Since the Sputnik shock, doubts about the reliability of extended nuclear deterrence, whether Defender would risk their own security to assist Protégé, have been debated. Previous studies have emphasized that mutual trust between the Defender and Protégé is essential to reliability. However, extended nuclear deterrence is more like a three-party game. Both Defender and Protégé are influenced by their perceptions of Challenger's objectives, and those perceptions shape their own actions. Therefore, the author examines the reliability of extended nuclear deterrence from the perspective of threat perception. This article uses the examples of Japan and West Germany, both of which are U.S. allies that have renounced nuclear possession. By focusing on these two cases, the author analyzes their threat perceptions during the period when the two nations decided to join the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty and tries to measure how their threat perceptions affect their decisions on nuclear weapons. The conclusion drawn is that there is a positive correlation between the threat perception of Protégé and the reliability of extended nuclear deterrence, while there is a negative correlation between the differences in threat perception between Defender and Protégé and the reliability of extended nuclear deterrence
Online Learning Post-COVID: Faculty caring in the eyes of university students
The escalation in online learning post-COVID has created a pressing need to consider faculty-student interactions in a virtual environment. A sequential explanatory, mixed-method design was used to investigate university students’ perceptions of faculty caring online following the COVID- 19 pandemic. Participants were 46 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in one of four programs offered either fully online or with a significant number of required courses offered in an asynchronous online format at the same university in a single semester. Results from the Student Perspectives of Caring Online Survey indicated participants’ feeling strongly about effective communication, specifically a detailed class calendar with a schedule and due dates as well as clear instructions regarding expectations for online communications, as a faculty behavior that conveyed caring. Qualitative data supported this finding and indicated that empathy and support from faculty were also highly valued. Implications of findings for online teaching practices are presented
The purposes of this book are twofold. The first objective is to enhance understanding of the role of a university president. The deepening of this understanding is intended for two primary audiences: the presidents themselves and individuals who may potentially rise to managerial positions in the future. Researchers and professionals in the field of higher education studies are considered indirect readers. The second objective is to contribute to the practical aspect of leadership development centered around the university president. In Japan, the market for university presidents is not well-established, and intentional leadership development is lacking. While there are opportunities to cultivate the presidents’ capabilities and support their role, this book aims to further expand these choices and opportunities through the presentation of case materials
The book is structured into three chapters. In the first chapter, the concept of the case method is reviewed and introduced, drawing on previous research. The case method involves addressing top-level decision-making scenarios, prompting learners to think from the same standpoint, and facilitating learning through discussions among learners, without providing a definitive solution. The second chapter outlines the 'National Survey of University Presidents on University Reform,' conducted as preparation for creating case materials. The survey focuses on presidents' perceptions of university reform, including reform efforts beyond successful cases. In the third chapter, twelve cases are presented, selected with consideration for a balanced representation of university types, including six private universities, three national universities, and three public universities.

This paper reports on the results of the 2023 Online Survey of Students' Perceptions of Peace, conducted jointly by the Center for Peace, Hiroshima University and the Yomiuri Shimbun, and makes some preliminary observations on changes in students' attitudes towards nuclear weapons over the past three years. In particular, the study examines the impact of the protracted Russo-Ukrainian war on students' views of peace in light of the dichotomous concepts of 'ideal' and 'reality' regarding the existence of nuclear weapons. Students' expectations for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons decreased, and they tended to focus more on reducing nuclear weapons. At the same time, students' expectations of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) increased, and the number of responses supporting Japan's signing and ratification of the treaty and its participation as observers increased
This paper reviews nine articles of a special section in the July 2022 issue of International Affairs, “Feminist interrogations of global nuclear politics,” guest-edited by Catherine Eschle and Shin Choi. This special section aims to highlight how the global nuclear order has been formulated by coloniality in gendered and racialized way. They argue that feminist International Relations analysis on nuclear politics should be revitalized to take comprehensive account o f the colonial matrix of power, its racialized underpinnings, and its contemporary realignments. The reviewed articles discuss issues i.e., indigenous women’s resistance against the nuclear fuel chain in North America; variously gendered images of the atomic bomb in Egypt and its implications; a possible feminist-Gandhian ethic as an alternative to unbridled nuclearization in India; the masculinity of the political readers in the Cuban Missile Crisis; Sweden’s masculine strategies of nuclear renunciation; Analysis of actual contents of gender-sensitive policies within the Non-Proliferation Treaty framework; and poetry as a political mean of Pacific women’s anti-nuclear activism. The reviewer finds this special section provide us clearer pictures of e.g. politically empowered women as anti-nuclear activists through traditional and non-political means like poetry; political leaders’ quest for masculine status; varied possibilities of gender-sensitive approach. The reviewer as an international lawyer argues that for feminist international lawyers to analyze nuclear regulation framework, it is of critical importance to understand the actual experience of the unrepresented people and consider the system to have their voice represented
Kawajiri, M. Karṇa and Arjuna: Reading the Heroic Tales of the Mahābhārata, 2022 is a recent Japanese translation of Chapters 49–69 of the eighth book (Karṇaparvan) of the Mahābhārata with an introduction to the epic, the stories surrounding Karṇa and Arjuna, and their cultural backgrounds. The Mahābhārata was translated into Japanese up to 8.49.24 by the late Katsuhiko Kamimura, whose death in 2003 unfortunately brought the translation to an abrupt end; the remainder of the epic has been left untranslated since then. Kawajiri’s book is intended as a continuation of Kamimura’s unfinished work.
Although Kawajiri’s determination to publish an accessible Japanese translation of the Mahābhārata is commendable, the book contains multiple imprecise descriptions and sloppy translations, causing the reader unnecessary confusion. The present paper discusses the ungrounded arguments advanced in the introductory part of the book and offers our new annotated translations for Chapters 66–67. In doing so, the present work aims to set an academic standard for philological research in Sanskrit literature and envision the future of studying this great epic.
