Changes in continental weathering regimes inhibited global marine deoxygenation during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum
International audienceThe moderate impact of rapid global warming on oceanic redox and biodiversity during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM; ~55.9 Ma) contrasts with other hyperthermal events in Earth's history, and remains mostly unexplained. Here, we use lithium isotope (δ7Li) proxy and Earth system model simulations to reconstruct continental weathering regimes during the PETM. Negative δ7 Li excursions of 3-4‰ in shallow-marine carbonates suggests globally increased erosion rates and decreased weathering intensities. Further, large negative δ7Li excursions of 4-5‰ in siliciclastic successions reflect enhanced accumulation of detrital clays exhumed from previous clay-rich sedimentary rocks, rather than those from weathering of igneous rocks. Changes in continental weathering regimes and associated flux of nutrients to oceans provide an explanation to the muted increase in oceanic anoxia and overall biodiversity loss during the PETM. The concomitant increases in physical erosion and clay delivery also enhanced organic carbon burial efficiency, permitting rapid return of global climate to pre-perturbation state
Among extreme climatic phenomena, intense precipitation events are a major global concern due to their likely increase in a warming atmosphere. This challenge is particularly critical in arid regions, where rainfall is infrequent but often severe. The Republic of Djibouti, in particular, is characterized by an arid climate combined with high rainfall variability, which fosters sudden flash floods with devastating impacts on populations and infrastructure. These consequences highlight the urgency of better understanding and anticipating current and future climatic disruptions to develop effective adaptation strategies. The frequency of intense precipitation events evolves geographically depending on the mechanisms that drive them, but these mechanisms remain largely unknown in Djibouti and its surrounding region. The main objectives of this thesis are thus to better understand the physical drivers of intense precipitation in Djibouti and to project their future evolution in a warming climate. The initial chapters investigate the atmospheric mechanisms behind intense precipitation in Djibouti at both fine local and synoptic scales. By combining in situ observations and satellite-derived estimates, a typology of rainy days was developed based on the spatial distribution and intensity of precipitation. Using ERA5 reanalysis data, the synoptic conditions associated with each type of rainy day were analyzed on a seasonal basis. These analyses revealed a diversity of rain-generating systems.During March-May, precipitation is predominantly driven by complex interactions between tropical and extratropical air masses, while July-September and October-November are more directly influenced by tropical circulation patterns and moisture convergence. At the local scale, the WRF model successfully simulated the key meteorological features of an observed intense precipitation event. The final chapters of the thesis focus on future projections of intense precipitation in the Northeast Africa and Arabian region, with a specific emphasis on the Republic of Djibouti. A preliminary evaluation of CMIP6 models showed that those with higher spatial resolution, which perform well at the regional scale, also perform well for Djibouti. Projections from the 10 selected models reveal a north-south differentiation in future changes to total precipitation during the January-February (JF) and March-May (MAM) seasons, with decreases in northern Arabia and moderate increases elsewhere, although uncertainties remain high, particularly for MAM. Conversely, the July-September (JJAS) and October-November-December (OND) seasons exhibit more significant positive changes with lower inter-model uncertainty. These increases in average precipitation are accompanied by a rise in the intensity and frequency of intense rainfall events. In Djibouti City, post-corrected projections indicate that the frequency of intense rainfall events causing floods could increase by a factor of 3.6 by the end of the 21st century.
Comparative law raises questions about the meaning, reasons, criteria, and extent to which “constitutional judges” can be considered illiberal. These questions lead us to examine the approach we take to constitutional justice. Can constitutional justice be understood in a neutral way, defining it essentially on the basis of a set of procedures and techniques, or do the liberal roots of constitutional justice require an axiological approach?

Biogeography after Permian/Triassic boundary crisis resulted from a complex combination of functional and dispersal mechanisms.
International audienceThe Permian/Triassic boundary (PTB) crisis represents one of the most severe mass extinction events, resulting in the extinction of over 80% of marine species. The subsequent biotic recovery during the Early Triassic was characterized by alternating phases of high and low taxonomic richness. This study investigates the macroecological processes that shaped biogeographical patterns during this recovery period by examining two marine nektonic groups: conodonts and ammonoids. Using an extensive database of species occurrences and advanced multivariate and network analyses, we identified distinct biogeographical units (biochores) and evaluated the relative influence of niche and dispersal processes on these patterns. Our results reveal that biogeographical structures evolved from longitudinal differentiation during the Griesbachian to latitudinal differentiation by the Spathian. Conodont biogeography was primarily influenced by functional constraints in the Griesbachian and by a combination of niche and dispersal constraints from the Dienerian to Spathian. In contrast, ammonoid biogeography was primarily dispersal-constrained during the Griesbachian and Spathian, and niche-constrained during the Smithian. This study highlights the importance of integrating macroecological theories to understand recovery dynamics of marine ecosystems after mass extinction events. Our findings suggest a complex interplay of biotic (ecological) and abiotic factors in driving the distribution of biodiversity after the PTB crisis. Conodonts and ammonoids were not driven by the same constraints and it may be due to a difference of sensitivity to abiotic parameters and environmental disturbances. By extending these methodologies to other taxonomic groups and other crises, future research may offer critical insights into the drivers of biodiversity’s distribution after a mass extinction
International audienceBased on a questionnaire administered to 180 SME managers, this article aims to see the link between stakeholders and the post-succession performance recorded by managers whose experiences and origins differ in a context where capital can be diluted or concentrated. The SEM-PLS approach was used, and the data processed with smartPLS3. Our results indicate that regardless of the origin of the succession, the capital structure and the manager’s experience, the involvement of stakeholders in strategic decisions does not impact on post-succession performance. The new leaders seek to act independently to carry out the strategic orientations of the companies taken over. Our results also show that stakeholders who succeed in participating in operational decision-making processes lead to a drop in post-succession performance, when the new managers do not hold most of the capital or if they come from outside or again when they are not experienced. The latter would have to exploit relations with their stakeholders to strengthen their legitimacy.
