Teknodotos: An unknown saint, a provincial military official, and the desire to conceive in Middle Byzantine Naxos

    No full text
International audienceUnderstanding holy figures in Byzantine society is an undertaking mainly reliant on assessing a large body of written texts. Church dedications, representations in mosaics and frescoes, as well as icons, relics, and epigraphic material are mainly used as evidence to explore questions concerning the proliferation of their cults or to reveal specific aspects of a saint's identity. But did all the saints have a "written Life" ? Or are there holy persons whose written records have not yet been located (or have survived) and whose images remain the only evidence of their existence and of a local cult or personal devotion ?In this paper we examine a saint named Teknodotos, who is only known, as far as we are able to ascertain, from one fresco found on Naxos and dated to the second half of the 11 th century. This unique depiction is located within a private devotional setting -a church most likely founded by a military official on his private estate. In what follows, we aim to explore the occurrences of this unknown saint in other sources and to reconstruct the possible circumstances that contributed to the saint's representation in this specific context. Furthermore, we argue that a comprehensive understanding of the creation and reception of saints in Byzantine society requires a focused and systematic engagement with both their visual representations and the accompanying epigraphic material, as these sources provide crucial insights into the ways sanctity was constructed, communicated, and experienced. </div

Evaluation of the predictive value of CSF-restricted oligoclonal bands on residual disability and risk of relapse in adult patients with MOGAD: MOGADOC study

    No full text
International audienceBackground: The clinical course of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is variable. However, robust markers of poor outcome and/or relapse risk are still missing. Objective: To evaluate the frequency of cerebrospinal fluid-restricted oligoclonal bands (CSF-OCB) in a national cohort of adult MOGAD patients and to assess their prognostic value for the risk of relapse and severity. Methods: We included MOGAD adult patients fulfilling the MOGAD 2023 criteria who underwent CSF analysis at maximum 3 months from onset. Results: Data from 190 patients were collected. We found the presence of CSF-OCB in 32 patients (16.8%). Positive and negative CSF-OCB patients were similar for median age at onset, sex, clinical presentation, severity at onset, and residual disability. Relapses were more frequent in the CSF-OCB+ group (p = 0.049), particularly within the first year of follow-up (p = 0.007). Although CSF-OCB+ was more frequently associated with imaging features suggestive of multiple sclerosis (MS) (p = 0.014), 78% of these patients fulfilled the 2023 supportive features and 65% experienced lesion vanishing at follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).Conclusion: We found a higher risk of relapse in MOGAD with CSF-OCB particularly during the first year. Close attention is recommended regarding the risk of misdiagnosis with MS

Laboratory characterisation bench for high precision astrometry

    No full text
International audienceHigh precision differential astrometry assesses the positions, distances, and motions of celestial objects in relation to the stars. The focal plane of such space telescope must be calibrated with a precision down to the level of 1e-5 pixel in order to be able to detect Earth-like planets in the close vicinity of the Sun. The presented characterization bench is designed to improve the technology readiness level for the following key points: calibration of new detectors with a high number of pixels and correcting the field distortion using stars in the field of view. The first aim of the project concentrates on the characterization of a 46 megapixels sensor from PYXALIS, to assess its typical parameters using an integrating sphere. The next objective intends to map the intra and extra pixel quantum yield of the detector with a precision of 1e-5 pixels and investigate the evolution of the pixel geometry in response to environment fluctuations. To conduct these tests, an optical bench is designed with an LCD screen and a doublet, used as a source that allows directing light to specific groups of pixels. Interferometric calibration of the detector pixel centroid position will be achieved using fibers that illuminate the detector with Young's fringes. To characterize the distortion of the detector, a diaphragm will produce adjustable optical aberrations to be corrected and therefore change the source sensor positional relationship. The final step involves the simulation of a star's field, which will be imaged on the detector to assess optical quality

Explaining the impact of citizens’ initiatives on social movements: insights from the Spanish housing movement

Published online: 03 May 2024International audienceHow do instruments of direct democracy affect the social movement organisations that sponsor them? Drawing on social movement studies and direct democracy research, we argue that direct democracy has a transformative effect on its sponsors because it triggers a triple process of movement building, learning, and bargaining with political elites. This triple process sets in motion enduring trends within the organisation that has undertaken the burden of promoting the initiative. We illustrate this argument with the case of a people's legislative initiative (a non-binding mechanism of direct democracy) organised by a housing rights organisation between 2011 and 2013 to counter the eviction crisis in Spain. This initiative did not result in the reform that activists demanded. Nevertheless, it contributed to consolidating the sponsor organisation, innovating its repertoire of action, and broadening its strategic options.</div

Polygraphs: From Rewriting to Higher Categories

    No full text
International audiencePolygraphs are a higher-dimensional generalization of the notion of directed graph. Based on those as unifying concept, this monograph on polygraphs revisits the theory of rewriting in the context of strict higher categories, adopting the abstract point of view offered by homotopical algebra. The first half explores the theory of polygraphs in low dimensions and its applications to the computation of the coherence of algebraic structures. It is meant to be progressive, with little requirements on the background of the reader, apart from basic category theory, and is illustrated with algorithmic computations on algebraic structures. The second half introduces and studies the general notion of n-polygraph, dealing with the homotopy theory of those. It constructs the folk model structure on the category of strict higher categories and exhibits polygraphs as cofibrant objects. This allows extending to higher dimensional structures the coherence results developed in the first half

Conjectures and results on modular representations of GLn(K)\mathrm{GL}_n (K) for a pp-adic field KK

International audienceLet pp be a prime number and KK a finite extension of Qp\mathbb{Q}_p. We state conjectures on the smooth representations of GLn(K)\mathrm{GL}_n (K) that occur in spaces of mod pp automorphic forms (for compact unitary groups). In particular, when KK is unramified, we conjecture that they are of finite length and predict their internal structure (extensions, form of subquotients) from the structure of a certain algebraic representation of GLn\mathrm{GL}_n. When n=2n = 2 and KK is unramified, we prove several cases of our conjectures, including new finite length results

Lecture typologique du récit de la Transfiguration : le schéma ternaire “démiurge, nature et temps”. L’Ambiguum 10 de Maxime à la lumière du Timée de Platon

    No full text

Toward New Forms of Cash-Based Social Support for Territorial Resilience? An Examination of Local Currency Initiatives under Covid

    No full text
International audienceSince the 2000s, a few countries have witnessed the emergence of local currency initiatives (LCs) designed as transformative programs with a medium and long-term perspective. The Covid crisis of 2020-2021 prompted a shift toward addressing short-term needs. This paper considers LCs from a territorial resilience standpoint. It presents an analysis of 18 cases in French-speaking regions. Most of them pre-existed the pandemic and launched initiatives to cope with its challenges. A few others were initiated during the pandemic and for its specific challenges. The paper contrasts three forms of resilience: absorptive, adaptive, and transformative. It demonstrates how LCs typically support territorial resilience projects from a transformative standpoint. The scope and evolution of the 18 Covid-related initiatives show that cooperation between local authorities and monetary nonprofits resulted in a more effective response to the short-term challenges and fostered connections that can sustain the adaptive and transformative forms of territorial resilience
