    No full text
International audienceThis paper examines how coexistence with the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) has been conceived and experienced differently over time by local actors based on ethnographic data in two sites in France: the Vosges and Jura Mountains. It first explores interviewees’ perceptions of the Eurasian lynx in relation to other species. It then relates them to the historical context of the Eurasian lynx’s return and to the experiences of nature of each group of actors in the two study sites. Our study highlights significant divergences and convergences between actors’ and groups of actors’ conceptions of coexistence with the Eurasian lynx, with important implications for conservation strategies. Finally, we argue for a more pluralistic and emic approach to coexistence, considering the different ways in which coexistence is made possible by different actors.

Mental Fatigue in Older Adults: A Narrative Review of Subjective, Behavioral, Neurophysiological, and Physical Changes

    No full text
International audienceMental fatigue is a frequently reported symptom in older adults, affecting their daily functional abilities. It is a psychobiological state induced by prolonged or intense cognitive tasks, characterized by a subjective feeling of exhaustion and lack of energy. While mental fatigue effects are well-documented in young adults, its influence on older adults remains unclear. This narrative review investigated the effects of mental fatigue on subjective, behavioral, neurophysiological, and physical parameters in older people. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science and PsycINFO databases, and 28 studies met eligibility criteria. The results indicated that subjective mental fatigue increases after a mentally fatiguing task, regardless of task and duration. Meanwhile, behavioral performance evolution is relatively heterogeneous depending on the studies. Neuromuscular and neurophysiological results suggest an involvement of cortical mechanisms in the onset of mental fatigue, explaining either the decrease in physical or cognitive performance or the emergence of compensatory strategies related to aging. Mental fatigue affects postural balance by increasing postural sway and altering gait biomechanics, especially during dual-tasking, without significantly impacting functional tests such as the Timed Up and Go or the 6-min Walking Test. Observed changes in brain activity suggest a slowing of information processing in older adults, contrasting with a more pronounced cognitive disengagement in young adults after fatigue tasks. These results highlight the importance of studying the neurophysiological mechanisms of mental fatigue in older adults, and mitigation strategies, such as physical and cognitive training, to limit mental fatigue effects in this population

Le traitement du trauma entre langue in fieri et langue in esse : approche psycholinguistique néoténique

This research lies at the intersection of linguistic neoteny, psycholinguistics, and discourse analysis. It is part of a broader reflection on the effects of language appropriation on the ability to express a traumatic experience. Linguistic neoteny, defined as the theory of the unfinished speaker (Bajrić, 2013), is founded on the dichotomy between facts of language and facts of appropriation, and posits that the “additive” appropriation of a language affects both cognition and the speaker’s identity. Consequently, not every language mobilized entails the same level of subjective investment or expressive potential. From this perspective, the present thesis examines verbal and nonverbal variations observable in bilingual traumatic narratives produced by the same speaker in two distinct languages: one defined as in esse language, the other as in fieri language (Bajrić, 2013; Bajrić & Monin, 2024). The study is based on two audiovisual corpora in French, Italian, and English, consisting of interviews conducted in two stages: a narration phase, during which participants recount the same event in both languages, followed by a metalinguistic exchange designed to elicit the speaker’s perceptions depending on the language mobilized. The approach adopted is resolutely multimodal: it combines the joint analysis of verbal, nonverbal, and metareflexive productions within an integrated framework. Two main tools were employed: the SPLIT-10 grid (Auxéméry & Gayraud, 2020, 2021) and the NV-SPLIT-10 grid (Paniz, forthcoming). These tools were coupled with a series of multimodal annotation and textometric analysis software (ELAN, Praat, TXM, etc.), enabling synchronized coding of linguistic, prosodic, and mimic-gestural dimensions. The results show a broadly stable tendency among speakers mobilizing one in esse language and one in fieri: narratives in in esse language exhibit a higher density of verbal and nonverbal markers, whereas those in in fieri are characterized by an attenuation of such indices. This variation may be interpreted as the differentiated expression of the cognitive relationship at play between the subject and the language mobilized. Conversely, among speakers mobilizing two in esse languages, the tendencies are more heterogeneous. In these cases, parameters such as the language of mnemonic encoding or the biographical distribution of languages appear to modulate expression.By articulating the tools of psycholinguistics with the theoretical framework of linguistic neoteny, this research proposes a modelization of the expressive dynamics observable in bilingual trauma narratives, considering the differentiated relationships that a speaker maintains with the languages of their repertoire.
