Evaluation of Virtual Reality Cultural Heritage Experience at Guilin Museum, China: A Conceptual Paper

    No full text
Integrating Virtual Reality (VR) technology into cultural heritage presents unprecedented opportunities for enhancing museum experiences, specifically through immersive and interactive digital presentations (Theodoropoulos & Antoniou, 2022). Although virtual reality technology has the potential to enhance the experience of cultural heritage, according to previous research, it is not difficult to find that existing museum VR applications often lack an immersive experience, and many experiencers' immersion is interrupted during the experience, highlighting the urgent need for a VR application evaluation framework. In addition, most of the research is from the technology perspective, ignoring the users' experience needs. Therefore, the purpose of this conceptual paper is to present a conceptual framework that theoretically justifies the creation of a virtual reality evaluation. This conceptual paper begins by reviewing relevant research on VR in the cultural heritage field and methods and scales for measuring immersion. It suggests the possibility of utilizing grounded theory to uncover potential factors. Subsequently, this conceptual paper summarizes previous research and theoretical gaps. A conceptual framework for establishing a robust evaluation of virtual reality applications is proposed as a two-stage mixed research method (Exploratory Sequential Mixed Method Design) (Berman, 2017). This concept paper illustrates the details and rationalization of the conceptual framework so that it can be further investigated theoretically or empirically in the future. This concept paper contributes to developing an evaluation of VR cultural heritage applications. At the same time, it theoretically enhances the understanding of digital presentation and preservation of cultural heritage

Addressing English Grammar Learning Challenges Among Malaysian Islamic Studies Students

    No full text
Previous studies have reported that students with Islamic studies backgrounds in Malaysia often exhibit low performance in the English language, which is associated with negative attitudes and low motivation to learn the language. Many of these students question the need to learn the language, making it essential to investigate whether this issue persists in the current era. Therefore, the present study aims to study the problems that these students face in learning English grammar and how it influences their language learning at the tertiary level. A questionnaire was specifically designed and distributed to 61 students from the Faculty of Islamic Studies of a public university in Malaysia before transferring the data into Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPPS) for analysis. The results from the questionnaire reveal that even at the tertiary level, students still struggle with learning English. They felt that learning English was difficult as they could not find similarities between English and any other languages they knew. Moreover, their negative perception of the language hindered them from putting effort into improving their proficiency. Hence, it is recommended for a specific module to be designed for this group that can cater to their needs towards learning English grammar efficiently, with the hope that it will also positively change their perception of the language

    No full text
ABSTRACT This study employs cultural graphics to close the gaps in cultural and social identity in Qinzhou City, China, to enhance the urban spatial perception. To analyze existing studies and identify unexplored areas, the Critical Literature Review was performed on cultural graphics that fostered emotional and symbolic connections. The study develops 'cultural graphic resonance', a concept based on the Semiotic, Social Identity, and Cultural Identity theories of the emotional and symbolic effects of cultural symbols on urban identity and cohesion. The findings advance a mix of traditional elements, such as Nixing pottery and Lingnan motifs, with modern images to create a unified urban identity. It offers actionable strategies to bridge cultural identity divides and to improve the urban spatial perception. Finally, policy and design recommendations for culturally diverse cities like Qinzhou are given as a basis for future empirical research on the role of cultural graphics in urban planning and community cohesion

    No full text
The production of meat without involving conventional livestock, known as cultivated meat, is one of the latest innovations in the field of food biotechnology. Cultivated meat is produced in laboratories through the cultivation of stem cells. However, cultivated meat raises several issues, such as the absence of halal guidelines and safety standards provided by the Food Safety and Quality Division (FSQD), Department of Veterinary Services Malaysia (DVS), and Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM). This article aims to identify potential hazards at Halal Control Points (HCPs) in the cultivated meat production and analyse strategies for managing these hazards within a halal risk management framework. To achieve these objectives, an exploratory research design, also referred as formative research, was employed. Interviews were conducted with subject matter experts in cultivated meat field, including academics, regulatory authorities, and start-up companies. The collected data were analysed using thematic analysis. The potential hazards and strategies for managing the risks can serve as a reference not only for the industry but also for regulatory authorities in monitoring the safety and halal aspects of cultivated meat production. Halal compliance in cultivated meat production has the potential to ensure the halal integrity and safety of cultivated meat, making it reliable, consistent, and trustworthy not only at the local but also capable of penetrating global markets

    No full text
The development of information technology requires that teachers' educational technology ability should be increased. In the field of education, TPACK has become an important framework for measuring teachers' educational technology competence, and novice English teachers, as the main force of future English teachers, directly influence the quality of English informatics teaching. However, the current reality is that teachers lack technological literacy and many of them have a vague understanding of the integration of technology and education. The primary objectives of this study are to investigate the current TPACK status of both novice and experienced college EFL teachers, TPACK levels between novice and experienced teachers in seven dimensions. The study analyses the reasons for the differences of TPACK levels between the two groups of teachers. The mixed research method was applied in this study. From the quantitative data result, we cannot find there is significant difference in TPACK level between novice teachers and experienced teachers. Upon the qualitative data analysis, the study provides practical suggestions for enhancing the TPACK development of college EFL teachers, ultimately contributing to their professional growth and the effective integration of technology in language education in China

Environmental Implications of Breastfeeding and Its Role in Attaining the United Nations SDGs

    No full text
Breastfeeding is widely recognized for its numerous health benefits for both infants and mothers. Remarkably, increasing breastfeeding to a universal level could potentially save up to 823,000 infant lives and prevent breast cancer in approximately 20,000 mothers each year. However, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) did not specifically highlight breastfeeding as a target. More specifically, its potential role in promoting environmental sustainability has been largely overlooked. This paper aims to delve into the environmental impact of breastfeeding and its contribution towards achieving the SDGs. It will bring to light the often-ignored links between breastfeeding and environmental impact. In situations where breastfeeding is not prevalent, infant formula serves as a replacement. However, the production, packaging, distribution, and consumption of these substitutes pose various environmental challenges. Additionally, the challenges in strengthening the implementation of the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and the need for global funding to promote breastfeeding practices are discussed as well. In a nutshell, joint effort and the strong role of government intervention in achieving the Global Breastfeeding Collective's target of a 70% exclusive breastfeeding rate by 2023, could impose a significant contribution into a broader sustainable development agenda
