Northern Catandunganon Men and Women Speakers in Focus: Investigating Angry Registers
Get PDFAngry Registers (ARs) are evident in situations where they are used, such as when someone is angry. This study endeavored to examine the characteristics and functions of angry registers in the discourse of 90 participants (45 men and 45 women) from four municipalities of Northern Catanduanes region in Bicol, Philippines. The data collection was ensured through the use of observation sheets and follow-up interviews. The investigation is grounded on the perspectives of Speech Register Theory, and is quantitative-qualitative in nature. Findings revealed that there are 26 angry registers used; 14 from male and 19 from female speakers. These ARs are classified as nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Noun ARs are related to body parts, person, animals, and inanimate objects. Verb ARs prompt an action or movement or imply a threat. Adjectival ARs are all words that negatively describe a person usually associated to female attributes. Participants also are not merely user of one AR in their utterance as instances of two ARs combined are applied. Further, results specified that the primary functions of speaking ARs across genders are the desire to release the feelings of anger and frustrations, to emphasize emotional reactions to others and to express intense emotion without offending others. Generally, women are more likely than men in using these angry registers in discourse
Development of Student Worksheet based on STEM to Improve the Critical Thinking Skills
Get PDFBased on the results of observations, it shows that the development of student worksheets is not optimal, especially in science learning with water cycle material which should be adapted to developments in the 21st century, as science learning is fun learning if it is created well. The 21st century requires students to have various skills, one of which is critical thinking skills. because students are required to be more responsive in analyzing, solving problems and solving problems in the learning process. The aim of this research is to develop and determine the feasibility of STEM-based student worksheets with water cycle material for fifth grade elementary school students. This research method is Research and Development (R&D), which is a research method used to develop or validate products used in education and learning. The results of the research show that the process of developing student worksheets to train critical thinking skills consists of three stages, namely preliminary study, product development, and test the product. The student worksheets were validated by three expert validators, namely design expert validation, material expert and language expert with respective scores of 84.37%, 94% and 91.42% with very feasible criteria. So, it can be concluded that this STEM-based student worksheets with water cycle material is suitable for use as a learning companion for students to improve students' critical thinking skills

The Needs Analysis in Developing Case Method Model to Improve Students Translation Achievement in Translation in Language Teaching Subject
Get PDFThe aim of this study is finding the Needs of the English Education students in studying the Translation in Language Teaching Subject at Universitas Negeri Medan. Qualitative research method using case study was utilized to depict a phenomenon on students' needs in learning Translation in Language Teaching Subject involving 60 English Education Students. The data was gathered through the use of questionnaires and interviews. Data were analyzed using the need analysis approaches by Hutchinson and Waters (1987) ; (1) wants (2) lacks, and (3) needs. The findings of the study revealed the students wants collaborative, cooperative, creative, communicative and problems solving activitis. They also stated their lack of knowledge and skills in translation vocabulary, in strategies of translation and translating subject areas. They need practice in translating words, idioms, collocation, cultural term and various genre.These need analysis results will be utilized for developing case method model of teaching in Trsnslation in English Langauge Teaching Subjec
Restoration Program Effect through Conservation of Mangrove Forest in Kwala Gebang Village, Gebang Sub-District, Langkat District
Get PDFThe restoration program aims to provide assistance to coastal communities in preserving mangrove forests and at the same time provide knowledge to the community about the importance of mangroves and the benefits that can be obtained from mangrove plants, so that mangroves can also help improve the socio-economic development of the community. The data collection techniques used in research are observation, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique used in this research is descriptive qualitative, used to analyze and systematically process facts obtained from the field assisted by frequency tables. The limit of this research especially analyzed the effects of the socio-economy. The economic impact cannot be separated from activities involving the community starting from clearing land, searching for seeds, nurseries, planting and maintenance. The amount of work done by group members determines the results or income they will obtain. From the results of the data in the field, apart from the social impact that fosters concern for mangrove preservation and mutual cooperation created from togetherness in groups, it can also be seen that the influence of restoration activities on the economy is the involvement of farmer group members, most of whom are involved in seeding and planting. Work is carried out in groups, especially for planting. If you look at the highest income obtained from restoration activities, it is around IDR 401,000 – IDR 500,000 per activity and this is only obtained by 1 person (head of the farmer group), and the majority earn IDR 201,000 – IDR 300,000 (43.47%)
Development of Student Worksheets Based Project Based Learning to Improve High-Level Thinking Skills (Hots) on Magnetic Material
Get PDFThis study aims to develop LKPD based project-based learning to improve the validity of high-level, practical, and effective high-thinking skill. Learning products that are developed in the form of Students worksheets based on project learning. This type of research is the development of research and development (R&D) using the 4-D development model that developed by Thiagarajan. Data collected using expert validation, observation sheet, questionnaire response learners and teachers, and high-level thinking skills test. The results showed that LKPD based project- based learning in the valid and worthy category in use, the results of the validation of the material experts in stage I dan II are equal 76,47 % and 84% included into a very valid category, on the validation of the design expert design I and II is equal 81% dan 97% included in a very valid category, then on validation of language experts in stage I and II 62,50% and 90,62% located in a very valid category. LKPD based project-based learning has fulfilled aspects of effectiveness look at the various tests that have been done and declare that LKPD worth to use
The Choices in Translating Song that Emma Heesters Used when Translating the Lyrics

The study was conducted by using a content analysis research. The data of this study were taken from the lyrics of “Melukis Senja”, “Maafkan Aku”, and “Cuek”. The data of this study were the translated lyrics songs that appeared in “Melukis Senja”, “Maafkan Aku”, and “Cuek” songs. The data analysis was taken by observing, take notes, make a table the data based on the theory proposed by Franzon and Low. There are four kinds of translating choices techniques found in Emma Heesters covered lyrics. The result of analysis for each kind of translation choices were: Leaving the song untranslated, there were 1, Writing new lyrics but not taking the music into account, there were 8, Translating the lyrics and adapting the music accordingly, there were 26, and Adapting the translation to the original music, there were 22

The teacher has implemented 3 stages of using DRTA strategy in teaching reading recount text, Before Reading: predicting, While reading: silent reading, After reading: confirming predictions. But in the prediction stage, the teacher did not guide the students to activate their previous knowledge
Promoting Affordable Housing in Enhancing the Inclusiveness of Housing Policy
Get PDFAffordable housing has been debated among scholars as the tool used by various governments to address the issue of escalating housing prices in the open market segment. A lot of schemes, programs, and initiatives have been introduced by the State Government of Sarawak to increase the supply of affordable housing to be accessed by the public. However, there is no sign that the increase in housing market prices slowing down, and a lot of people still do not have access to public housing schemes. This paper focuses on the discussion of this issue in Sarawak. Besides, it also aims to measure the effectiveness and inclusiveness of the housing policy to resolve the housing scenario faced by the public. A qualitative method was used to collect data. Among the issues discussed in this study are the impact of government intervention in the open market, public-private sector partnership, and commitment of the financial institution. This study should be beneficial for the state government to capture the real issue of affordable housing in the state and be able to develop a more holistic and realistic housing policy in the future
The Use of Deixis in Students’ Writing of Descriptive Texts
Get PDFThis study aims to identify the types of deixis, and the deixis used, and to analyze the reason deixis used in the students’ writing descriptive text at the tenth grade MIA 2 high school Kemala Bhayangkari Medan. This research used descriptive qualitative research where the participants were 20 students who took English class. The result of this research showed five types of deixis, how the deixis are used, and the reason deixis is used in their writing using Levinson's theory (1983). Five types of deixis are spatial deixis, temporal deixis, person deixis, social deixis, and discourse deixis. From 20 total data, the researcher found 186 deictic words in the students’ writing. 84 or 45% in the spatial deixis, 40 or 22% in the person deixis, 25 or 13% in the temporal deixis, 22 or 12% in the discourse deixis, and 15 or 8% in the social deixis. Therefore, the reasons students used deixis are: to Indicate a specific location, chronology of events, to convey a personal point of view, to incorporate cultural and social signifiers, and to create a strong and coherent connection
From The Viewpoints of Afghan University Lecturers, Using the Communicative Language Teaching Method to Teach and Learn English Language
Get PDFInvestigating how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructors at Afghan public universities felt about the application of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) was the aim of this study. The study used a quantitative research design that included a survey questionnaire. The survey questionnaire was completed by fifty Afghan EFL instructors, and the results were evaluated using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, and frequency). Overall, the findings demonstrated that CLT is seen well by Afghan EFL instructors. The most favourable opinions regarding the role of students in CLT were displayed, suggesting that students firmly think that learners have a crucial role in putting CLT into practice. The role of quality/quantity of error-correction had the lowest mean. The overall findings showed that the Afghan EFL lecturers have positive perceptions about. Future research should be done, according to this study, to learn more about the opinions of Afghan EFL lecturers at both public and private universities. Teachers, students, and policymakers should all take note of the current findings. Curriculum revisions are implemented by policymakers to align with the nation's adoption of CLT
