Chinese and Western Aesthetic Realization in Traditional Chinese Instrumental Performance: Perspectives of Scholars and Students
Chinese and Western music aesthetics arise from two different cultural backgrounds. While previous research has explored the evolution and interaction of Chinese and Western aesthetics, their specific impact on Traditional Chinese Instrumental Performance (TCIP) has been overlooked. This study investigates the intersection of Chinese and Western music aesthetics in TCIP, focusing on the perspectives of music scholars and students. To address this gap, the study employed narrative inquiry with music scholars (n=4) and semi-structured interviews with music major students (n=8). It explores how Confucianism and Taoism aesthetics, alongside Western concepts of autonomy and heteronomy, influence music scholars’ and students’ perspectives and practices in TCIP. The findings reveal that these aesthetic principles shape musicians’ artistic choices and interpretations. This research highlights the importance of integrating aesthetic thoughts into TCIP, offering insights for fostering Chinese and Western aesthetic appreciation and understanding of TCIP. These explorations extend to enhancing educational practices and promoting a more comprehensive interpretation of music aesthetics in both scholarly and performance contexts
Disciplinary Dynamics: A Comparative Study of Move Structures in Research Discussions
This study investigates the move structures employed in the research discussions of articles across academic disciplines, particularly science and non-science, focusing on the dynamics that shape disciplinary conventions. Based on a comparative analysis of selected articles from two distinct fields, this study aims to uncover how researchers in these fields discuss their research results, such as by articulating their findings, engaging with existing literature, and constructing arguments within their respective contexts. Through a qualitative content analysis approach, prevalent move structures were identified in the corpora, revealing both similarities and differences in the rhetorical strategies involved. Preliminary findings indicate that while certain move structures are universally recognised, each discipline exhibited unique patterns influenced by its academic conventions and discourse communities. These insights not only enhance our understanding of academic discourse but also highlight the importance of context in shaping research communication. The current findings essentially add to the growing body of knowledge on academic and research genre by providing a nuanced perspective on how move structures function as tools for the dissemination of knowledge. The implications extend to educators and researchers alike, offering guidance on effective writing practices that resonate with disciplinary norms. Ultimately, this comparative analysis fosters greater awareness of the complexities involved in research discussions, encouraging more effective and diverse cross-disciplinary research in the future
Exploring Reasons for Learning English and Burnout Among Pre-University Students
English is crucial to achieve academic success and fulfil social needs of the language in today’s society. Several studies have reported that the reasons for learning English could facilitate learners to learn the language more seriously with the aim to be proficient and successful in acquiring the language. However, the reasons for learning the English language may be a factor that could lead to academic burnout. Therefore, this study explored the reasons for learning English and burnout among pre-university students. A quantitative approach was done to investigate reasons for learning English and its relation to students’ burnout. The survey used was derived from Pintrich and De Groot’s (1990) reasons for learning and Campos et al.’s (2011) causes of burnout. A purposive sample of 271 UiTM Centre of Foundation Studies students responded to the survey. The findings of this study revealed the affective component was the most significant cause of academic burnout due to maladaptive perfectionism whereby learners were concerned about making mistakes especially when they focused on learning English to excel in tests and examinations. Conclusively, the relationship between the reasons for learning English language and cause of burnout has prominent implications for academic institutions and educators to foster a positive and successful learning environment by providing resources and assistance programmes for students to manage academic difficulties and social stresses in English language learning
The Impacts of Undi 18 on Political Participation, Awareness and Readiness
The implementation of Undi18 on December 15, 2021, added an estimated 5.8 million new voters aged 18 and older to Malaysia's political landscape. While some see this as a timely move to introduce young people to civic responsibility and encourage active participation, others argue that 18-year-olds are too immature and have low awareness with only 29.03% of the youth participating in the political socialization domain. Consequently, it is crucial to assess the level of awareness and readiness among young people and their readiness to actively engage as voters. This study aimed to assess the level of youth awareness and readiness towards Undi18, examine the extent of their political participation, and analyse factors influencing their awareness and readiness. The study was conducted in Kuching, Sarikei, and Sri Aman, with 585 first-time voters aged 18 to 20 years surveyed via a questionnaire and 30 respondents in focus group discussions. The study found that parental involvement, political experience, social media exposure, educational exposure, and perception of and relationships with politicians were the five main factors influencing youth political participation and awareness and readiness towards Undi18. Geographical factors did not affect the level of awareness and readiness regarding Undi18. Despite the majority of respondents being aware of Undi18 and ready to participate as voters, a significant number were not prepared for higher forms of political participation
Exploring The Intention of Using Mobile Learning in Flipped Classroom Approach for Arts and Design Students
The flipped classroom is a pedagogical approach that encourages active learning experience activities in the classroom. The students will receive information and materials before class learning using mobile technology both inside and outside of the classroom to allow for more dynamic, interactive, and advanced learning activities that involve the application of knowledge with higher-order thinking. Studies have shown, students who use the Mobile learning or M-learning platform in a flipped learning method can provide an interactive, engaging, and cost-effective way for graduates to broaden their employability skills. Although research on mobile learning in the flipped classroom approach has been extensive, research on M-learning has been limited. The study's objective is to examine the effectiveness of mobile learning adoption in relation to students' perceptions and responses under the UTAUT2 (unified theory of acceptance and use of technology) model in the undergraduate arts and design students and to review the pilot study model in development for larger-scale future research. Through a quantitative research approach, the pilot study used questionnaires to gather data from 50 undergraduate arts and design in multimedia design programme students of first-year from a local higher education institution. The findings showed that every composite reliability value in this study exceeded the 0.70 threshold value, indicating strong indicator reliability of the factors. Moreover, flipped classrooms increase student involvement, learning motivation, achievements and both at the same time improving educators' knowledge of how to use the flipped learning model in ways that are most advantageous for their own students

Differentiated Instruction: A Survey of Novice Teachers’ Understanding and Barrier to Implementation
Gifted and talented students have different interests and preferred learning styles. Scholarly investigations have demonstrated that teaching gifted and talented students must address their needs as well as nurture their talents. Meeting the needs of gifted students in diverse classrooms has become a major problem for teachers. Differentiated instruction is one of the methods of instruction used with gifted children in programs. The idea that coping with all students equally is no longer effective, especially among gifted students. This emphasizes the importance of suitable teaching approaches, which include differentiated instruction (DI) as a fundamental solution, although challenging. Thus, this research aims to evaluate the level of understanding and the barriers faced by novice teachers in the implementation of differentiated instruction. This study was conducted at a boarding school located in Malaysia. The data were collected using a quantitative approach. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software. The research revealed that novice teachers generally have knowledge and implement differentiated instruction during class. However, the amount of time taken for preparation becomes the major barrier to the implementation of differentiated instruction. The study also highlighted the need for professional development courses to support the implementation of differentiated instruction for gifted students
Exploring the Connection Between Attitudes Towards New Chinglish and Social Media Among Chinese College Students
New Chinglish has emerged as an undeniable and popular trend on Chinese social media platforms, particularly among Chinese college students. These college students are not only the main force of English users and learners in China but also the major netizens on Chinese social media platforms. However, within a cultural context where ‘standards and adherence to norms have traditionally been of paramount importance to the Chinese’ (Kirkpatrick, 2017: 278), the conflicting attitudes and use towards either upholding traditional viewpoints or adopting opposing stances regarding the New Chinglish warrant intriguing and meaningful exploration. Thus, this study aims to explore the connection between their attitudes towards New Chinglish and its usage behaviors on social media among Chinese college students. It seeks to unveil the reasons underlying their attitudes towards the use of New Chinglish. The in-depth exploration reveals a contradictory and uncertain evaluation of their usage of New Chinglish on social media, despite its high level of understandability and acceptability among them. Personal acceptability and preference do not solely determine their attitudes towards their use of New Chinglish on social media; instead, various social factors, such as language inequality, influence their language use behavior and attitudes, leading to a compromise between individual preferences and social influences. Specifically, this study offers insight into the genuine reactions and usage tendencies of English in real-life situations, indicating the future trends in English language development in China
