International audienceAddressing the paradoxes of democratic school education, which is torn between the liberal requirement of state ethical neutrality and the promotion of normative virtues, this chapter aims to discuss the idea that schools should absolutely refrain from promoting a conception of the good. In particular, it examines arguments compatible with a liberal framework, such as the idea that certain virtues support the power to act and that the neutrality of the State as educator risks ending up endorsing the primacy of conceptions of the good life supported by the predominant social forces.

International audienceThis article analyses the erasing from memory of the Union de Lille, a consumers’ cooperative at the heart of Lille’s workers and socialist movement, which was consigned to oblivion over the course of the 20th century. Based on press archives and those of the cooperative and the Socialist Party, as well as on interviews with a limited number of actors who actually knew the Union, the article highlights mutations in the cooperative movement, the party and the city, as well as the role of their leaders in this “manufactured forgetting”. Finally, it examines the way in which this historic and collective effort can contribute to forms of memorial resistance.

John Dewey and John R. Commons : Crossed Perspectives on Ethics, the State and Democracy

    No full text
International audienceThis article offers a renewed comparative analysis of John Dewey and John R. Commons−respectively a philosopher and an economist-sociologist−aimed at clarifying the intellectual foundations that pragmatism provides for institutional economics. While the two thinkers evolved in parallel and Commons explicitly drew on Dewey, the depth and structure of their theoretical convergences remain insufficiently explored. Our contribution is to show that both authors share a pragmatist ontology centred on associated action, the transactional nature of social life, and the intrinsic correlation between economic, political, legal, and ethical phenomena. This common ground supports a democratic ethic that informs their respective approaches to social inquiry and social reform. Building on this framework, we provide an original interpretation of how Commons operationalizes Dewey's normative ideal of creative democracy. His theory of reasonable value and his institutional design for economic democracy translate Dewey's ethical commitments into concrete mechanisms for regulating capitalism through collective bargaining, representative interests, and inquiry-based rulemaking. The article concludes by raising a central question for contemporary institutionalism: how compatible are Dewey's radical democratic aspirations with Commons' reformist ideal of a ``reasonable capitalism''?

    Involutions de Möbius

We revisit and extend the classical theory of M\"obius involutions, presenting a unified geometric framework that highlights their ubiquity and utility in similarity geometry and mathematical physics. We analyze compositions of spiral similarities, clarifying how dilation factors, rotation angles, and the often‑overlooked relations among fixed points interact under composition. Reinterpreting these phenomena via M\"obius involutions yields simpler proofs and sharper structural insights. We treat indirect involutions (inversions), give a complete account of three pairwise commuting inversions, and prove Ramondou’s recent conjecture on elliptic and hyperbolic pencils of circles. Finally, we introduce a novel similarity geometry on pairs of points exchanged by a fixed M\"obius involution, define collinearity and concyclicity in this setting, and present applications that simultaneously exchange multiple classical point pairs. The results synthesize historical sources with new observations and demonstrate that M\"obius involutions are both fundamental and practically powerful in geometry

International audienceUrban planning faces new challenges that question the place of biodiversity in urban spaces and the benefits it brings to city dwellers. In developing strategies to protect biodiversity, we need to take in consideration the role of residents, particularly those living in private multi-family residential dwellings. These residents can choose to favorize a diversity of species by adapting the layout and management of their gardens. To mobilize them effectively, we need to better understand their relationship with biodiversity and identify ways to encourage them to play a more active role in its protection. One way of creating links with biodiversity is through sound: biodiversity produces sounds that can be appreciated by the public, particularly birds, whose diverse songs depend on the composition and layout of gardens. This article examines the relevance of a sensitive approach based on the sounds produced by biodiversity to better understand the relationship between residents and the city. It explores the emotions and feelings that bird songs provide to residents, the knowledge and values they associate with theses, and assesses whether this auditory component of biodiversity can inspire intentions to transform the city and foster bird protection. To this end, we conducted an in situ survey combining listening sessions and directive interviews with 34 residents living in multi-family residential dwellings in the Metropolis of Lyon. The results show that bird song has a positive impact on the living environment and encourages residents to think about the ecological quality of their garden landscapes. However, résidents do not necessarily perceive theses as connected to other urban areas, and while some express a desire to protect birds, this intention is mostly confined to private spaces.L’aménagement de la ville doit répondre à de nouveaux enjeux qui questionnent la place de la biodiversité dans les espaces urbains et les bénéfices qu’elle apporte aux citadins.
