Holocene vegetation dynamics and landscape-shaping in Central Tunisia : A preliminary palynological study from Sebkha El Bhira (Kairouan Governorate)

    No full text
International audienceThe low-steppe regions of Tunisia are highly sensitive to both climatic changes (e.g. increasing aridity) and anthropogenic pressures (e.g. agriculture, over-grazing, urban sprawl). A retrospective approach is essential to unravel the complex environmental, climatic and landscape shaping processes to understand how climate and social-ecological interactions have impacted this ecosystem throughout the Holocene. To this end, a 16.54 m long sequence was recovered from the Sebkha El Bhira (Kairouan Governorate, Tunisia) and provides a thorough pollen record spanning the Holocene.Preliminary palynological analyses highlight three main pollen zones. The first zone, from 16.54 m to 5.56 m depth, is characterized by high values of Artemisia, Amaranthaceae and Poaceae, alongside smaller contributions of Asteroideae and Helianthemum. Mediterranean ligneous taxa like Juniperus, Quercus ilex-type and Olea all show a steady decline. The second zone, between 5.56 m and 2.60 m depth, is marked by a heavy contribution of Poaceae and Amaranthaceae, whilst Artemisia rates decline. Higher values of Brassicaceae, Asteroideae, Cichorieae, and Mediterranean plants are observed, along with minor inputs from the riparian vegetation (e.g. Salix, Alnus, Fraxinus) and the first appearance of Anthropogenic Pollen Indicator taxa (e.g. Cerealia-t., Plantago lanceolata-t.). The final zone, from 2.60 m depth until the surface, displays a resurgence of Amaranthaceae values and a decline in Poaceae. Artemisia rates gradually increases, reaching their acme in the uppermost samples, accompanied by notable peaks of Olea and Brassicaceae frequencies.Overall, the pollen data reveal an early phase dominated by an Artemisia low-steppe surrounding an Amaranthaceae-dominated chott around the sebkha, with a Mediterranean matorral vegetation covering the neighboring djbels slowly declining. The second phase suggests episodic rises of the sebkha water levels, inferred from the replacement of halophytic Amaranthaceae values by Poaceae. The final phase indicates a shift in land-use practices, marked by clear evidence of olive cultivation and grazing-induced degradation of the steppe.Ultimately, this preliminary palynological study outlines significant changes in vegetation composition over the Holocene and highlights a tipping point in the landscape shaping process driven by the onset of intensive agricultural land-use within the past two centuries

Experimental Validation of Continuous Emission Ultrafast Ultrasound Imaging

    No full text
International audienceConventional ultrasound imaging relies on the pulse-echo (PE) paradigm, which inherently limits the frame rate and leaves the system blind during the receive period. To address these limitations, Continuous Emission Ultrasound Imaging (CEUI) has been proposed as a new approach that continuously insonifies the medium using a coded excitation. Owing to its continuous interaction with the medium, CEUI can in theory achieve a frame rate limited only by the sampling frequency. This work presents the first experimental validation of CEUI in a 1D setup using separate transmit and receive transducers for Motion-Mode imaging. Compared to PE performed at different PRFs (up to 10 kHz), CEUI achieved a frame rate of 1 MHz, enabling precise tracking of both slow and fast motions. These results demonstrate the feasibility of CEUI and its potential to surpass PE imaging in high frame rate applications.</div

    R-equivalence on group schemes

    No full text
International audienceWe define R-equivalence for group schemes over a semilocal ring and relate this with rational properties. Two main cases are investigated: tori and isotropic semisimple simply connected group schemes where we show in certain cases that R-equivalence coincide with Karoubi-Villamayor equivalence and is also related to the Kneser-Tits problem in this setting. Finally we construct specialization maps for R-equivalence in the case of regular algebras containing a field

Comprendre l'odorat : Anatomie, physiologie et neuroplasticité

    No full text

Evidence of organized but not disorganized attachment in wild Western chimpanzee offspring (Pan troglodytes verus)

International audienceHuman attachment theory outlines three organized types: secure, insecure avoidant and insecure resistant, all considered adaptive responses to maternal care for offspring survival. In contrast, disorganized attachment is hypothesized to be maladaptive and therefore uncommon in wild mammals, though this remains untested. We assessed attachment types in 50 wild chimpanzees (ages 0-10 years) in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire. Using 3,795 h of mother and offspring focal observations, we found no behaviours indicative of disorganized attachment. To explore organized attachment, we analysed a subset of 18 immature chimpanzees and their behavioural responses to 309 natural threatening events. Their responses showed organized attachment patterns: some sought maternal closeness (secure-like), while others displayed independence (insecure avoidant-like).Our study supports the hypothesis that organized attachment types are adaptive and have a long evolutionary history.Attachment is defined as an affectionate bond between an infant and primary caregiver, characterized by physical proximity and reactions to separation 1,2 . In humans, attachment is crucial for both the physical and psychological well-being of the offspring 3 . Attachment theory suggests that the caregiver, usually the mother, serves as a secure base, enabling exploration and providing a safe haven for the infant during distress 4 .In humans, offspring attachment to a primary caregiver is commonly examined using an experimental paradigm known as the Strange Situation Procedure (SSP) 5,6 . According to the SSP, different types of attachment can be classified based on the assessment of the offspring's perception of safety in the caregiver-offspring relationship. This is defined as confidence in the caregiver's availability and responsiveness, and is revealed by exposing the child to a temporary separation from their caregiver. Ainsworth and colleagues 5 described three types of 'organized' attachment, referring to attachment behaviours that are structured and consistent: (1) secure, (2) insecure resistant/ambivalent and (3) insecure avoidant (Fig. 1). Organized attachment is hypothesized to represent strategies adapted to the caregiver's responsiveness, ensuring offspring survival and sustained development in diverse early social settings. Such strategies are thought to be formed to optimize social capacity in the relevant environment 2,7 . Secure attachment arises from confidence in the caregiver's availability, nurtured by their high responsiveness. On the other hand, insecure-avoidant offspring adjust their behaviour due to their caregiver's lack of responsiveness,</div

Inégalités spatiales urbaines et marché du travail

This thesis lies at the crossroads of the housing and the labor markets. The aim is to better understand the inequalities that result from the interaction between the two. The central argument is that location matters, in particular for employment prospects. This idea runs through the three chapters, which progressively shift the focus from the micro level of neighborhoods to broader geographic differences between cities. A particular attention is also given to housing costs in relation to the affordable housing issue. The first chapter aims at understanding whether neighborhoods, and in particular interaction with neighbors, can shape the job search behaviors of unemployed individuals. To do so, micro-level data from the French Labor Force Survey is used to define job search behaviors alongside two dimensions (intensity and channels used), and to identify two nested level of neighborhoods. A method à la Bayer et al. (2008) is used to face the non-random sorting of individuals across neighborhoods. To tackle the reflection issue, Lee (2007)'s strategy is implemented. The findings provide evidence of patterns interpreted as imitation effects in job search behaviors, particularly regarding the use of personal and professional networks. The more unemployed neighbors search through networks, the more unemployed individuals do so. Being surrounded by neighbors with strong labor market connections also matters. This suggests that local social interaction effects in job search could amplify labor market inequalities across neighborhoods. The second chapter focuses on the question of wage compensation for housing costs. When housing costs rise with city size, wages should do the same in order to compensate for this. Yet, the relationship is not so simple, and may vary across skills. The objective is thus to provide a robust measure of the relative compensation for housing costs between skill levels across cities, and its evolution over 2012-2020, in France. A specific method is proposed to build a composite housing cost index comprising the three segments of the French housing market. Recent developments in the urban wage premia literature are also used to build local skill wage indexes. The results outline two distinct periods: (i) a first 2012-2015 period in which both skill levels receive similar compensation; (ii) a second period, from 2016 onward, in which housing costs rise and high-skilled are more compensated. This chapter thus contributes to a better understanding of the affordable housing issue in France by shedding light on a specific dimension: the unequal compensation for housing costs across skill levels. The third chapter focuses on the consequences of high housing costs on labor market disparities between high-skilled and low-skilled workers. It builds on the results of the second chapter as well as on several other empirical observations that suggest that low-skilled may be more affected than high-skilled by high housing costs. A between-city analysis that compares labor market outcomes gaps between skills across cities is implemented. It makes use of an extensive employer-employee matched dataset along with a two-step approach à la Combes et al. (2008) to build labor market measures. To treat the endogeneity between the housing and the labor market a 2SLS strategy making use of the inverse housing supply elasiticies computed by Chapelle et al. (2023) is also implemented. The results underline that higher housing costs increase the gap in securing long-term contract between skill levels. This effect is mainly driven by low-skilled women, and strengthens with age. No significant effects are found for promotion probabilities.
