No Measurable Impact of Acute 26 GHz 5G Exposure on Salivary Stress Markers in Healthy Adults
International audienceThe rapid deployment of fifth generation (5G) wireless networks has raisedconcerns about potential health effects associated with exposure to novelradiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF) frequencies, particularly the 26 GHz bandwhich represents a new exposure scenario for the general population with limited prioruse in telecommunications. However, evidence regarding the acute biological impactof these exposures remains limited and inconclusive.This study aimed to assess whether short-term exposure (26.5 minutes) ofhealthy adults to 5G RF at 26 GHz, at levels representative of real-world environmentalconditions, affects salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase, two established biomarkers ofstress and autonomic nervous system activity. Thirty-one participants completed atriple-blind, randomized protocol with electroencephalography recordings. A subset ofsixteen participants from this group also participated in an exploratory protocol withcognitive testing and higher temporal sampling resolution (5minute intervals). Salivasamples were collected before, during, and after exposure in both protocols. RFexposure was delivered via a horn antenna at 2 V/m (head) and 1 V/m (torso), in linewith upper-range environmental measurements.Statistical analyses revealed no significant differences in salivary cortisol oralpha-amylase concentrations between real and sham exposures. Descriptiveexamination of the exploratory cognitive protocol, with higher temporal samplingresolution, showed consistent temporal stability of both biomarkers in both conditions.These findings suggest that acute 5G RF exposure at 26 GHz, under controlled andrealistic conditions, does not elicit measurable changes in stress biomarkers.Further research is warranted to evaluate the effects of repeated or long-termexposures and to investigate potential impacts in vulnerable populations

First-principles local-stress calculations for oxygen vacancies in silicon oxide glass materials
International audienceWe systematically investigated the correlation between defect formation energy and local stress states in amorphous SiO 2 (a-SiO 2 ) using first-principles calculations within density functional theory (DFT). Although conventional approaches require the structural relaxation of oxygen vacancy at each site, we demonstrated that the formation tendency of oxygen vacancies can be quantitatively predicted from the local stress state in a nondefective system. To achieve this, we employed a real-space analysis based on Bader partitioning and introduced a unit-based averaging method for local structural units, enabling physically meaningful stress evaluations in ionically disordered systems. A strong statistical correlation was found between the formation energy and the unit-averaged stress in the Si-O-Si unit, suggesting that the local compressive environments significantly facilitated oxygen removal with large structural relaxation. These results establish a predictive framework for identifying defect-prone sites in disordered systems, including amorphous structures, without exhaustive defect structure generation, thereby offering an efficient route for defect analysis and material design.</div
Evaluating the impact of an interprofessional education intervention on health profession students’ perceptions and collaborative competencies in Lebanon: a quasi-experimental study
International audienceBackground With increasing complexity in patient care, IPE has been proposed to improve interprofessional teamwork and improve outcomes. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of a structured IPE activity on students' collaborative perceptions and competencies. MethodThis study employed a quasi-experimental pre-post intervention design to assess changes in perceptions and self-reported competencies using validated tools (SPICE-R2 and ICCAS). The IPE intervention comprised a full day didactic sessions and case studies. Paired-samples t-tests, repeated measures ANOVA, and MANCOVA were utilized to assess changes and identify predictors.Results A total of 182 students (pharmacy: 66.5%, nutrition: 15.9%, and biomedical sciences: 17.6%) were included, with 154 students (84.6%) responding to the postsurvey. The pre-activity total SPICE-R2 score was moderately high (40.81 ± 6.09), and increased significantly to 45.65 ± 5.61 (p < 0.001) post-activity, with all subscales of interprofessional teamwork, roles and responsibilities, and patient outcomes showing significant improvements (p < 0.001). The preactivity total ICCAS score was moderately high (73.13 ± 7.35), and increased significantly to 87.51 ± 5.25 (p < 0.001) with the greatest gains observed in communication (+ 4.13), conflict resolution (+ 3.04), and team functioning (+ 2.10). Compared with pharmacy students, nutrition students showed greater improvements in both SPICE-R2 (B = 9.193, p < 0.001) and ICCAS (B = 6.605, p = 0.007) scores. Students with prior health education and IPE exposure reported greater improvements in both SPICE-R2 and ICCAS scores (p < 0.05). Conversely, clinical employment significantly predicted lower gains on the SPICE-R2 (B=-3.136, p = 0.047). ConclusionThe intervention led to significant improvements in interprofessional collaborative perceptions and competencies. Future longitudinal evaluations are needed to assess sustained impact and transfer to clinical practice.</div
Advances in modeling the Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived Schwann cells harboring SH3TC2 variants
International audienceABSTRACTBackgroundHereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the TTR gene. Associated with various clinical phenotypes like polyneuropathy and cardiomyopathy, ATTRv has historically had poor outcomes. Recent advances in biotherapies have significantly improved these outcomes. This study aimed to assess the evolution in genetic TTR variant screening since the advent of biotherapies in France in 2018.MethodsThis nationwide retrospective study analyzed data and genetic results from patients who underwent TTR gene sequencing from 2018 to 2023.Results16,640 patients were tested during the period studied. There was a 108% increase in the number of TTR gene sequencing performed annually between 2018 and 2023. Positive rates remained stable despite increased testing (7.09% over time). During this 6‐year period, 1,179 patients were diagnosed with a pathogenic variant of TTR.ConclusionsThe study shows a substantial rise in TTR genetic testing in France, likely linked to the deployment of biotherapies. These findings underscore the necessity of integrating TTR gene sequencing into standard diagnostic procedures, especially given the effectiveness of treatments and the stability of positive rates.</p

Recruitment and Retention for Alzheimer's Disease Diversity Genetic Cohorts in the ADSP (READD‐ADSP): A global effort to identify genetic factors in Alzheimer's disease.
International audienceINTRODUCTION Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains a major neurocognitive disorder of global health significance. Globalizing ancestral diversity in AD genetics is essential to identify causal variants, improve diagnosis, and enable equitable therapeutic interventions across populations. The Recruitment and Retention for Alzheimer's Disease Diversity Genetic Cohorts in the ADSP (READD‐ADSP) initiative addresses this by including African ancestry and Hispanic/Latinx (HL) ancestry populations. METHODS READD‐ADSP, a case–control study, aims to recruit, evaluate, and retain 13,000 participants: 5000 Indigenous Africans, 4000 African Americans, and 4000 Hispanic/Latinix individuals. In Africa, recruitment involves nine sub‐Saharan African countries under the African Dementia Consortium, and with protocols ensuring standardized data collection, phenotype harmonization, culturally informed diagnostic algorithms, and robust community engagement. RESULTS Study pparticipants are recruited, ascertained and retained. Blood samples and fractions (DNA, plasma, RNA) are biobanked for genomic, epigenomic, proteomic, and transcriptomic analyses. DISCUSSION This study will advance precision ADRD medicine and establish a model for working with diverse global cohorts of brain disorders. Highlights Recruitment and Retention for Alzheimer's Disease Diversity Genetic Cohorts in the ADSP (READD‐ADSP) addresses critical gaps in Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) research by including underrepresented groups. The study recruits 13,000 participants of African, African American, and Hispanic/Latinx ancestries. Standardized protocols enable rigorous phenotyping and harmonization across diverse populations. Findings will inform precision medicine and reduce health disparities in ADRD outcomes
