    A Review on Kariveppilai Vadagam-Siddha Medicine for Diarrhoea

    The word "Siddha" comes from the root word "Citti," which denotes accomplishment, attainment of perfection, and eternal bliss. A scientific and comprehensive approach is used by the Siddha system of medicine, a traditional medical system, to provide preventive, promotional, curative, rejuvenating, and rehabilitative healthcare. At least three loose, liquid, or watery bowel motions per day-also spelt diarrhea- is the definition of diarrhoea. It frequently lasts a few days and can lead to dehydration from fluid loss. The aim of this review article is to explore the scientific literary evidence for the therapeutic usage of Kariveppilai vadagam for Kazhichal/Diarrhoea as mentioned in Citta Vaittiya Tirattu and to concentrate on the Pharmacological activity for the drug\u27s therapeutic properties. The majority of the raw ingredients used to make Kariveppilai vadagam contain anti-diarrheal activity, which supports its use in diarrhoea

    Evidence Based Review of Scope of Panchkarma in Children

    Panchkarma is a therapeutic process of Ayurveda wherein the vitiated Doshas are expelled out of the patient’s body, leading to detoxification of the body. It is also useful in diseases of children like cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, rhinitis, etc. Materials: Available research literature in PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, DHARA and Ayush Research Portal was searched extensively for the Panchkarma in children. Journals published online in last 20 years were considered. Ayurveda classical texts were also referred. Observations: Panchkarma therapies like Abhyanga, Shashti shali pinda sweda and Basti have significant results in Spastic Cerebral Palsy. Bell`s palsy can be treated with Shiro-abhyang, Nasya and Pata sveda. Disorders like DMD, AS, ADHD and constipation are shown to be managed well with Panchkarma procedures. Conclusion: Panchkarma procedures are very effective in diseases of children like cerebral palsy, Bells’s palsy, muscular dystrophy, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and constipation. Thus, it needs to be widely publicized for use in children along with oral medications for maximum benefits

    Infertility has emerged as a significant disorder, primarily influenced by the stresses of the modern world, insufficient consumption of wholesome organic foods, and the evolving lifestyle patterns. Anovulation-related infertility has become a major concern among individuals of reproductive age in the current generation, largely due to unfavourable lifestyle shifts. A notable portion of couples seeking help at fertility clinics grapple with infertility caused by the absence of ovulation. In a remarkable 90% of these cases, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) stands as the predominant culprit. The timeless wisdom of ancient Ayurvedic scholar Sushruta continues to hold relevance today. His delineation of the four crucial factors for conception remains as imperative as it was in the past. Among these factors, the health of the ovum stands out, and disruptions in Vata Dosha often manifest as issues in ovulatory function. This narrative presents a case study involving an infertile couple who had been unable to conceive for three years. The wife\u27s diagnosis indicated Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD). Despite undergoing conventional treatments, including hormonal therapy, their attempts were unsuccessful. The treatment strategy employed an approach called Uttar Basti alongside Prajasthapak Ghrita and Garbhaprada Yoga (a formulation supporting conception) administered orally. Notably, the outcome of this Ayurvedic intervention was the successful conception of the patient within just three months of treatment

    Effect of Siravedha in the Management of Viswachi with special reference to Cervical Radiculopathy

    Radiculopathy, commonly referred as pinched nerve, refers to a set of conditions in which one or more nerves are affected and their functioning is hampered. Cervical radiculopathy is a clinical condition resulting from compression of nerve roots due to disc herniation or degenerative stenosis which leads to neck pain, numbness and radiating arm pain in the distribution of the affected nerve root. Often this radicular pain is accompanied by motor or sensory disturbances also. The main treatments available are use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, epidural steroid injection and surgery in the last stages. But the side effects of NSAID’s, incomplete neurologic recovery, loss of full cervical range of movement and surgical complications are the main hurdle in the management of cervical radiculopathy. In Ayurvedic classics, clinical picture of cervical radiculopathy can be explained under the heading of Viswachi. It is a Vatavyadhi mainly affecting the Kandaras leading to restricted movements and loss of function of upper limb. At present, there is no specific treatment procedure, which can offer quick relief of pain and other associated symptoms of cervical radiculopathy. Acharya Susruta mentioned Siravedha in the management of Viswachi. It is one of the most effective methods of Rakthamoksha by which vitiated Doshas can be eliminated in a faster way. In the present study, 150ml of blood was withdrawn from corresponding cephalic vein as a onetime procedure. Assessments were done before procedure, immediately after procedure, on 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day after procedure.     Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome after Correction of Hyponatremia

    Osmotic demyelination syndrome is a rare neurological disease resulting in cerebral apoptosis and loss of myelin due to osmotic stress. Based on anatomical localization and pathological attributes, ODS can be categorized as Central Pontine Myelinolysis (CPM) and Extrapontine Myelinolysis (EPM). It has a biphasic course, with first phase reflecting electrolyte imbalance and the second with pontine dysfunction, impaired vigilance and movement disorders. In an autopsy-based study, a prevalence rate of 0.25–0.5% was seen in the general population and 10% in patients undergoing liver transplantation. Being a rare disease with variable, but preventable outcome, the present case was managed with Ayurvedic oral medication and Panchakarma therapy with an aim to improve the quality of life. In Ayurvedic perspective, Vata kshaya lakshanas occur during the phase of hyponatremia and further correction of this leads to disruption of osmolality (Kapha pitta accumulation) resulting in Avarana of Vata. This may be the reason for demyelination and localisation of Vata in Sira and Snayu leading to Sira snayu shoshana on both halves of the body resulting in Sarvangaroga (full body afflicted with Vata). Thus Avaranahara, Srotosodhana and Vatanulomana principles were adopted. An improvement in Barthel index and modified rankin scale were observed after a course of treatment for 30 days

    Parallel Study of Medodhara Kala and Abdominal Adipose Tissue with Special Reference to Sthoulya (Obesity)

    Obesity which is neuroendocrine disorder seems to be common predisposing factor for almost all non-communicable diseases. This neuroendocrine disturbance causes multiple systemic disorders and finally Ayurhasa (reduction in longevity of life) by various means. Ayurveda mentioned eight pathophysiological conditions considered as Nindya (worse conditions). Atisthool (excessive weight) is one of these conditions due to improper Aahara (dietary habits), Vihar (sedentary life style) and changed sleep pattern. Apachita meda (improperly metabolized fat) deposited in Udara (abdomen). Medodharakala according to Ayurveda and abdominal linings bear several similar characteristics related to fat and Medodhatu deposition. Deterioration of functioning of Medodhara kala leads to deposition of Apachita meda leading to Sthoulya. In obesity, abdominal wall, space between organs stores much amount of adipose tissue (site of Meda deposition).     Medicinal plants have been used in all cultures as a source of medicine since ages. When parts of plants such as rhizomes, leaves or barks and other natural materials are used as drugs to treat illnesses, they are called crude drugs and the study of crude drugs is called pharmacognosy. Proximate analysis in plants gives valuable information and help to assess the quality of a crude drug. Beneficial effects of crude drugs are believed to be attributed to plant phytochemicals. Hedychium coronarium J. Koenig, a medicinal and aromatic plant of high value is an endangered and red-listed plant. The rhizome of this plant is used for the treatment of various diseases. Crude extracts prepared from the rhizomes show antibacterial and antifungal properties. Essential oils obtained from Hedychium coronarium are found to be rich in terpenes and used for bactericidal, fungicidal, medicinal and cosmetic applications. The present study assesses the quality of crude drugs prepared from this highly medicinal plant. Proximate analysis and phytochemical screening of rhizomes of Hedychium coronarium, which is frequently consumed as food and as medicine were carried out. Ash content was found to be low) when compared to the moisture content. The water extractive value was more than alcohol extractive. Preliminary tests carried out on phytochemicals revealed the presence of terpenoids and oils. High Resolution Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrophotometry was carried to ascertain the different components of essential oils and revealed the presence of eucalyptol (1,8-cineole), caryophyllene oxide, camphor, linoleic acid, ricinin, phloroglucinol, 6-gingerol, carvone and arjungenin

    Concurrence of Bronchial Asthma, PCOS in Young Adolescent and its Management by Siddha Therapeutics - A Case Study

    Growing evidence suggests that polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and Bronchial asthma coexist thanks to their common pathogenicity route. Both PCOS and Bronchial asthma has been associated with chronic low grade inflammation which results in hormonal disparity.  One such case of a young woman with a medical history of Bronchial asthma presented with complaints of irregular menstrual cycle with amenorrhea and episodes of asthmatic attack once a month. The laboratory investigations including both blood and sonographic studies revealed the elevated absolute eosinophilic count, serum IgE and bilateral polycystic ovarian cyst. The Patient has been treated with internal medications and was advised to continue the physical activity such as walk for once a day and Pranayama (breathing exercise) as an adjunct to the treatment. After the treatment period of about 10 months, the outcome was assessed by both clinical prognosis as well as with USG report. The case study is about managing PCOS as well as bronchial asthma by Siddha therapeutic intervention and efficacy of the chosen drugs towards the ailments has also been explained with the help of preclinical studies conducted on the individual herbs of the formulation included in the study. This study could help to explore the therapeutic potential of Siddha medicine towards alleviating the low grade inflammation and hormonal imbalances associated with both Bronchial asthma as well as PCOS

    Comparative Pharmacognostic and Powder Microscopic Studies of the Bark of Four Ficus Species (Nalpamaram)

    Nalpamaram is widely used in traditional Ayurvedic system for the treatment of several ailments. It is very effective for the treatment of skin diseases like pigmentation, wrinkles and dark circles. This has a brown texture and a unique aroma. Nalpamaram is a mixture of four plant species of the family Moraceae - Ficus religiosa (Asvattha), Ficus benghalensis (Nyagrodha), Ficus racemosa (Udumbara) and Ficus microcarpa (Plaksah). The barks of the species are usually interchanged or adulterated with other species of Ficus because of the limited knowledge in identification and differentiation. Therefore, a detailed comparative pharmacognostic evaluation of the four species has been carried out with the aim to establish the diagnostic keys of these important drugs based on the pharmacognostic and powder macroscopic profiles. Pharmacognostic study of all these shows differences in values. Total ash is low in F. racemosa and high in F. benghalensis Acid insoluble ash is low in F. benghalensis and high in F. racemosa. Water soluble extractive is low in F. benghalensis and high in F. racemosa. Alcohol soluble extractive is low in F. benghalensis and high in F. racemosa.  Unique identification features like stone cells and prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate were found in the powder of all four species. The information from the present study provide data which is useful for the development of suitable monograph, determining the quality and purity of a crude drug and laying down Pharmacopoeia standards for Nalpamaram

    A Conceptual Study on Hridayavarnaka Karma of Gairika w.s.r to Hridroga

    Hridaya is the entity in the body which acts as a central beam that supports the framework of the body system. Gairika is a Uparasa Dravya. In twenty-four Vishopakrama, Hridayavarana is said to be done daily. The primary duty of the physician is to protect the heart. Hridayavarana refers to measures used to create a protective covering around the heart. Gairika is a Hridayavarana Dravya. An effort was made to collect references pertaining to Hridaya, Hridroga Hridayavarana and Gairika across Ayurveda texts like Charaka Samhita, Rasaratna Samucchaya etc. Hridaya is an important organ characterized as Siraja Sadhyopranahara Marma as well as one among the Pranayama. Any condition which manifests as a discomfort to heart is termed Hridroga. These terms Hridya conveys the notion of something that is favourable or beneficial for the heart. Gairika is a Parthiva Dravya classified in group of Bhoumadravya, Shonitastapana Deshamani, Uparasa, Suvarnadi and Upadhatu of Loha. Gunas of Gairika include Madhura rasa, Snigdha and Laghu Guna Tapahara, Sheeta veerya, Balya, Ropana, Raktashodhaka, Pittanashaka. It is indicated for Raktapitta, Daha, Chardhi, Vishahara, Hikka, Asungdhara, Netraroga, Udarda, Kandu, Vrana, Jwara. The Subhavita Shuddha Gairika is a Prashasta Bheshaja for Hridayavarana Upakrama on its qualities of being safe, effective and abundance
