Investigating the Effect of Using Educational Podcasts on Listening Comprehension of Language Learners
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of using educational podcasts on listening comprehension of male language learners in Tehran. The statistical population of the present study consisted of all male language learners of Tehran language colleges who were studying in the academic year 2020-2019. The present study sample consisted of two target languages that were selected purposefully. There were 60 samples, of which 30 were in the control group and 30 in the experimental group. The type of research was quantitative and quasi-experimental with pre-test-post-test design with control group. To understand the required data, a researcher-made audit comprehension test was used. It was used to analyze the obtained data using SPSS software. The results showed that the use of educational podcasts is significantly more effective in increasing the listening comprehension skills of language learners of language schools F = 165/001 than the usual method. Based on the results, it is recommended to use educational podcasts in teaching audio-visual comprehension of learners, which is one of the main problems in language teaching
Schooling Process: Is Schooling Experience and Its Outcome the Same for Girls and Boys?
The study examined if schooling experience and teacher’s classroom interaction is the same for senior secondary school adolescent girls and boys in Jigawa state, Nigeria. It also determined whether influence of students’ perceived level of personalisation of the teacher’s classroom behaviour and environment exist on their participation in the classroom learning activities. These were with a view to improving the teacher-student’s relationships and teacher’s classroom effectiveness. The study adopted a survey design. The population consisted of all male and female students in public Senior Secondary Schools in Jigawa state. The sample consisted of 370 Senior Secondary Classes Three (SS III) students. Of this number, 185 were boys and 185 were girls selected through stratified sampling procedure using sex as stratum. Their average age was 15.17 years. A self-developed instrument was used to collect relevant data in the study. Data collected were analysed using Independent t-test statistical method. The results showed that teachers do not significantly interact with girls and boys in the same manner in the classroom. However, there existed a significant influence of students’ perceived level of personalisation of the teacher’s classroom behaviour on their participation in the classroom learning activities. Also, there was a significant influence of students’ perceived level of personalisation of the classroom environment on their participation in the classroom learning activities. It was concluded that schooling experience is not the same for girls and boys respectively. Thus, appropriate interventionist strategies should be put in place to assist realising the objective of equal educational opportunity
Exploring the Dynamic Interplay between Note-taking Strategies and Reading Comprehension Performance of Moroccan EFL Students: A Quasi-Experimental Study
Recently, at Moroccan tertiary level and in the area of student practices, little attention has been brought particularly to the skill of note-taking and active reading comprehension, and an insightful and in-depth understanding of how students learn from lectures could presumably be valuable in understanding and unravelling the intricacies of possible positive results of their note-taking behavior. The current study focuses mainly on the instruction of students into the systems of note-taking and how that affects their level of reading comprehension. Therefore, the effort reported here attempts to assess the students’ current systems of notetaking and how they contribute to reach a full understanding of reading comprehension texts. The participants were 94 Semester-One students at the department of the English Studies at Ibn Tofail University, School of Arts and Humanities in Kénitra, Morocco. The data of the present study were collected by means of a TOEFL iBT Reading Practice comprehension test (i.e., post-test), and strategy training equating note-taking schemas and reading comprehension texts. The findings have showcased that after having been instructed through many sessions of note-taking, students felt that their process of reading comprehension is enhanced as they were able to organize their ideas and information from the text, stay focused and engaged while reading, and keep a record of reading material to use it later. This is solid proof that they critically used and retained what they read
Teacher’s Experience and Beliefs: Teaching English by Integrating Web-based Learning
Recently, the science and technology improvement has contributed to the improvement in language teaching and learning. There are many various technologies that can be used for teaching and learning English. One of them is web-based learning. However, not all the teachers know how to integrate technology in their teaching process. This study wants to delve deeper understanding into how an English teacher’s beliefs and experience towards web-based learning in English teaching learning process. A narrative inquiry study was conducted towards the participant who has used web-based learning for language teaching and learning at a non-formal school. The teacher’s lesson plans and interview were used for collecting the data. The data were coded and analyzed using Thematic Analysis Single Case Study. The result of this study showed that the participant has positive beliefs toward web-based learning for teaching and learning English

The Factors Impede Teachers’ Effective Use of Audio Visual Materials to Teach English Speaking Skills: ABBA PASCAL Girls’ School in Focus, Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia
The purpose of this study was to explore factors impede teachers’ effective use of AVMs to teach ESS at Abba Pascal Girls’ School. The subjects used were 2 English teachers of grades 5, 6, 7 & 8 and sampled students. The grades had 2 sections that encompassed 50 students each. Convenience & systematic sampling techniques were employed to select the school & 32 informants among the population of 400. To get the exact number of the participants which are 4 of each section, the researchers divided the population’s number of the sections into the numbers of each student’s representation accordingly: 50÷4 = 12.5. Thus, every Nth participant was selected systematically according to their attendance lists. Therefore, 4 informants from each section were taken in the intention of the researchers. Both the teachers were directly taken as participants due to the manageable number of entire population. Then, the researchers employed mixed research approach after collecting data through questionnaire, interview & classroom observation. Quantitative data were analyzed in percentages; while qualitative were thematically organized & categorized in a statement form. Conclusion & recommendations were forwarded based on the findings. The findings are learning ESS using AVMs benefit teachers & students. Conversely, the challenges drawback teachers’ effective use of AVMs were underpinned in categories of, the challenges related to classroom, gadgets, teachers & students. Therefore, stakeholders of the school should facilitate technical training sessions for teachers & consider the class size. Finally, the windows of the classrooms should be painted with non-translucent paints
The Benefit of Utilizing E-Government Based Public Services
The aim of this article to research government efforts in the implementation of bureaucracy reform as stipulated in the law No. 25 of 2009 about public services related to the service to its residents with quality service standards, fast, easy, affordable and be measured. It is in accordance with Presidential Instruction No. 3 of 2003 about national policy on e- Government development. In its development, e-Government is still far from expectations, government institutions both in the center and the region do not yet consider the important e-Government. E-Government is considered a project and a one of the sub-districts in Medan that has been conducting bureaucracy reform by providing public services based on electronic (e-kecamatan) in managing Administration and Increase Community participation. This study uses qualitative research methods with the type of descriptive research. The results showed the success of public services electronic-based public services in Kecamatan Medan Barat had a prerequisite, namely (1) the support from the District Leadership (Camat), (2) availability of Financial Resources and Human Resources (3) Transparency In the public service process with application system. In addition, e-kecamatan based momentarily trend. Kecamatan Medan barat where the research will be done services facilitate the residents to obtain information and manage various purposes in the form of administrative services products
Developing ESP Blended Learning for Academic Purposes of Course Materials for Students of English Education Study Program at Languages and Arts Faculty, Universitas Negeri Medan
Industrial Revolution 4.0 has influenced many sectors, which are now a lot changes entering to human life by the presence of information technology.The use of power and data in the massive digital technology has become unlimited caused by its development at this present time. This study is aimed at developing the appropriate blended course materials of English for Specific Purposes for students of English Education Study Program, Languages and Arts Faculty, Universitas Negeri Medan. This study is focused on ESP Blended Learning Course Materials for Students of Seventh Semester of English Education Study Program. Research and Development (R & D) design is applied through six stages, there are 1). collecting information and data, 2). data analysis, 3). new materials design based on the needs analysis, 4). experts validation, 5). new material revision, and 6). final product. The instruments of collecting data are by applying two strategies: interview and questionnaires. The results show that the materials used in the 7th semester of English Education Study Program is developed through the implementation of the R&D simplification. The response of questionnaires signified low standard for the students after being analyzed. This results of the study developed ESP Blended Learning Course materials which focused on the following materials: Models and Teaching Strategies in ESP; Language Features: Linguistics and Grammar; Language Skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing); Genre Text in ESP (Descriptive Text, Procedure Text, Analytical Exposition Text, and Argumentative Text)
An Analysis of Land Use Succession and Property Value in Ile-Ife, Nigeria
Land use succession systems have played a crucial role in cities transformation, evading and mitigating the adverse impacts on property value and unplanned development. However, such developments were not aimed at ensuring orderly spatial development which is consistent with land use and sustainable development. This study determined the trends in properties values between the year 2002 and 2016 and examined the relationship between rental values and types of Land Use Succession (LUS) in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. This was to provide information that could enhance property investment decision.
Both primary and secondary data were used for the study. Primary data were obtained through the use of the questionnaire. This was administered to landlords, Estate Surveyors and Valuers and on the official of Ife Central Town Planning and Land Services Department. Data were collected from the respondents on the three major roads where LUS was prevalent. Four hundred and fifty buildings were identified out of which 50% were selected. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as trend analysis and Analysis of variance (ANOVA).
The result showed that residential properties increased by 42.2% while commercial property increased by 57.8% between the year 2002 and 2016. The result also showed a significant statistical relationship between properties values and types of LUS with corresponding P-values of 0.000, 0.000 and 0.019 for residential-commercial, residential cum commercial and residential-religion types of LUS respectively. The study concluded that an increase in rental value as a result of LUS is capable of enhancing property investment decision
Predictors of Violence among Drug Abusers in Selected Drug Joints in Mushin, Lagos Metropolis
The prevailing incidence of illicit drug intake among youths in Nigeria is alarming and undermines developmental structure of the society locally and internationally. All over the world today, cases of Illicit drug consumptions by the Nigeria youths has gained its momentum toward negative directions and its impact has degenerated to series of anti-behavioural problems such as trauma, larceny, egocentric suicide, cybercrime, kidnapping, laziness, terrorism, murdered cases, poor manpower supply and retrogressive national and international images among other nations in the world. Extant publications were reviewed for the study in line with broken theory by Keilling and Wilsons were also adopted for the justification of the inquiry. Mixed method and cross section Survey design and Yemane Yaro formula was adopted to select the 400 respondent for the quantitative inquiry but 245 questionnaires were found useful for the study while 10 in-depth interviews were carried out among the participants. The Chi-square result deciphers that youth access to illicit drug (X2)= 56.750a; p< 0.005.) Cost of purchasing of drug (X2)= 59.598a, p< 0.005.) and nature of employment (X2)=46.611, p<0.005.) of youths has significant relationship with violent behaviour. It is advisable youths to avoid joining drug related gangs; Nigeria Government should be willing to provide basic amenities for the youths so as to reduce violent activities in Nigeri
