Social Study of Rural Poverty Patterns in Forest Countryside of Jembrana Regency
Jembrana is one of the eight administrative regencies in Bali Province. Located on the western tip of the island, the regency covers approximately 841.80 square kilometres. From the southern coastal lowlands bordering the Indian Ocean to the northern highlands, the region is largely mountainous and forested within a state-protected area. Residents in this region describe poverty as an extreme condition among their population. In 2024, approximately 12,900 people categorized as P0 were identified as poor. This study will examine how poverty is manifested and distributed in Jembrana Regency. This research uses a qualitative approach with an ethnographic design. Data collection techniques include gathering both primary and secondary data. The data analysis technique used in this research is the interactive model developed by Miles and Huberman. Based on interviews with informants, the findings show that poverty in villages bordering forests in Jembrana Regency is influenced by three main factors: the influence of traditional customs, the economic strength of the community, and challenges in managing natural resources. The costs incurred for traditional and customary activities often become a burden, diverting resources from basic needs and thus worsening economic conditions. The rural poor in Jembrana Regency fall into the category of relative poverty with limited access to basic services. The low income of the rural poor is also affected by their dependence on seasonal and annual forest crops. Efforts have been made to increase the income of poor residents through the processing of raw natural resources, but there are two main obstacles: the lack of community initiative to process forest products into value-added products, and the limited workforce due to the younger generation preferring to work outside the village
Socio-educational Support Gaps Between Rural and Urban Communities in Malaysia
This paper discusses the socio-education support gaps between rural and urban communities in Malaysia, highlighting the disparities that affect educational outcomes and opportunities. Despite significant advancements in Malaysia’s education system, students in rural areas continue to face substantial challenges, including limited access to resources, qualified teachers, and extracurricular activities compared to their urban counterparts. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from national educational statistics with qualitative interviews from educators, students, and community leaders. The findings reveal critical factors contributing to the educational divide, such as economic disparities, infrastructural limitations, and varying levels of parental involvement. Additionally, the research identifies successful intervention strategies implemented in both settings, providing insights into potential solutions to bridge these gaps. Ultimately, this study aims to inform policymakers and educators about the need for targeted support and resource allocation to ensure equitable educational opportunities for all Malaysian students, regardless of their geographic location. The implications of this research underscore the importance of fostering inclusive educational environments that address the unique needs of rural communities while promoting overall national progress

The Quadruple Helix Model in Dealing With Forest and Land Fires in a Human Security Approach
The study’s objective is to examine the quadruple helix model of forest and land fire management in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan from the standpoint of human security. Annual forest and land fires result in the formation of smoke haze and air pollution, posing a significant health hazard. Accordingly, the involvement of several stakeholders is necessary to tackle the issue. The project attempts to examine the role of states, corporations, academics, and communities in promoting environmental resilience by addressing forest and land fires, using a quadruple helix viewpoint. The research employed a qualitative exploratory methodology, supplemented by the utilization of Vos Viewer and Nvivo 12 Plus software for data management and visualization. This study demonstrates that the involvement of states, corporations, academia, and society in the Quadruple Helix framework will contribute to the establishment of environmental security in the management of forest and land fires. The study proposes that effective collaboration, coordination, and consultation among stakeholders are essential for devising appropriate strategies to address forest and land fires. Furthermore, adopting a strategy that takes into account the habits and traditions of local communities is a suitable option for effectively managing forest and land fires. The utilization of culture and traditions holds significant importance in society for the conservation of forests and the adjacent territories
Comparison of sexual function in fertile and infertile women with polycystic ovary syndrome: A cross-sectional study
Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects approximately 9.2% of women of childbearing age. Physical and psychological changes caused by PCOS might impair women’s sexual function. Women with PCOS may experience one of the most significant complications, which is infertility.
Objective: This study aimed to compare sexual function between fertile and infertile women diagnosed with PCOS.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 364 fertile and 239 infertile women with PCOS who referred to the Arash hospital gynecological clinics, Tehran, Iran from April 2019-February 2020. Participants were divided into 2 groups based on fertility: the fertile group (n = 364) and the infertile group (n = 239). They were asked to fill out a demographic survey and the female sexual function index (FSFI) questionnaires. Finally, the sexual performance index and demographic variables were compared between groups.
Results: The total FSFI score for fertile and infertile women was 23.70 ± 6.26 and 24.65 ± 4.04, respectively. Regarding FSFI, the differences between the 2 groups were not statistically significant in terms of total FSFI score (p = 0.391), desire (p = 0.863), lubrication (p = 0.583), satisfaction (p = 0.118), orgasm (p = 0.901), and arousal score (p = 0.405). However, the pain score was significantly higher in the fertile group (3.51 ± 1.27, 3.10 ± 1.11, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: Impaired sexual function in infertile women diagnosed with PCOS can be more associated with PCOS-related complications and other concurrent factors that affect sexual function rather than infertility. It seems that the effects of infertility on sexual function can be different in infertile women according to each person’s condition. Hence, screening for sexual dysfunction in women with PCOS and infertility should be deemed as a part of clinical assessment, leading to early diagnosis and improving their quality of life
Nocardia beijingensis Brain Abscess in an Immunocompetent Host in Malaysia: A Rare Diagnostic Challenge
Introduction: Cerebral Nocardia beijingensis infection is a rare disease that primarily affects immunocompromised hosts. While only a limited number of cases have been reported globally in immunocompetent individuals, none have been documented in Malaysia. In immunocompetent patients, cerebral nocardiosis can radiologically mimic a fatal malignancy, potentially leading to a delay in definitive therapy.
Case Report: A 54-year-old man with cerebral nocardiosis was initially misdiagnosed with high-grade glioma and defaulted on the referral to our hospital. Nearly 3 months later, he presented to the emergency department with worsening symptoms. Surgical intervention provided tissue and pus samples for microbiological examination, which yielded N. beijingensis susceptible to standard antimicrobial therapy. The brain abscess was surgically removed, and the patient was treated with systemic antibiotics. The symptoms and radiology findings showed significant improvement following the interventions.
Conclusion: This is the first reported case of a brain abscess caused by N. beijingensis in an immunocompetent host in Malaysia, initially misdiagnosed as a malignancy. This case highlights the importance of considering nocardial infections in the differential diagnosis of cerebral lesions, even in immunocompetent individuals. Surgical intervention plays a crucial role in obtaining a definitive diagnosis, as some cases may be effectively treated with a combination of surgery and antimicrobial therapy
Systems Thinking and Design Thinking: Combining Two Approaches for a Faster Design Process
Understanding the user is an important point in successful product design, but often, the process is difficult and takes a lot of time. This article aims to offer a way to shorten the process of the first stage in design thinking, namely empathizing, which normally takes up much of the time spent on a project. The process combines systems thinking into the design thinking process and applies it in a simulated project. The results of the simulations show that systems thinking not only speeds up time at the empathize stage but also covers up to the define stage, which is the second stage in design thinking. This article will be useful to students working on a design project for their school assignment or even to an industry with a tight time developing a product.
