    Bhavaprakasha Nighantu: A Comprehensive Review

    Get PDF
The Bhavaprakasha Nighantu is a significant Ayurvedic text that serves as a bridge between classical and evolving medical traditions. Authored by Bhavamishra in the 16th century, it is a vital part of Bhavaprakasha, one of the Laghutrayi (three minor Ayurvedic classics). The text is distinguished by its structured classification of medicinal substances into 23 Vargas (groups), covering plant-based, mineral, and animal-derived drugs, as well as dietary articles. Bhavamishra\u27s approach integrates traditional formulations with newly introduced drugs, influenced by Unani medicine and global trade, marking an important advancement in Ayurvedic Dravyaguna (pharmacology). A notable feature of Bhavaprakasha Nighantu is its detailed plant descriptions, including regional names, properties, actions, and therapeutic uses. Bhavamishra’s work also introduces concepts like Pratinidhi Dravya (substitute drugs) and emphasizes drug testing methodologies, ensuring standardization in Ayurvedic practice. His contributions significantly expanded the Ayurvedic Materia Medica, making his work a foundation for future research. The commentary by Dr. K.C. Chunekar further enhances the text’s relevance, providing botanical identification, pharmacological insights, and cross-referencing with modern science. Chunekar’s work aids in bridging Ayurveda with contemporary research, making Bhavaprakasha Nighantu a timeless reference for scholars, practitioners, and researchers. This review highlights the historical, pharmacological, and therapeutic significance of the text while underscoring its continued relevance in Ayurvedic medicine and modern botanical studies

Role of Panchakarma in Management of Cancer Patients

    Get PDF
Classical Ayurveda texts have several references to cancer. Charak and Sushrut Samhita described the equivalent of cancer as \u27Granthi\u27 (benign neoplasm) and \u27Arbuda\u27 (malignant neoplasm). Arbuda is the most accurate term for a cancerous malignancy. Gulma is referred to describe any palpable hard mass over abdomen which could be benign or malignant. In modern terminology, cancer is a group of malignant diseases with characteristics such as abnormal cell proliferation, lack of controlled growth, ability to spread to distant sites and evasion from natural cell death process. Treatment of cancer is based on excision, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunosuppressants. These treatments do provide benefits but also decreases the immunity leading to many side effects such as anaemia, loss of hair, recurrent infections, constipation, delirium, mental trauma, etc. Ayurveda explained that aggravated Vata and Pitta dosha by vitiating the Rakta, Mansa and Meda dhatu with the Kapha dosha gives rise to formation of round, knotty, elevated swelling. Removing these aggravated Doshas from the body through Shodhan karma is an effective method of treatment. Main aim of this article is to review the role of Panchakarma as an effective and supportive treatment as well as managing side effects of chemo-radio therapy. Basti karma used as a major therapeutic technique in combating cancer while other Panchakarma therapies plays a major role in management of significant cancers and eradicating all the side effects of chemo-radio therapy. Besides them, Yoga, Pranayama, Yagna therapy, meditation also helps in detoxifying the body thus improving quality of life

A Review Article on Hinguvadiagada in Vrichika Visha

    Get PDF
Agadatantra, a specialized branch of Ayurveda, focuses on the symptoms and management of poisons. Poisons are mainly classified into Sthavara and Jangama. Vrichika visha, a type of Keetavisha under Jangama visha, is known for its neurotoxic effects. The Ashtanga Hridaya Uttarasthana describes Hinguvadi Agada in the Keedaloothadi Visha Pratishedha Adhyaya as an effective formulation for managing Vrichika Visha. This simple herbomineral preparation includes Hingu, Haratala, and Matulunga and is administered in the form of Lepa and Anjana. Classical Ayurveda texts classify scorpions into three types based on the potency of their venom: Manda, Madya, and Mahavisha. While Lepa is effective for the local management of all three types of Vrichikadamsa, the Gutika-anjana form addresses systemic toxicity associated with Madya and Mahavisha types. The selection of ingredients in Hinguvadi Agada, especially Hingu and Matulunga, focuses on managing pain - a predominant symptom in scorpion stings. Acharya identified it as the best remedy for scorpion envenomation among the various available treatments due to its multidimensional pharmacological action. This article aims to explore the ingredients, preparation method, and probable pharmacological mechanisms of Hinguvadi Agada in neutralizing scorpion venom. Additionally, its possible applicability in managing other neurotoxic envenomations, such as cobra and krait bites, is discussed, highlighting its potential as a versatile antidotal yoga in Ayurvedic toxicology

    Get PDF
Palmoplantar psoriasis is a chronic dermatological condition that primarily affects the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, leading to significant functional disability. It is characterised by hyperkeratosis, scaling, and thickening of the skin. The condition may also involve painful fissures and bleeding. In this case study, an 83-year-old male patient presented to the Inpatient department (IPD) with complaints of blackened, thickened skin lesions, along with cracks, itching, scaling, and pain on both his feet and hands, lasting for the past three months. From the clinical presentation, the condition can be correlated with "Vipadika Kushta" in Ayurveda. The negative impact of palmoplantar psoriasis on the patient\u27s personal and social life is profound, as it severely hampers daily activities and mobility. While modern medicine mainly focuses on topical treatments, complete recovery is often not achievable. However, with the help of Ayurvedic treatment modalities, the patient experienced significant relief from pain and itching. Additionally, the cracks and discolouration of the skin improved considerably, showcasing the potential benefits of Ayurveda in managing such chronic conditions

    Get PDF
Pratishyaya, commonly correlated with allergic rhinitis in modern medicine, is a frequently encountered condition in children, often triggered by seasonal changes, environmental allergens, and compromised immunity. It presents with symptoms like sneezing, nasal discharge, nasal blockage, and headache, significantly affecting the child’s quality of life. Conventional treatments provide symptomatic relief but are often associated with side effects and recurrence. Ayurveda offers a holistic and safe approach through formulations that balance the Doshas, enhance immunity, and improve digestion. This case study evaluates the efficacy and safety of Gojivhadi Syrup, a classical Ayurvedic formulation, in the management of Vata-Kaphaja Pratishyaya in a 5-year-old male child with a history of recurrent rhinitis. The child presented with severe sneezing episodes (25–30/day), watery nasal discharge, nasal congestion, irritability, and disturbed sleep. Based on Ayurvedic principles and clinical examination, a diagnosis of Vata-Kaphaja Pratishyaya was made. The patient was administered Gojivhadi Syrup (5 ml thrice daily for 7 days). Significant clinical improvement was observed, with sneezing episodes reducing to 3–4/day, resolution of nasal congestion, and normalized laboratory parameters such as TLC, AEC, and ESR. No adverse effects were reported. The outcome suggests that Gojivhadi Syrup, with its Kapha-Vatahara, Deepana, Pachana, and Rasayana properties, can be a safe and effective remedy for allergic rhinitis in children. This case highlights the role of Ayurvedic management in pediatric respiratory disorders and encourages further research through large-scale clinical trials
