Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn (Nymphaeaceae), a perennial aquatic plant, has been used as a medicinal herb in China and India. It has been recorded in the most famous medicinal book in China for more than 400 years. Different part of plant (leaves, seeds, flower, and rhizome) can be used in traditional system of medicine. In traditional system of medicine, the different parts of plant is reported to possess beneficial effects as in for the treatment of pharyngopathy, pectoralgia, spermatorrhoea, leucoderma, smallpox, dysentery, cough, haematemesis, epistaxis, haemoptysis, haematuria, metrorrhagia, hyperlipidaemia, fever, cholera, hepatopathy and hyperdipsia. Following the traditional claims for the use of N.nucifera as cure of numerous diseases considerable efforts have been made by researchers to verify it’s utility through scientific pharmacological screenings. The pharmacological studies have shown that N.nucifera posseses various notable pharmacological activities like amti-ischemic, antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral, antiobesity, lipolytic, hypocholestemic, antipyretic, hepatoprotective, hypoglycaemic, antidiarrhoeal, antifungal, antibacterial, antiinflammatory and diuretic activities. A wide variety of phytoprinciples have been isolated from the plant. The present review is an effort to consolidate traditional, ethnobotanic, phytochemical and pharmacological information available on N.nucifera
Status of Herbal Drugs in Cardiovascular Research: A Review
Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) constitute a leading cause of mortality. Heart disease in India occurs 10 to 15 years earlier than in the west. One fifth of the deaths in India are from coronary heart disease (CHD). The global burden of disease due to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is escalating, principally due to a sharp rise in the developing countries which are experiencing rapid health transition. More than 2000 plants have been listed in the Traditional (Herbal/Alternative) systems of medicine and some of these are providing comprehensive relief to the people suffering from cardiovascular diseases, specially “hyperlipidemia” and “ischemic heart disease”. WHO reports indicate that around eighty percent of the global population still relies on botanical drugs and several herbal medicines have advanced to clinical use in modern times. This review work explains chemical and pharmacological status of various cardioprotective plants including phytoconstituents responsible for cardioprotection, pharmacological screening model and mechanism involved in cardioprotection
Phytochemical Properties and Pharmcological Activities of Nicotiana Tabacum: A Review
Computational methods play a central role in modern drug discovery process. It includes the design and management of small molecule libraries, initial hit identification through virtual screening, optimization of the affinity as well as selectivity of hits and improving the physicochemical properties of the lead compounds. In this review article, computational drug designing approaches have been elucidated and discussed. The key considerations and guidelines for virtual chemical library design and whole drug discovery process. Traditional approach for discovery of a new drug is a costly and time consuming affair besides not being so productive. A number of potential reasons witness choosing the In-silico method of drug design to be a more wise and productive approach. There is a general perception that applied science has not kept pace with the advances of basic science. Therefore, there is a need for the use of alternative tools to get answers on efficacy and safety faster, with more certainty and at lower cost. In-silico drug design can play a significant role in all stages of drug development from the initial lead designing to final stage clinical development
Synthesis, characterization and antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles by Morus nigra leaf extract
The present study reports the synthesis of silver nanoparticle using Morus nigra leaf extract were used as reducing agent for reduction of silver nitrate solution. The synthesis of silver nanoparticles was analyzed by UV-Visible spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy. The SEM analysis has shown that size of silver nanoparticles synthesized from leaves extract of M.nigra was 200 nm and seems to be spherical in morphology. Morphology of chemically synthesized silver nanoparticles is nearly spherical and of size ranges from 300-500 nm. The average particle size analyzed from SEM analysis was observed to be 350 nm. This article has discussed the synthesis of silver nanoparticles generated from plant extract, characterization and antibacterial analysis. In this study the antibacterial activity was examined against six MTCC cultures collected from IMTECH Chandigarh, Including both gram positive and gram negative bacteria such as P.aeruginosa, S.aureus, B.subtilis, E.coli, P.flourescens and Streptococus mutans. Out of these strains the antimicrobial activity of the silver nanoparticles showed maximum zone of inbhition against P.flourescens (22 mm), P.aeruginosa (19 mm), S.aureus (18 mm) and least effective against E.coli (15mm). In contrast chemically synthesized silver nanoparticles were found most effective against S.aureus (13 mm) and B.subtilis (12mm) and almost ineffective against Streptococcus mutans (6 mm) and P.flourescens (4 mm). In the concluding remarks, the silver nanoparticles synthesized using M.nigra leaves extract would be a better antimicrobial effective against various bacterial species
Antimicrobial activity and Characterization of Marine bacteria
Marine bacteria were isolated from seawater was collected from different coastal areas of the Tamilnadu Sea. The antimicrobial activities of these bacteria were investigated. Ethyl acetate extracts of marine bacterial fermentation were screened for antimicrobial activities using the method of agar diffusion. The results showed that 25 strains of the isolates have antimicrobial activity. The proportion of active bacteria associated with isolated from seawater. The active marine bacteria were assigned to the genera Alteromonas, Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Marinobacter. The TLC autobiographic overlay assay implied that the antimicrobial metabolites produced by four strains with wide antimicrobial spectrum were different. These marine bacteria were expected to be potential resources of natural antibiotic products. It can be concluded that isolation of Marine bacterial samples can offer a numbers of microbial strains for sources of new biomolecules from Marine sources
Atypical presentations of congenital cutaneous candidiasis- presenting a cohort of 8 cases
Congenital cutaneous candidiasis is an extremely rare disorder that usually presents within the first 6 days of life. We report 8 neonates who presented with generalized skin eruptions within first 6 days of life, characterized by erythematous macules, papules, vesicles, bullae and pustules. Candida albicans was demonstrated on direct KOH smear, fungal culture and skin biopsy. The disease implies a congenital intrauterine infection and is different from neonatal candidiasis, which manifests as thrush or diaper dermatitis.Although congenital cutaneous candidiasis is a rare diagnosis and the predisposing factors like prematurity, candidial infection in the mother are not obvious, a high index of suspicion is required to diagnose the neonates with this condition and it is very evident that congenital cutaneous candidiasis has got a good prognosis. This article apart from revealing the atypical presentations of cutaneous congenital candidiasis, also emphasizes the need to screen all pregnant women for vaginal candidiasis
