    Probiotics in oral health – A new tool in pharmaceutical science

    Probiotics are dietary supplements containing potentially beneficial bacteria or yeasts. They are administered in different quantities that allow for colon colonization. These products help in stimulating health by promoting flora and also suppressing the pathologic colonization and disease spread. Initially, probiotics were used for the management of intestinal tract problems. But, nowadays its use has been proved in strengthening the immune system to combat allergies, stress, exposure to toxic substances and other diseases. There are few studies that reported anticariogenic effects of probiotics and their use in the treatment of periodontal disease and halitosis. However, data is still sparse on the action and role of probiotics in the oral cavity. More information is needed on the colonization of probiotics in the mouth and their possible effect on and within oral biofilm. The present review tries to briefly outline the potential role of probiotics in improving oral and dental health

    The Jodhpur district a part of Thar Desert is very rich in medicinal plant wealth. The medicinal plants of this region have great potential to be used in drug and pharmaceutical industries. These herbal plants have been used by local people, tribal communities, vendors, native doctors such as Ojhas, Bhagats Bhopas and experts of Ayurvedic fields since long time in herbal and folk remedies. Kalbelia, Nats, Bhils, Raika, Bhopas, Banjara, Gadolia-Lohar, Saharia and Meena communities of this district have a rich knowledge of plants based traditional medicines. Ten ethnomedicinal plants like Cleome gynandra Linn., Clerodendrum phlomidis Linn., Cassia angustifolia Vahl., Echinops echinatus Roxb., Leucas aspera (Willd.) Spreng., Mimosa hamata Willd., Moringa oleifera Lamk., Pedalium murex Linn., Peganum harmala Linn., Sida cordifolia Linn. have been selected for this research work.     Comparison Between Pap Smear and Via As Screening For Cervical Lesions

    Introduction: An important reason for higher cervical cancer incidence in developing countries is lack of effective screening programs like pap smear, aimed at detecting precancerous conditions before they progress to invasive cancer. The potential difficulties in implementing cervical cytology based screening in low-resource settings have prompted the investigation of accuracy of alternative low technology tests such as Visual inspection with acetic acid application [VIA], Visual inspection with acetic acid application with magnification [VIAM], visual inspection on Lugol’s Iodine application [VILI] in early detection of cervical neoplasia .In our study we compared pap smear with VIA to study the accurarcy of VIA as it is simpler and easier technique to be used as screening in low resource settings. Aim: This is a hospital based descriptive, prospective study to evaluate validity of pap smear and VIA techniques as screening tests in identifying cervical lesions. Materials And Methods: After general and systemic examination as a routine,visual local pelvic examination including visualisation of cervix and vagina per speculum and the findings are documented in the proforma .Then VIA and pap smear are done in that order, if any of these tests are positive then cervical biopsy will be taken and further advise to the subject is given. Results: A total of 313 women were involved in the study. The sensitivity of pap smear is 54.5% specificity is 98.9% while that of VIA 95.4% and 97.9%respectively. We found that VIA accuracy was comparatively more than that of pap smear. Conclusion: In low resource settings, usefulness of VIA is more than that of pap smear. We suggest to perform VIA in all the women inspite of having pap smear facility to improve detection rate of cervical lesions and provide better patient councelling and treatment

    Fast disintegrating tablets (FDTs) have received increasing demand from the last few years and the field has become a rapidly growing field in the pharmaceutical industry. Fast disintegrating tablets (FDTs) are those solid doses form which when put on the tongue gets rapidly dissolved, releasing the drug within a few second without need of water. The development of FDTs have been formulated for paediatric, geriatric and bedridden patients and for active patients who are busy and travelling and may not have access to water. Such formulation provide an opportunity for product line extension in the many elderly persons will have difficulties in taking conventional oral doses forms (viz, solution suspensions tablet and capsules) because of hand tremors and dysphagia.     Allium Cepa Root Chromosomal Aberration Assay: A Review

    Higher plants, an important material for genetic tests to monitor various pollutant present in the environment. Among the plant species, Alium cepa has been used to evaluate chromosome aberrations and disturbances in the mitotic cycle. Now days, it has been used to assess a great number of genotoxic/antigenotoxic agents, which contributes to its increasing application in environmental monitoring. The A. cepa is commonly used as a test organism because it is cheap, easily available and handled and has advantages over other short-term tests. Among the endpoints of A. cepa root chromosomal aberrations, detection of chromosomal aberration have been the most used one to detect genotoxicity/ antigenotoxicity along the years. The mitotic index and chromosomal abnormalities are used to evaluate genotoxicity and micronucleus analysis used to verify mutagenicity of different chemicals.     Timed Release of Valsartan from Programmable Release Capsules: Importance of Plasticizers

    The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different plasticizers on the ethylcellulose coatings of capsules and its timed release characteristics. Various plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate (DBP), triacetin (TA), glycerol, triethyl citrate (TEC), polyethylene glycol-4000 and polyethylene glycol-6000 (PEG) were studied. The physicochemical properties of the casted polymeric films such as mechanical resistance, water uptake and dry weight loss were determined. Also the type and concentration of plasticizer on timed release of the capsule was studied. The drug release was found to be strongly dependent on the type of plasticizer and was in the order of GY>TA>PEG 6000>PEG 4000>TEC>DBP. Capsules coated with hydrophobic DBP (5%) showed good release with a lag time of 6 ± 0.5 h. DBP provided mechanically resistant coatings on the capsule and remained within the polymeric films without leaching upon exposure to the release media which helped in maintaining the lag time
