ESL Novice Teachers' Beliefs and Practices on The Teaching of Reading Strategies

    No full text
In recent years, research has progressively accentuated teachers' beliefs and practices of reading strategies as the emphasis has shifted away from observing the reading result to the reading process. However, little has been done in Malaysia, specifically among novice teachers, to explore how they perceive and practice reading strategies, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research was conducted to investigate ESL novice teachers' beliefs and practices in teaching reading strategies in an ESL classroom. In this qualitative study, four national secondary school ESL teachers were selected as they shared their beliefs, and actual classroom practices of reading strategies during the period of hybrid learning were conducted. The data were obtained through two online semi-structured interview sessions, a collection of documents and digital materials. The findings indicated that participants show a positive stance on teaching reading strategies by highlighting its functionality in developing essential reading skills such as enhancing vocabulary learning, facilitating understanding of the whole text and a few others. Additionally, the results revealed the teachers' classroom practices of reading strategies during the three stages of reading. The outcomes indicated that teachers' beliefs are aligned with their classroom practices though some adjustments had to be made primarily when classes were conducted remotely. Overall, the current study has further proven the continuous need for reading strategies instruction from the perspectives of novice teachers; hence, it is hoped to be beneficial for future teachers and researchers and, most notably, will help contribute to the ESL teaching methodology in general

sharing behavior among academicians in public universities. Trust is recognized as a fundamental element underpinning effective knowledge sharing in organizations, crucial for skill development, enhancing competencies, and sustaining competitive advantages. In academic settings, knowledge dissemination occurs through various channels such as teaching, publications, training, and research. Despite the assumption that academicians are actively engaged in knowledge creation and sharing, real-world practices may not always reflect this. This paper reviews existing literature to elucidate how trust impacts knowledge-sharing behavior among academicians, with a focus on Malaysian public universities. The findings aim to offer insights into the dynamics of trust in knowledge sharing and propose strategies to foster a knowledge-sharing culture in academia

    No full text
Following years of study at university, students in their final year embark on an internship program to gain experience and to apply their knowledge and skills. When COVID-19 first struck, it changed the education landscape, including the implementation of the internship program. Some students did their internships from home while others participated in hybrid internships which might have impacted their oral communication skills. Therefore, this study aims to determine the student’s perceptions of oral communication skills during the internship programs and identify the various oral communication skills required at the workplace during COVID-19. The study employed a mixed-method approach, incorporating both interviews and surveys in collecting the data. The results of this study reveal that students perceived effective oral communication with colleagues as crucial, as poor communication not only affects interactions but also impedes productivity in the workplace. Additionally, interns were anticipated to proficiently engage in numerous professional interactions with colleagues, superiors, and clients, demonstrating practiced and essential oral communication skills in the workplace. Hence, universities should provide courses or activities aimed at fostering skills pertinent to work settings and preparing students for internship programs. The study provides valuable insights into students' perceptions of oral communication skills needed during an internship program and the essential communication skills sought by employers for internship programs

    No full text
Student’s self-efficacy and online learning is believed to reflect the confidence to master the learning of science. Proportional stratified random sampling technique was applied to 300 respondents. Quantitative survey was conducted through data collection using a set of 57-item research questions and a 30-item Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) science test. The data was analysed using a statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 26.0. The value of alpha Cronbach reliability in online learning research questions a=0.890, self-efficacy a=0.917, and science achievement test a=0.774. Stepwise multiple regression test results indicated that online learning and student’s self-efficacy contributed 14 percent of the student science achievement, [F (2,297) = 24.246, p<.05]. The regression coefficient showed that both the variables of online learning (β=0.343), and self-efficacy (β=0.315), made a positive contribution to the science achievement of Form Four students. These findings explain that students who are at a high level of online learning and have a high level of self-efficacy also have a higher level of science achievement. It is found in this study that the main predictors of student science achievement are online learning followed by self-efficacy

    No full text
Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLSs) are widely implemented in the learning of English as a second language (ESL). Hence, VLSs are helpful in aiding learners to develop their vocabulary effectively, not only in the classroom but also out-of-classroom, according to the learners' needs. This study aims to investigate the use of vocabulary learning strategies in incidental learning among high and low proficiency Year 6 ESL learners. The sample of this study are 30 Year 6 ESL learners from a primary government school in Bandar Baru Bangi. A mixed method was employed, and purposive sampling was used for this study. Data was collected through a 26-item questionnaire based on Schmitt’s Taxonomy of Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire (VLSQ) and semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that high proficiency learners “watch English media” the most and the “use of flashcards” as the least favoured. In contrast, low proficiency learners prefer “asking parents or family members for the meaning of words” and “reading English newspaper, magazines and books” the least. Although no significant differences were found in overall strategy use between high and low proficiency groups, metacognitive strategies were employed significantly more by high proficiency learners. Both high and low proficiency Year 6 ESL learners also perceive technology tools and multimedia as effective for incidental learning by using YouTube, social media platform, online games, use of sub-titles and digital dictionaries. Further research on a larger scale among primary school learners is recommended to inform teachers about the application of vocabulary learning strategies, particularly in incidental learning

Ex Post Facto Prosecution of International Crimes in the Bangladesh War Crimes Tribunal: An Issue of Constitutionality

    No full text
Bangladesh War Crimes Tribunal-a domestic criminal court is currently prosecuting the offenders of atrocious crimes perpetrated in the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971. Though the atrocious offenses took place in 1971, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Act 1973 was decreed by Bangladeshi Parliament in 1973, and the Tribunal was established in 2010; hence the ICT Act 1973 is considered as an ex post facto (retrospective) legislation because it has been promulgated after the commission of the crimes. Therefore, this study first analyzes the importance of ex post facto law’s prohibition in customary international law. Secondly, the study highlights how the 1973 ICT Act applies to prosecute the ICTB’s defendants retrospectively by amending the constitution of Bangladesh. Thirdly, it examines the ex post facto legislation’s application in the Bangladesh Tribunal and the issue of constitutionality because rules on the prohibition of retrospective legislation is one of the fundamental rights of every citizen that need to be safeguarded by every constitution of civilized nations. Lastly, this study's originality proves that ex post facto law’s application in the ICTB is unconstitutional. Then, this research paper concludes by inferring that the government of Bangladesh needs to amend the constitution to prohibit the ex post facto law’s implementation through the Tribunal that will enhance the legal acceptability of the War Crimes Court because the recent Criminal Court in question is operating under the Bangladeshi government.  &nbsp

A comprehensive model has been developed to evaluate the usage and outcomes of cross-border e-commerce (CBEC) at firm level. The model is built on the TOE framework, and we have focused on the post-adoption phase, which involves the actual usage of e-commerce and its potential to generate value, rather than just the adoption aspect that is typically the focus of previous literature. The aim of this research is to investigate determinants of e-commerce usage among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Hebei Province. The main focus is to conduct preliminary analysis and reliability and validity testing on data of the pilot study. This is necessary to receive valuable feedback from the participants and ensure the final survey's reliability and validity. A pilot survey is conducted in SMEs of Hebei Province using purposive sampling to analyse reliability and validity. In the pilot study, we conducted a survey of 50 SMEs in Hebei Province, and the reliability and validity of our findings were confirmed, and the result provided a context to undertake the analysis of data. The research provides SME employees, managers, governments, and researchers in Hebei Province with a reference for formulating strategies that suit the business model of CBEC SMEs in the province and helps firms make good use of e-commerce to increase international competitiveness
