Melanocyte degeneration has a connection to vitiligo, an acquired macular depigmentation disorder. It is thought to be brought on by cells\u27 autoimmune destruction of melanocytes. Frequently symmetrical, generalized vitiligo affects the hands, wrists, feet, knees, neck, as well as the skin around bodily orifices. According to Ayurveda all the skin diseases are categorized under the Kushtha Roga. In the classics Shwitra is mentioned under Kushtha Roga Chikitsa. Methodology: The 10-year-old male child, complaint of white discolored spots on his neck and left clavicle region; Shamana Chikitsa was used to cure the condition satisfactorily. Result: Patient showed encouraging result after Shamana Chikitsa, where subjective criteria evaluated using scoring method and objective criteria evaluated using VASI scoring method. Discussion: Patient was treated with Shamana Aushadhis, where white discolored patches turned to pinkish, and after that the patches turned into normal skin color. Subject was observed with 95% improvement in subjective criteria and VASI scoring improved from 0.25 to 0.10. Hence, the present case study highlights the importance of efficacy of Ayurvedic treatment in Shwitra, as mentioned in classics. Conclusion: Ayurvedic medicine\u27s effectiveness in curing Shwitra was confirmed by the current case study

An Insight into the Management of Amavata in Ayurveda

Acharya Madhavakara first identified Amavata as a separate disease in the Madhavanidana. Amavata manifests due to the consumption of Nidanas i.e., Viruddha Ahara-chesta, Mandagni, Nischalatha and immediate Vyayama after consuming Snigdha Bhojana. These factors resulting in Mandagni, which is a primary cause of Ama formation. This morbid Ama then circulates throughout the body with the vitiated Vata dosha. Ama eventually accumulates in the Sleshma sthana, results in joint pain, stiffness and ultimately causes Amavata. Comparable to rheumatoid arthritis due to similar symptoms. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease causing symmetric peripheral polyarthritis and joint damage. Affecting 0.8-1.0% of the Indian population, rheumatoid arthritis predominantly impacts females than males. A 23-year-old female patient was admitted with the chief complaint of pain in multiple joints for 5 years. This was associated with stiffness, swelling, loss of appetite, fatigue, hard stools and a feeling of heaviness in the body. Rheumatoid arthritis is managed by DMARDs and steroids but it has adverse effects of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease as well as renal function impairment. In Ayurveda details description of management of Amavata is mentioned. Considering the signs and symptoms, the patient was treated according to the treatment principles of Amavata. Langhana, Deepana-Pachana, Valuka Sweda, Anulomana, Vaitarana Basti were administered for 25 days and oral medications for 60 days. Before starting the treatment, grading was performed based on subjective and objective criteria. After treatment, the grade was reduced. Marked improvement was observed after the treatment, which also improved the quality of life

Hemorrhoidal disease, a prevalent benign anorectal disorder, has a substantial influence on patients\u27 quality of life and entails significant health and financial strains. The focus of this study is to evaluate the therapeutic value of Siddha medicine, Thantrikai Choornam, in alleviating first-degree internal hemorrhoids (Raththa Moolam). Method: A descriptive case series was carried out at the Government Siddha Medical College & Hospital in Palayamkottai, involving 20 patients (80% male, mean age 45.94±2.60 years) reported having bleeding hemorrhoids. Participants were prescribed Thantrikai Choornam (2 g, twice daily) for 24 days. Clinical symptoms such as bleeding, discomfort, constipation, and other parameters were graded both before and after treatment. Results: Substantial improvements were observed following treatment, with 75% of patients observing an overall decrease in bleeding severity from grade 3 to 0, along with a resolution of anal pain. Constipation alleviated for 85% of individuals. The average hemoglobin level raised from 11.88 to 12.25 g/dL. The statistical analysis demonstrated noteworthy reductions in the majority of complaints (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This case series illustrates that Thantrikai Choornam delivers a beneficial intervention for first-degree hemorrhoids, with considerable improvements in primary symptoms. The outcomes offer a call to further investigations into Siddha medicines role in contemporary therapeutic practices for managing hemorrhoidal disease

Amavata is a term from Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine from India. It describes a condition that resembles rheumatoid arthritis, where a person experiences joint pain, swelling and stiffness. The word Amavata comes from two words: “Ama” which means toxins and “Vata’’ which refers to one of the body’s fundamental energies, often associated with movements and wind. Early diagnosis and management of the disease is the only way to reduce the chances of deformities and morbidity caused by the disease. In Ayurveda a number of treatment modalities have been mentioned to treat Amavata. Panchkarma is very important and one of the eminent treatments explained in classical text. Current case study was done on female patient of 45 year with complaints of pain and inflammation in multiple joints (bilateral ankle joints, wrist joints). She was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 6 year ago. In this case study patient was given Shodhana therapy with Erandmooladi Niruha Basti and Prasarini Taila Anuvasana Basti along with Shamana Chikitsa (Bhasma Vati). The patient got marked relief from this treatment

    Phytoncide: Nature’s Antidote for Humanity

Nature is considered as a mighty healer for human beings since ages. It is undoubtful that Plants offers a plentiful reservoir of medicinal compounds. Among these, secondary metabolites are the phytochemicals produced as a result of protection against pathogens, herbivorous animals, and other environmental stress factors. Phytoncides are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) produced by the plants in order to protect themselves from bacteria, fungi, insects and other organisms and are released into the air, thereby forming a protective environment around the plant. These phytoncides which are mostly of isoprene origin has exhibited various pharmacological activities. Researches have found that forest bathing or prolonged exposure to forest volatile oils can have a profound impact on both physical and mental well being of humans. Since these chemicals act mainly by stimulating olfactory receptors and interacting with nasal mucous membranes, they can be considered similar to aromatherapy. Aromatherapy basically works through olfactory system as well as through dermal absorption. Both share some general health benefits like enhancing immunity by increasing NK cell activity and reducing the mental stress. Recently, many expert scientists around the world has developed new concepts like forest medicine and forest therapy, which may open up ways for in depth study of this topic

Menopause is the term for the natural and permanent cessation of monthly female reproductive cycles. Menopausal women are known to experience physical, psychological, and vasomotor symptoms. In Ayurveda, menopause is not mentioned separately or as a disease but it is considered as Rajakshaya, the transition period of body from predominance of Pittadosha to Vatadosha. Rajonivritti (menopause) occurring in Jarapakva Shareer (aged body) at the age of 50 years. In modern science, hormone therapy has been used to control the symptoms of menopause. But long term use of this therapy had an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, breast cancer etc. A lifestyle modification is therefore an essential component in reducing menopausal symptoms, which includes a healthy diet, physical exercise, stress reduction and weight management. In this study 25 subjects with menopausal symptoms between the age group of 45 to 55 years were selected, from OPD of Govt. Ayurveda College Hospital, Tripunithura, as per the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study subjects were advised to have two Yava saktu modakas of 10gm. each in morning at 7.30 a.m and the practice of Suryanamaskara and selected Pranayamas in the morning for 1 month. Assessment was done on 0th, 15th and 31st day of intervention. Along with this, the blood investigations like fasting blood sugar, post prandial blood sugar and serum cholesterol were assessed on 0th and 31st day of the study period. Results showed that Suryanamaskara, selected Pranayama and Yava saktu modaka have statistical significance in reducing menopausal symptoms
