Who is Doing the Housework in Chinese Families in Malaysia?

    No full text
There are limited studies focusing on the amount of time spent on housework and the predictors that influence men’s share of weekly housework time relative to their spouses in Chinese families in Malaysia. Quantitative empirical data on the housework time shouldered by couples in Chinese families and the predictors that influence men’s share of weekly housework time relative to their spouses in Chinese families have not been possible due to the lack of a time use survey and no available data in Malaysia. This study adopts a quantitative approach to examine the amount of time spent on housework in Chinese families in Malaysia. Also, it examines the predictors that influence men’s share of weekly housework time relative to their spouses in the Chinese families. Using an online survey (n = 283 female respondents), the findings indicated that housework was shouldered by Chinese women rather than men, with women spending approximately 5 hours and 13 minutes per week more than men in Chinese families. The findings suggest that men shared less than half of the housework tasks at home with their spouses. In addition, the findings suggest that men increased their share of housework tasks when their spouses earned more than them. This implies that negotiation occurs within Chinese couples with women using their earnings to bargain out of housework. In sum, the findings revealed that although Chinese wives shouldered most of the housework tasks, they could bargain out from the housework and do less housework if they earned more than their husbands

Reliability and Validity of An Instrument Modified Based on The TAM for Piano Learning

    No full text
This study aims to modify and assess the validity and reliability of an instrument designed to measure middle school students' perceptions of using a short video platform as an aid in piano learning. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was chosen as the theoretical framework because it is a well-established model for assessing user acceptance of technology. The absence of instruments for assessing TAM-based attitudes limits a comprehensive understanding of students' acceptance and the effectiveness of these platforms. The instrument of the current study is based on the modified model by Lee et al. (2009) following the Learners' Acceptance of E-learning framework. Models of self-directed learning and perceived satisfaction are incorporated into the original framework (service quality constructs, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intent to use). The instrument was distributed to 100 students and 95 valid responses were returned. Instrument content was modified from the four established instruments from past studies and exploratory factor analysis was used to determine the construct validity. The reliability of each construct was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha, and the internal consistency of individual items within each construct was assessed using Corrected Item-Total Correlation (CITC). The findings indicate that the Cronbach's alpha values for all constructs were between 0.812 and 0.9, which ensures their internal reliability. Ultimately, 33 out of 36 items are retained. The results indicate that the instrument is valid and reliable

    No full text
Online marketing plays a crucial role in worldwide branding. This writing aims to explore and determine how social and cultural dimensions affect customer engagement (CE) in online brand design in an intercultural setting and, in turn, affect brand loyalty and brand equity, further advancing the theory development of intercultural marketing in brand design and brand management. While intercultural branding activities increase, major problems around negative online engagement, digital inequality, miscommunication across cultures, and ethnocentric perspectives remain. These highlight the need to improve intercultural competence, sensitivity, and communication to enhance mutually beneficial CE in the digital era. Not only do successful online marketing strategies effectively utilize social media platforms and digital technologies, but they also understand how social and cultural dimensions influence brand design and customer engagement, particularly across cultures. Darla Deardorff’s intercultural competence model (ICM) provides a basic framework to promote in a multicultural setting; further, the expected outcomes suggest that the mediating effects of branded content experience, cultural and contextual factors, and the moderating influence of digital literacy are statistically significant. This conceptual framework can permit brands and marketers to improve CE and guide their management of assets and marketing activities through brand design; additionally, this writing provides novel perspectives on the relevance and significance of social and cultural dimensions in brand design

Perceptions and Teaching Practice on Musical Imagery Training among Chinese Piano Teachers

    No full text
This study investigates the perceptions and teaching experiences of Chinese piano teachers regarding the integration of musical imagery training in piano teaching. Through a qualitative research design and purposive sampling, twelve piano teachers participated semi-structured interviews and class observations. Subsequently, three participants implemented the most musical imagery training strategies were invited in the second round of interviews and observations. Eight strategies related to musical imagery training were identified, categorized into notational audiation, inner ear, and mental rehearsal. The implementation process involved three key steps: thinking, communication, and experience, Notably, a multi-strategy combined approach was favored. The four strategies—breaking down music, listening to recordings, performing with eyes closed, and visualizing successful performances—were frequently applied. However, this study revealed participants’ limited familiarity with musical imagery training, leading to sporadic incorporation into teaching practices. It emphasizes the need to enhance teachers' comprehension of musical imagery for effective integration into piano pedagogy

Leadership for Technology Integration in Teaching Mathematics: A Comparative Study Between Two Private Institutions

    No full text
The calling for technology integration in teaching mathematics has become louder as mathematics enables advanced understanding of concepts in other STEM subjects. However, technology integration in teaching mathematics has posed challenges for curriculum leaders and teachers. Hence, this study intended to investigate the curriculum change process involving technology integration from the principals' perspectives and their leadership approach to effective curriculum change management. The study adopted a qualitative research method. Data were collected via email interviews with two principals managing private institutions that offer the same math program for primary school students. The findings showed that Rogers’ diffusion of innovation model supported the curriculum change process involving technology adoption in teaching mathematics. In addition, the principals were found to have distinct perspectives on curriculum change implementation and, hence, had adopted different leadership approaches in managing curriculum change. The findings of this study imply that future leadership development programs should focus on developing transformational leadership qualities that enhance curriculum change processes

Understanding Acculturation Strategies Through Intergroup Social Interaction: A Case Study of Thai Workers in Japan

    No full text
Most studies of Thai workers in Japan are oriented towards low-skilled groups of workers. Unlike low-skilled workers, highly skilled migrant workers experience intense social interaction with Japanese colleagues, resulting in dynamics and degrees of intergroup relationships and acculturation process. This article therefore identifies acculturation strategies dominant among highly skilled Thai workers in Japanese working societies through the lens of intergroup contacts. It also explores the intergroup social interactions between Thai and Japanese people in workplaces and uncovers the effects of intergroup contact on the acculturation process. Narratives from interviews with 12 highly skilled Thai workers led to three findings. First, integration is predominantly identified as the most advantageous acculturation strategy. Second, positive intergroup social contact prevails on the condition that Thai workers strictly follow the norms and values in the workplaces, particularly behaviors which demonstrate a sense of selflessness. Finally, positive social contact between highly skilled Thai workers and Japanese people facilitates the integration process of highly skilled Thai workers. Based on the findings, some implications are discussed.&nbsp

A Literature Review on the Identity Construction of the Simulacra Subject in Jean Genet’s The Balcony

    No full text
Jean Genet's The Balcony explores the fundamental elements of subject identity construction and identification within a framework of double paradoxes. The reconfigurations of simulacra activities challenge the traditional political model of theater, redefining the nature and expression of the subject's identity and endowing theatrical representation with political potential. The subject of simulacra exists in a constant state of internal and external constitutive difference, emphasizing the essential incompleteness and antagonistic dimension of identity construction, which resonates with the political realm. The dual nature of the other renders the construction of the subject's identity an insurmountable task, while the perpetual opposition of the dual relationship converges into tertiary natures, exposing the failure point of impossibility and necessity in subject identity construction. The trinity mode of the subject continually replaces power relationships through negation, engendering space for reflection. This paper employs Deleuze's theory of in-itself difference and Mouffe and Laclau's theory of antagonism and hegemony to analyze the foundational structural strategy of subject identity construction and identification in The Balcony. It elucidates how this strategy establishes the necessary conditions for the autonomy of politics within Genet Theatre
