Published Online : 26 November 2025International audienceThe first comprehensive investigation to date of the Aristotelian roots of Niccolò Machiavelli's radical republican thought. Arguing that the conceptual language of Aristotelianism shapes key aspects of Machiavelli's radical ideas, this book is required reading for those interested in the political thought of one of the most important authors of modernity. Machiavelli, Aristotle and Radical Republicanism shows how Machiavelli draws upon Greek and Aristotelian sources to challenge classical republicanism and examines influence of the Early Modern Aristotelian intellectual context on the development of Machiavelli's political thought. This approach helps to overcome many of the problems in understanding Machiavelli's relationship with ancient sources and reveals the selective and deeply strategic character of Machiavelli's appropriation of the premodern tradition. Working from an interdisciplinary perspective, the book combines sources and methods from the history of political thought, the history of philosophy, literature, and political theory. Machiavelli, Aristotle and Radical Republicanism gives an original interpretation of Machiavelli's radical ideas following from his encounter with five different but intertwined Aristotelian themes: 1) the relationship between prudence and fortune, 2) the reservation of tyranny, 3) the wisdom of the crowd, 4) the idea of democracy and its relationship to poverty and 5) the problem of civil religion. It provides an unprecedented engagement with several Latin and vernacular Aristotelian texts that circulated in Machiavelli's time and with Aristotelian authors who were contemporary to Machiavelli such as Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498), Giovanni Pontano (1436-1503), Pietro Pomponazzi (1462-1525)

Evaluation of global biotic resource consumption against absolute boundaries
International audienceHuman activities rely on biotic natural resources to provide products and services necessary to meet human needs. This instrumental value is captured in life-cycle assessment through the “Natural resources” Area of Protection. Although several absolute boundaries have been proposed to safeguard biotic resources, it remains unclear whether these resources are currently used at a sustainable rate. This study addresses this question by evaluating global biotic resource consumption from 1995 to 2011 against suggested biotic resource boundaries, relying on Exiobase projections to assess the evolution beyond 2011. The assessment couples absolute boundaries with life-cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods, enabling evaluation using consistent LCIA metrics. Five absolute boundaries and four LCIA methods were adapted to the Exiobase multiregional input-output model. Results show that most of existing boundaries are already transgressed, regardless of whether mass-based or LCIA-based control variables are applied. The wide range and normative nature of existing boundaries emphasize the need for harmonized, science-based boundaries to ensure the sustainable use of biotic resources
International audienceThis article examines the figure of Seron (Σήρων), an officer in Antiochos IV’s army in southern Syria. The study of the linguistic and dialectal characteristics of this commander’s name reveals a Cretan origin, challenging previous hypotheses suggesting Thracian or Lacedaemonian origins. The parallel with Σηρίων, attested in a Cretan inscription from Lisos, supports this interpretation. Furthermore, the article situates Seron among Cretan soldiers serving the Seleucids and members of the Cretan diaspora established in the cities of the Phoenician coast and southern Syria during the Hellenistic period.
Implementing SPHINCS+ on Embedded Systems: Ensuring Performance in Resource-Constrained Environments
International audienceQuantum computing poses a significant threat to widely used public-key cryptographic schemes such as RSA and ECDSA. Post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) algorithms like SPHINCS+, recently standardized in Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 205, offer a quantum-resistant alternative but are resource-intensive and challenging to deploy on embedded systems with strict real-time constraints. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of accelerating SPHINCS+ on Traveo II embedded platforms dedicated to automotive applications, specifically the 1M (CYT2B7) variant, featuring an Arm Cortex-M4F with Cortex-M0+ cryptographic cores and integrated SHA-2 accelerators. By offloading key hash operations and leveraging multicore execution across the application and Hardware Security Module (HSM) cores, we achieve measurable performance gains. Our results show that this hybrid approach can bring SPHINCS+ execution times within limits acceptable for automotive-grade embedded systems. However, to meet stricter real-time requirements, dedicated hardware support such as FPGA-based accelerators or integrated PQC co-processors will be necessary. These findings contribute to bridging the gap between post-quantum cryptography and practical deployment in constrained embedded environments

Unrolled Multiplicative Updates for Nonnegative Matrix Factorization applied to Hyperspectral Unmixing
HyperSpectral Unmixing (HSU), the problem of separating mixed spectra of overlapping materials in a hyperspectral image, has motivated dedicated algorithmic developments in the last two decades. On the one hand, traditional model-based algorithms frequently guarantee interpretable results. On the other hand, deep-learning-based approaches are often faster at inference time and may obtain better empirical results. This work utilizes the strengths of both approaches by building on the deep unrolling paradigm. Our contribution is twofold. First, we propose two new algorithms based on deep unrolling of the well-known Multiplicative Updates. The first, coined Non-Adaptive Learned Multiplicative Updates (NALMU), adopts a simple element-wise multiplicative scheme. The second, called Recursive Adaptive Learned Multiplicative Updates (RALMU), has more flexible updates and better take into account the spatial correlations in the abundances. Second, we relate NALMU to the minimization of an explicit cost function under some assumptions. Such guarantees are unique in the HSU field. NALMU and RALMU are tested on astrophysics and remote sensing datasets. They outperform the other deep learning-based HSU algorithms and classical iterative schemes for the endmember estimates and obtain competitive results for the abundance estimates, even when trained in a self-supervised way. The code used in this paper will be made available upon publication
On voting rules satisfying false-name-proofness and participation
We consider voting rules in settings where voters' identities are difficult to verify.Voters can manipulate the process by casting multiple votes under different identities or abstaining from voting. Immunities to such manipulations are called false-nameproofness and participation, respectively. For the universal domain of (strict) preferences, these properties together imply anonymity and are incompatible with neutrality. For the domain of preferences defined over all subsets of a given set of objects, both of these properties cannot be met by onto and object neutral rules that also satisfy the topsonly criterion. However, when preferences over subsets of objects are restricted to be separable, all these properties can be satisfied. Furthermore, the domain of separable preferences is maximal for these properties.</p
Three-dimensional microphone array for the reconstruction of compact dipole aeroacoustic sources with spatially varying orientation
International audienceThis work investigates, using a microphone array, the localization of aeroacoustic sources resulting from the interaction of a flow with rods. In similar investigations in the literature, arrays often have a planar geometry and the spatial region in which acoustic sources are searched is a plane parallel to that of the array. However, the sources are not always distributed in such a plane. Moreover, aeroacoustic sources resulting from flow-obstacle interaction are often dipoles, and for some complex geometries, the dipoles' orientation can vary in space, such as for curved obstacles or arrangements of rods with different orientations. In order to identify such dipoles, this work uses a three-dimensional array composed of four flat arrays, forming a tunnel of 1024 microphones around the open vein of an anechoic wind tunnel. Microphone signals are processed by an inverse beamforming technique to identify equivalent dipole sources producing the measured sound field at the array, using classical Tikhonov regularization. Taking advantage of the acoustic compactness of the cross-section of the rods located in the flow, the dipoles are sought along the axis of the rods, with a spacing of the order of the vortex shedding coherence length. The technique does not require any prior assumption on dipole orientation. Results from simulated or experimental data are presented to assess the effectiveness of the method, in the cases of a rectilinear rod and a bended rod forming a ring
International audienceThis article is the first in a series of four papers devoted to Établissements d’Hébergement pour Personnes Âgées Dépendantes (EHPAD, French long-term residential care facilities for dependent elderly adults). The first volume (I) analyzes the historical and institutional transition from the former “retirement/nursing home” to the modern EHPAD, highlighting the contemporary paradoxes inherent in the “living-care environment”: clashes between the home-like model and hospital-based approach, between security issues and freedom of movement, between managerial rationalization and the recognition of subjectivity. By integrating demographic data, legal frameworks, and assessment tools (AGGIR, PATHOS), the study examines their effect on the quality of life, the temporality of dying, and the psychic containment provided within institutions. The second paper will explore the subjective experiences of residents and their relatives — including transitions, consent, relational bonds, and loss. The third will propose a comprehensive approach to palliative care in an EHPAD, integrating psychological, social, and legal dimensions around the medical axis. The fourth will focus on clinical and organizational expertise within an EHPAD — addressing issues of sexuality, addictions, grief, behavioral disorders, and the environmental development of the living space. These interviews, undertaken and conducted by Professor Jean-Pierre Bouchard, a clinical psychologist, bring together a multidisciplinary group of professionals — clinical psychologists and researchers, a geriatrician and facility coordinator, a neuropsychologist and nursing home director, and a professor of private law and criminal sciences — offer a pluralistic, dialogical, and interdisciplinary perspective of the contemporary challenges in institutional care. Through a series of cross-disciplinary interviews, the reader is invited to explore the ethical, clinical, and existential complexity of palliative care in an EHPAD, examining how these institutions might once again become settings of life, relationships, and meaning, rather than mere systems of maintenance or dependency management. The authors advocate for the development — with the support of public authorities — of a genuine palliative culture of presence and relational care, centered on recognizing the individual in their vulnerability and desires. Grounded in the concept that subjectivity is at the very heart of care, this approach invites us to reimagine the EHPAD as a space of hospitality, where the elderly person remains a subject of history, memory, and temporality, even when faced with their own mortality.
