Addressing the Aging Process Through the Ayurveda Lifestyle Interventions and Adaptations
The elderly population is growing worldwide, leading to an increased focus on geriatric care and promoting healthy aging. Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine, offers a holistic approach to healthcare that can be beneficial for addressing the unique needs of older adults. This research article explores the integration of geriatrics and Ayurveda, highlighting the potential benefits of Ayurvedic principles, lifestyle adaptations, and herbal remedies in geriatric care. By combining the wisdom of Ayurveda with modern geriatric practices, healthcare providers can offer comprehensive and personalized care to elderly individuals, enhancing their quality of life and promoting healthy aging. The field of geriatrics focuses on the healthcare needs of older adults, aiming to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being in the elderly population. This study focus on enhancing the concept of geriatrics through the principle of Ayurveda related to lifestyle management. To minimize the functional decline and to enhance the quality of life in geriatric age group through the incorporation of Ayurveda lifestyle adaptation is the main goal of this paper. Lifestyle diseases are related with the people’s way of living. This is generally caused by lack of physical activity and unhealthy food habits. A healthy lifestyle must be adapted to fight the various age related disorders and diseases. Ayurvedic principles of health and disease focus on the concept of three Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These are the three forces that determine the functioning of the body and mind. Although every person has all three Doshas, we will each inherit them differently. This is responsible for the differences in our characters, likes, dislikes, attitudes and behaviours
Pharmaceutical Standardization of Sharpunkha Kshar (Lavana): A Miraculous Hepatoprotective Drug
This study is ensuring the standard operative process (SOP) of Sharpunkha Kshar (Lavana) (alkaline extract of Tephrosia purpuria Linn.), as per classical text. It has hepato-protective effect. Many researches have been done on Sharpunkha extract but, no one work has been done on standardization of Sharpunkha Kshar (Lavana) yet. It was 1st mentioned by Acharya Bhavprakash in Gulma chikitsa prakaran by the name of Sharpunkha Lavana. During standardization of Sharpunkha Kshar (Lavana) raw drug authentication was done by microscopic and physico chemical analysis. lupeol, rutin, quercetin, rotenone and beta sitosterol biomarkers were screened in raw Sharpunkha panchang powder in HPTLC finger printing. Kshara was prepared by two different methods with 4 times (SPK-4) 6 times (SPK-6) water following standard protocols. Average 46.44% yield was obtained after drying of fresh Sharpunkha panchang. After burning of dry Sharpunkha average 5.03% ash was achieved. Average 16.3% Kshar yield in batch SK-4 and 16.6% Kshar yield in SK-6 was obtained. One more batch from residual ash was also prepared, 6.64% Kshar was obtained in it. Organoleptic, physico-chemical parameters were also done for both batch of Sharpunkha Kshar (Lavana). pH (12.65 & 13.35 in SK-4, SK-6 respective) carbonate, bicarbonates, Na (0.56 & 0.52%), and K (35.26, 35.41%) respectively present in batch SK-4 & SK-6
Ayurvedic Management of Primary Dysmenorrhea with Sapthasara Arka
Dysmenorrhea is one of the most common gynecological conditions that affect the quality of life of women. The incidence of primary dysmenorrhea of sufficient magnitude to cause pain with incapacitation is about 15–25%. Udavartha, one among the Vathika Yonirogas, characterized by painful menstruation and relief of symptoms after blood discharge; can be symptomatically correlated to primary dysmenorrhoea. Sapthasara Kashaya, mentioned in Chikitsa Manjari, is indicated in the Ruja of Yoni, Hrith, Kukshi, and Prushta. The drugs in the Sapthasara Kashaya are Vathakapha samana and Vatanulomana in action. Methodology: Here is a case report of an 18-year-old girl who presented with complaints of severe pain during menstruation, low back ache, nausea, vomiting, and giddiness for the past 2 years. Her USG reports were found to be normal and so were diagnosed as a case of primary dysmenorrhoea. The patient was given 24ml of Sapthasara Arka with the same amount of water orally twice daily, half an hour before food, for 60 days. The assessment was done on 0th, 30th, 60th, and 90th days using the Visual Analogue Scale and the Verbal Descriptive Scale. Result: Signs and symptoms were significantly reduced on the 30th day of treatment and they were absent on 60th day and 90th day of follow-up. Conclusion: In primary dysmenorrhoea, the administration of Sapthasara Arka was found to be effective
A Clinical Efficacy of Marma Chikitsa and Ayurvedic Intervention in Management of Ardhavbhedak (Migraine)
Migraine is a prevalent and disabling neurological disorder characterized by severe, unilateral headaches often accompanied by nausea, light sensitivity, and sound sensitivity. Migraine is estimated to be the second most prevalent brain disorder after anxiety, affecting nearly 41 million adults. In Ayurveda it is correlated with Ardhavabhedaka, one of the Shiroroga out of 11 mentioned by Acharya Sushruta. Ardhavabhedaka is a Tridoshaja Vyadhi. The present case study is subjected to assess the efficacy of Marma Chikitsa and Ayurveda treatment in management of Ardhavbhedak. A 27 years old female patient came to our institute with complaint of experiencing on-and-off frontal headaches, predominantly left-sided, accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Marma Chikitsa, Pathyadi kwath 20ml BD with equal amount of water, and Shadbindu Tail Nasya was given for 21 days. Marma Chikitsa is used for pain management, while Pathyadi Kwath is specifically indicated for Shiroroga in Shrangdhara Samhita and Nasya Karma is considered as the best therapeutic intervention in Shiro Roga by Acharya Charaka. After 21 days of Marma Chikitsa significant improvements were noticed in pain management, while Shadbindu Tail Nasya and Pathyadi kwath also relieve other symptoms, resulting in overall improvement in the patient’s condition
Management of Primary Dysmenorrhoea with Gandharvahastadi Kashayam
Menstruation pain is literally defined as dysmenorrhoea. It can cause lower abdominal pain and discomfort and usually happens right before or during the menstrual cycle. Primary dysmenorrhoea occurs frequently. It is the most common gynaecological issue affecting young women, especially those in their teens. According to Ayurveda, dysmenorrhoea and ailments like Udavartini Yonivyapad or kashtartava may be connected. Vata is prevalent in this Tridoshaja vyadhi. In addition to the disruption of Rasa Dhatu, there is an imbalance of Apana Vayu. In contemporary medicine, antispasmodics, analgesics, prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors, hormone treatment, and other medications are frequently used to treat primary dysmenorrhoea. In order to effectively reduce dysmenorrhoea, Ayurveda suggests adhering to Ritucharya and Dinacharya, as well as modifying food and practicing yoga on a regular basis, including Asanas, Pranayama, and meditation and the use of Samana aushada, which can reduce Vata along with Snehana (oleation), Swedana (sudation), and Vasti (enema). Ayurvedic medicine seeks to achieve Vatanulomana. Therefore, Ayurveda treats primary dysmenorrhoea with a more comprehensive approach
An Ayurvedic Approach in Secondary Infertility
Infertility is a major concern among the people of reproductive age due to various causes. This is a case study of an infertile couple who had not been able to conceive for 2 years and 8 months of unprotected sexual life and had a history of abortion. Patient was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). The objective of interventions included Ayurvedic management for abortion and ensuring nourishment of uterus and regular ovulation. This helps in facilitating healthy pregnancy and ensuring childbirth. Based on the parameters of Ayurveda, this case was diagnosed as Garbhasravi Vandhyatva (secondary infertility due to recurrent abortions). Treatment plan included both Shodhana (purification) followed by Uthara vasthi and Shamana (mitigation) therapies. The outcome of the Ayurvedic intervention was the conception of the patient after three courses of Ayurvedic treatments and was delivered with a healthy baby boy
A Review of Vasa (Adhatoda Vasica): Therapeutic Benefits and Formulations in Ayurveda
In today’s world, numerous old and emerging diseases lack adequate management approaches. Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine, provides fundamental principles for diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases. The objective of this study was to gather, analyze, and present information on the therapeutic properties and formulations of Vasa. A comprehensive review of classical Ayurvedic texts including Samhitas, Nighantus, and other relevant literature was conducted. Information on the synonyms, properties, actions, and formulations of Vasa was systematically organized. The review highlights therapeutic applications, dosage forms, and modes of administration as per different classical texts. Vasa (Adhatoda vasica) is a highly valued Ayurvedic herb, known for its therapeutic benefits, particularly in the treatment of respiratory disorders. It has been extensively referenced in classical texts for its therapeutic actions such as Kasahara, Shwashara, Shothahara, Hridya, Raktastambhan and Jwaraghna karma. Over 203 internal formulations and 38 external formulations featuring Vasa are documented across classical texts. These formulations help to manage various diseases like Kasa, Shwasa, Kushtha, Vatrakta and Raktapitta. In conclusion, Vasa is a critical Ayurvedic herb with broad applications, especially for respiratory ailments. Classical Ayurvedic texts provide extensive formulations for both internal and external uses, validated by modern pharmacological research particularly for coughs, asthma, fevers, and infections. While modern research has confirmed many of Vasa\u27s pharmacological activities outlined in Ayurveda, further scientific investigation is needed to fully validate its other therapeutic effects
Ayurveda in the Management of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common motor neuron disease and it is characterized by selective death of upper and lower motor neurons causing muscle atrophy, weakness and spasticity. As it is a fatal neurodegenerative disease, we can slow down the progression of symptoms through treatment. The present report deals with a case of ALS which can be correlated to Kapha avrutha vyana vata. Current paper is a case report of 47 year old female patient presented with the complaints of weakness and wasting of bilateral lower limb (Rt>Lt) since 20 years and weakness of bilateral upper limb (Rt>Lt) since 10 years and was diagnosed with progressive ALS. Aim of the study is to introduce an alternative therapeutic modality through Ayurveda which help to improve quality of life and delay the progress of disease. Patient had been treated with specific Panchakarma treatment modalities - Udwarthana, Acchasnehapana, Kukkudanda pinda sweda, Kayaseka, Mamsa pinda sweda, Musthadi Rajayapana vasti and specific Samana and Rasayana oushadis. The response of the patient’s condition to the treatment was assessed by ALSFRS -R Score. A substantial decrease in the intensity of symptoms was observed with a better quality of day to day activities. Thus, the treatment was found to be effective in managing the present ailment
Critical Review of Shadang Paneeya: An Ayurvedic Herbal Formulation with Potential Immunomodulatory and Therapeutic Benefits
Ayurveda, a time-honored system of medicine, is known for its holistic approach, incorporating dietary and medicinal practices to treat various ailments. Among its many formulations, Shadang Paneeya stands out for its therapeutic potential in managing fever, excessive thirst, and related symptoms. Described in classical texts like the Charaka Samhita, this preparation consists of six herbs with unique pharmacological properties that have been explored for immune modulation, detoxification, and managing febrile conditions. Objective: This review critically evaluates the components and therapeutic significance of Shadang Paneeya, focusing on its relevance in contemporary medicine, particularly its immune-modulatory and therapeutic properties. Methodology: A comprehensive review of classical Ayurvedic texts and modern literature on the immunomodulatory, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory effects of the ingredients in Shadang Paneeya- including Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Parpatak (Fumaria parviflora), Usheera (Vetiveria zizanoides), Chandana (Santalum album), Uddichya (Pavonia odorata), and Nagar (Zingiber officinale)- was conducted. Discussion & Conclusion: The synergistic effects of these six ingredients support Shadang Paneeya\u27s role in treating fever, dehydration, and inflammation. However, more clinical studies are needed to confirm its safety and efficacy, establishing it as a valuable adjunct in modern healthcare, particularly for viral infections
Molecular Docking Study of Boheco Desire (An Ayurvedic Proprietary Medicine)
BOHECO DESIRE is an Ayurvedic proprietary medicine formulated in capsule form, recommended for enhancing sexual health, libido, stamina, and energy. Objectives: This study aims to explore the molecular binding interactions of the major phytocompounds present in BOHECO DESIRE with a target protein and also to understand binding affinity and bioavailability, using advanced computational tools. Methodology: Molecular docking studies were performed using ChemDraw 20.1.1. Glide extra precision (XP) scoring tools were employed to calculate the docking scores. The binding energy of the receptor-phytoconstituent complexes was calculated using the Molecular Mechanics-Generalized Born Surface Area (MM-GBSA) method. Additionally, the QikProp module from Schrödinger was used to predict the ADME (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion) and physicochemical properties of the phytoconstituents. Results: Docking scores for L-DOPA, Cannabidiol, and Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol suggest strong binding affinity with the target protein 1XOJ, with scores ranging from -9.4 to -4.1 kcal/mol. The van der Waals energy (Glide evdw) between -42.5 and -24.11 kcal/mol indicates favorable ligand-protein interactions. Glide energy, which includes van der Waals, electrostatic, and solvation energies, ranged from -45.07 to -26.53 kcal/mol, reinforcing the potential for stable complexes. Binding free energy values (-76.6 to -35.73 kcal/mol) suggest energetically favorable interactions. ADME predictions showed high oral absorption for Withanolide A, Delta-9 THC, and Cannabidiol, with the highest Caco-2 permeability for Delta-9 THC. Conclusion: The phytoconstituents demonstrated a strong binding affinity with 1XOJ with favorable ADME profiles. This indicates that BOHECO DESIRE\u27s phytocompounds may have beneficial effects in sexual health
