abalo Beach, Portugal, using the Marine Macroalgae Assessment Tool (MarMAT) in 2022 and 2023. The MarMAT methodology, endorsed by the Portuguese Environment Agency, assesses the ecological quality of coastal areas based on taxonomic composition, diversity, and biomass of macroalgae. The assessment revealed different percentages of late-successional species (ESGI) and annual (ESGII) seaweeds, indicating a subtle decrease in late-successional species. Of concern is the increase in invasive species from one in 2009 to six in 2023, suggesting a potential threat to ecosystem integrity. Comparative analysis with previous studies confirms the ongoing ecolog ical quality and resilience of Abalo Beach. The article underscores the importance of continuous monitoring amid environmental changes and the rise of invasive species. This work was funded by national funds through FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia for I.P., within the scope of the project UID/04292/MARE—Centro de Ciências do Mar e do Ambiente and the project LA/P/0069/2020, granted to the Associate Laboratory ARNET.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This eBook, developed within the scope of the Embalagem do Futuro® Project (PPS08), summarizes the main findings of a study on household behaviours and attitudes towards the sorting of used packaging (plastic, metal/aluminium, glass, cardboard/paper, and coffee capsules) in the Intermunicipal Community of the Leiria Region (CIMRL). Based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour, one of the main theoretical frameworks used to understand the complexity of human social behaviour, together with moral norms and pro-environmental values, an online survey was conducted among households in the CIMRL. From the 1 113 validated responses, the results show a very positive attitude towards sorting used packaging, along with a sense of social pressure, moral obligation, and responsibility to do so. Households report that sorting is easy, that they have the knowledge to sort correctly, and that they hold strong proenvironmental values. Respondents declare that they sort all or almost all of their packaging waste: plastic (83%), metal/ aluminium (78%), glass (90%), and cardboard/paper (84%). Municipal recycling bins located in public spaces are the most frequently used collection points, except for coffee capsules, which are mainly deposited in recycling stations located in commercial establishments. Although most households are still unfamiliar with reverse vending machines, they express a strong intention to use them in the future and to recommend them to friends and family.Projecto:

Using necessary condition analysis to understand digital storytelling’s impact on consumer behavior
Digitalization disrupted the marketing landscape, enabling connection with stakeholders, but also introducing heightened
competition and digitally empowered consumers. These consumers navigate a world of information overload, pushing brands
to look for innovative communication strategies to break through the clutter. Brand storytelling emerged as a powerful tool
in this regard, engaging consumers through cognitive and emotional pathways. This study explores the necessary conditions
for effective digital storytelling campaigns, using two techniques for data analysis. Using narrative transportation theory,
and survey consumer data, the research evidences the cognitive path foundational role to convert storytelling to purchase
intention. Conversely, the emotional path, while influential for word-of-mouth, is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condi-
tion for purchase intention. These findings highlight the strategic value of overall brand equity in storytelling campaigns,
offering actionable insights for more effective marketing strategies. This work was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, grant UIDB/00315/2020, UIDB/04928/2020 and UIDB/05583/2020)

This thesis presents the design, construction, and experimental validation of a modular and affordable tribometer, aimed at comparing friction and wear between materials. This is carried out under precision and reproducibility criteria that comply with the international ASTM G99 standard. The equipment was designed considering the budgetary constraints common to university laboratories. An adjustable dead weight system, load sensors (vertical and horizontal), and an aluminum structure that is simple to assemble and suitable for different experimental conditions were included.
The research focused on describing the tribological behavior of cylindrical test specimens made of nylon and structural steel under normal loads of 9.77 N, 15.51 N, and 33.52 N, as well as sliding distances of up to 2,000 meters; standardized abrasive surfaces were used for this purpose. The experimental protocol included the measurement of forces, friction coefficients, friction energy and power, and wear by loss of volume and mass, with corresponding calculations and metrological control.
The experimental findings showed that the tribometer can obtain stable and consistent friction coefficients for both materials (nylon: 0.28–0.60; steel: 0.20–0.75), as well as wear rates and dissipated energy in line with the literature and standard values for comparable abrasive mechanisms. Technological benefits were identified in the modularity, ease of recalibrating the applied weight, and structural strength; however, challenges were also detected related to having to recalculate the dead weight if the distance or effective radius of the sample holder is altered.
This development constitutes a significant contribution at both the academic and technological levels, as it allows the extension of standardized tribological tests to scenarios with scarce resources and paves the way for new lines of research in the optimization of materials and experimental methods in the field of tribology. The work establishes the foundation for future improvements in automation, extension of test variants, and adaptation to new applications in industrial and educational contexts
Solution for the management of Cybersecurity for Smart Homes
The rapid adoption of smart home devices has transformed modern homes by offering automation, convenience, and connectivity. However, this evolution also poses significant cybersecurity challenges. Many devices are not properly updated, rely on insecure communication protocols, or lack adequate user controls, making them vulnerable to external attacks. At the same time, most users do not have the technical knowledge necessary to manage network security, leaving their homes exposed despite growing awareness of cyber risks.
This project addresses these issues by proposing a practical cybersecurity solution designed specifically for smart homes. The goal is to provide a system that combines robust security measures with an intuitive interface accessible to both technical and non-technical users. The proposed solution enables the implementation of security measures in home networks, the secure management of connected devices, and real-time monitoring of activity, while offering advanced options for users who require greater control.
The solution was implemented and validated using real-world scenarios with typical smart devices. The results demonstrate that it is possible to achieve a balance between ease of use and robust protection in connected homes. This project therefore makes a concrete contribution to bridging the gap between complex cybersecurity mechanisms and the everyday needs of smart home users
