A Study on the Political Economy of Transforming Indigenous Technology in Nigeria through Appropriate Engineering and Technological Development
This paper examines the political economy of transforming indigenous technology in Nigeria through suitable engineering and technological development. The existing state of position of the indigenous technology with respect to its problems as it affects socio-economic growth, good governance and technological advancement were looked into. After in-depth evaluation, it was mirrored that there were some obstacles in the transformation of the nation’s indigenous technology to meet global standards. Therefore, this paper proposes the 3-I (imitation, improvement and innovation) technological advancement model as the way forward to start spiral process model of technological innovation that will aid the transformation of the indigenous technology to stimulate political-economic and technological advancement of the country. Economic growth will go side by side with technological advancement and national social security but the government is an indispensable entity in the developmental process
Quality Maintenance of Production Equipment: A Case Study of Bendel Feeds and Mills, Ewu, Edo State
This paper analyses the quality maintenance in Bendel Feeds and Mills, Ewu, Edo State, with a view of designing a robust maintenance process and schedule to enhance production equipment in the company. The specific objectives were to determine the failure rate in the company production equipment, establish the appropriate maintenance process needed to reduce failure rate, investigate whether the current material handling methods and practices permit high maintenance turnover and to proffer useful suggestions and ideas on how to effectively maintain production equipment in the company. Data obtained were used to analyse the materials handling equipment failure rate, MTTR, MTBF, availability, failure mode and work station. The results showed that the failure rate is more in bucket elevator equipment than other materials handling equipment. It was observed that the plant organisational structure is area controlled instead of centre controlled organisation, which is one of the problems of the plant maintenance policy adopted by the company. Maintenance of materials handling equipment of the plant can be better achieved through modified planned preventive maintenance, condition base maintenance (predictive) and equipment inspection. This analysis will be of tremendous help to practicing maintenance engineering
Effects of Erratic and Epileptic Electric Power Supply in Nigerian Telecommunication Industry: Causes and Solutions
The issue of erratic and epileptic power supply in Nigeria Electricity Company is as old as the country itself. This is not unconnected to some factors such as: inadequate power generated in the national grid, electric power losses in the distribution network, government instability and unstable power reform policies, to mention but a few. The effects of erratic and epileptic power supply have been a major challenge to every sector in Nigeria especially the telecommunication industry. The telecommunication industry plays a significant role in the growth and development of every nation. Hence, this paper aims at critically investigating the causes and effects of erratic and epileptic electric power supply in Nigerian telecommunication industry. More so, the paper suggested and recommended ways to curb and enhance the current erratic and epileptic power situation in the country in order to boost the productivity of telecommunication industry and other sectors as well
Process Inventory Management in a Production Company
This paper analyses the economics of material management in the 7up Bottling Company, Benin for the duration (2011 – 2015) with a view of designing a process inventory. The specific objectives were to determine the level of efficiency and product improvement in material management, investigate whether the material management practice permit high stock turnover validation and to proffer useful suggestions on how to effectively manage the company materials. The variance analysis and Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model were used to analyse the data collected. The results showed that the company spent a total of 118.8 million naira for production process and made a total sale of 395.84 million naira. This implies that the company optimises production by adopting the EOQ model into their production process and management. Based on these findings, the study recommends that optimal quantity and timing of material ordering in production process is a key to profit maximisation
Analysis of Line Outage Detection in Nigeria 330kV Transmission Lines using Phasor Measurement Units
In this work, an analysis of line outage detection in Nigeria 330kV transmission lines using Phasor Measurement Units was presented. This requires collection and analysis of the data obtained from Transmission Company of Nigeria with the aid of PSAT 2.10.1 / MATLAB SIMULINK using Newton-Raphson power flow algorithm and also to determine the effectiveness of PMU when introduced in our power system network. 12 buses and 3 Generators system were considered for the studied. This was achieved by collecting relevant transmission parameters for 330kV line and was simulated on PSAT 2.10.1 and MATLAB 2015a using Newton-Raphson power flow algorithm. The work involved an offline and online analysis. For the offline analysis the admittance / impedance matrix for Y-bus and bus voltage for pre-outage was obtained via the power flow analysis and change in impedance for the lines were calculated. These values were further normalised in order to reduce the value to a row echelon form. Then for the online analysis; the change in phase angle from the Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) online simulation for pre-outage and also post-outage was calculated and a normalised column matrix was gotten. Finally, the effectiveness of the line outage detection was graphically represented using MATLAB software to plot the values of the normalised values of the offline and online analysis; i.e., by comparing the normalised form of the offline and online values. These results clearly show that PMUs gives an accurate monitoring and total observability when introduced in Nigeria power system
Unavailability of K-out-of-N: G Systems with non-identical Components Based on Markov Model
The process industry has always been faced with the challenging tasks of determining the overall unavailability of safety instrumented systems (SISs). The unavailability of the safety instrumented system is quantified by considering the average probability of failure on demand. To mitigate these challenges, the IEC 61508 has established analytical formulas for estimating the average probability of failure on demand for K-out-of-N (KooN) architectures. However, these formulas are limited to the system with identical components and this limitation has not been addressed in many researches. Hence, this paper proposes an unavailability model based on Markov Model for different redundant system architectures with non-identical components and generalised formulas are established for non-identical k-out-of-n and n-out-of-n configurations. Furthermore, the proposed model incorporates undetected failure rate and evaluates its impact on the unavailability quantification of SIS. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified with the existing unavailability methods and it is shown that the proposed approach provides a sufficiently robust result for all system architectures.
 
Prospects of the Nigeria Brewery Industry
This study analyses the economics and determinants of a brewery industry (Guinness Nigeria Limited) with a view of establishing the future of breweries in Nigeria. The specific objectives were to estimate the factors influencing products production and determine the viability of products manufactured by the company. Multiple regression and the ordinary least square techniques were used to analyse the long-term (2006 - 2015) annual time series data observed for the study. The results showed that the major determinant of Stout, Harp and Malt production is demanded. As a significant input, it positively influences product production. The observed values of regression coefficients (R2) are 0.99349 (for Stout), 0.90981 (for Harp), and 0.99498 (for Malt), which indicates that they are reliable for determining the future of Guinness Nigeria Ltd. The results also showed that logarithm of demand for Stout production (LstoutD) of 13.5277, LharpD of 21.8439 and LmaltD of 12.2653 were projected respectively up to the year 2025, an indication that brewery production in the state is viable and that future is bright
Efficiency Analysis on Small Sized Generators in Nigeria
In this paper, efficiency analysis of small sized generators in Nigeria was considered. Experimental analyses were carried out on two (2) different samples of generators tagged “S” and “T” at different loading conditions (20%, 40%, 60% etc. of ratings) to ascertain the generators’ efficiencies as well as the maximum true power that could be drawn out from the generators. The experimental results are compared with the manufacturers ratings specified on the name plate of the generators. The results indicated an average efficiency of 44.9% and 55.7% for “T” and “S” respectively an indication that generator “S” is more efficient that “T”. The results also showed that the values of the power factor indicated on the generators are inaccurate as none of the generators could give the maximum power as indicated on their name plates based on the experimental analysis carried out. The generators selected were able to provide adequate power to the selected loads with efficiencies not up to 100% of the expected rated value of the generators. For generator “S” it was observed that the efficiency decreases from the highest rating to the lowest rating. Conclusively, this result suggests that portable generators dealers are taking advantage of the energy crises to importing generators not up to specifications to the Nigerian market at the expense of naïve customers. This paper recommends that proper standards and measures be put in place and enforced by the relevant authority for conformity of standards to all imported generators to save guard and protect the interest of potential customers and Nigerians
A Survey of Smart Grid Systems on Electric Power Distribution Network and Its Impact on Reliability
This paper presents an excerpt of a more comprehensive survey of smart grid systems on electric power distribution networks and its impact on reliability. The survey was carried out as part of the feasibility study in Nigeria to determine its enhance-ability on the smartness of a conventional (traditional) distribution network. A smart grid is not a single technology but multiplex technologies in which the combination of different areas of engineering, communication and energy management systems are done. Consequently, a comprehensive review of various approaches and their impact on reliability of the network is presented. Furthermore, this paper introduces the smart grid technology and its features, reliability impacts and emerging issues and challenges that arise from the smart grid system applications. The benefit of this comprehensive survey is to provide a reference point for educational advancement on the recently published articles in the areas of smart grid systems on electric power distribution network as well as to stimulate further research interest
