    Chlorophyll-a variability during upwelling events in the south-eastern Baltic Sea and in the Curonian Lagoon from satellite observations /

    Based on the analysis of multispectral satellite data, this work demonstrates the influence of coastal upwelling on the variability of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration in the south-eastern Baltic (SEB) Sea and in the Curonian Lagoon. The analysis of sea surface temperature (SST) data acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard Aqua/Terra satellites, together with Chl-a maps from Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) onboard Envisat, shows a significant decrease of up to 40–50% in Chl-a concentration in the upwelling zone. This results from the offshore Ekman transport of more productive surface waters, which are replaced by cold and less-productive waters from deeper layers. Due to an active interaction between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon which are connected through the Klaipeda Strait, coastal upwelling in the SEB also influences the hydrobiological conditions of the adjacent lagoon. During upwelling inflows, SST drops by approximately 2–8 °C, while Chl-a concentration becomes 2–4 times lower than in pre-upwelling conditions. The joint analysis of remotely sensed Chl-a and SST data reveals that the upwelling-driven reduction in Chl-a concentration leads to the temporary improvement of water quality in terms of Chl-a in the coastal zone and in the hyper-eutrophic Curonian Lagoon. This study demonstrates the benefits of multi-spectral satellite data for upscaling coastal processes and monitoring the environmental status of the Baltic Sea and its largest estuarine lagoon

    The authors of the article analyze the currently particularly relevant topic – quality management of the vocational training process in Lithuanian vocational schools. Presents theoretical analysis of quality management in vocational schools and research data are. A total of 628 survey participants (240 teachers, 340 students and 48 school leaders) were interviewed during the study. During the research, 3 vocational schools from each region of Lithuania (Marijampolė and Alytus, Utena, Panevėžys, Šiauliai, Telšiai and Tauragė, Klaipėda, Kaunas, Vilnius) were selected by random sampling method. The obtained results are sufficiently relevant for vocational education schools in organizing the teaching process and guaranteeing the quality of this process

    Laboratory experiments have indicated that tench (Tinca tinca) is an effective predator of Potamopyrgus antipodarum. However, few P. antipodarum have been found in the gastrointestinal tracts of wild caught benthivorous fishes, including tench. This had led to the assumption that the shell properties of the snail act against native predators. In general, it has been predicted that this is due to P. antipodarum possessing a thicker shell and a lower amount of soft tissues than native snails; the latter will thus be preferred by benthivorous fishes. In the current study, shell-crushing resistance and the soft tissue mass / shell mass ratio were compared between the non-native P. antipodarum and three native species. Results indicated a similar shell-crushing resistance for P. antipodarum relative to the native Bithynia tentaculata, the latter of which is a common food object in tench diet. However, the soft tissue mass / shell mass ratio of the invader was significantly lower than in most of the studied native snails, indicating a lower amount of soft tissues in P. antipodarum

    Connection between nurses’ emotional intelligence and work-related distress.

    Emotional intelligence in the practical work of nurses is the dominating factor for the existence and comprehension of emotions as well as the maintenance of essential human relations. Emotional intelligence works as a mediator of stress and satisfaction with life enabling emotionally intelligent nurses to experience lower level of both burnout and somatic complaints as well as reduce negative impact of distress. The aim of this research – to analyse the connections between emotional intelligence and the distress experienced at work. Research methodology. Quantitative research has been accomplished with the questionnaire used as an instrument. For the analysis of data, SPSS 23.0 for Windows software package has been applied with the sample consisting of 321 nurses. This research has been fulfilled following the ethics principles. Research results. It has been determined that personal emotional competence of nurses has been considerably higher compared to the interpersonal one. Nurses have evaluated the comprehension and management of their own emotions significantly higher than the comprehension and management of emotions belonging to others; however, they have recognised other people’s emotions more successfully than their own ones. Higher work positions occupied by nurses have shown the link with greater interpersonal emotional competence as well as with more successful management of emotions belonging to others. When evaluating the total emotional intelligence and its competences negative connections with work experience and age have been identified, whereas the nurses with higher education have demonstrated considerably higher rates. The distress symptoms within nurses met most frequently are: fatigue, sleep disorders, anxiety, pain, difficulty in concentration or remembering things. Lower level of emotional intelligence has been related mostly with the symptoms of depression and anxiety, whereas, while evaluating the connections between separate competences in emotional intelligence and the intensity of expression in distress symptoms, the most significant negative links have been determined with personal emotional competence and the majority of distress symptoms: anxiety, sleep disorders, difficulty in concentration/remembering things, depression, numbness/tingling. Conclusion. Lower personal emotional competence is related to the expression of distress symptoms of higher intensity. Key words: emotional intelligence, distress, nurses

    Effects of dolphin-assisted therapy on individuals with mental and behavioral disorders.

    The aim of the research - to evaluate the effects of DAT as a complex rehabilitation on individuals with mental and behavioral disorders. Objectives of the research: 1) To evaluate the changes in motor functions before and after the complex rehabilitation. 2) To identify changes in sensory systems before and after the application of complex rehabilitation. 3) To summarize the changes in the psychoemotional state before and after the application of complex rehabilitation. Object of research: Changes in motor functions, sensory integration and psychoemotional state of persons with mental and behavioral disorders. Research Hypothesis: DAT will have a positive effect on individuals with mental and behavioral disorders. Methods of research: analysis of scientific literature, testing, questionnaire survey, experiment, statistical data analysis. Conclusions: 1) An improvement in the subjects balance assessments was observed, standing on one leg with the eyes open (right p = 0.001, left p = 0.009), standing one foot in front of the other (p = 0.009). Improvement of motor functions, in the results of statements about subjects (buttons, zipper fastening 6%, cutlery control 9%), motor planning (ideation stage). 2) The positive effect of DAT on reflex integration was found, the evaluations of Babinsky and gallant reflexes were statistically significant at p = 0.003. Decreased irritability to external and internal stimuli was found on average 14 to 22 percent. It is concluded that DAT has a positive effect on individuals with mental and behavioral disorders by helping to overcome fears, reducing episodes of stereotypical / self-stimulating actions, developing sensory systems, and proper analysis of received impulses. 3) Noted significant improvements in concentration of attention (19%), enhanced social functions (tolerance of different surfaces 21%, daily organization 24%, assessment of possible risk 6%). It is concluded that DAT together with sensory integration has a positive effect on the psychoemotional state and social skills of the subjects through the proper reception and use of new information. The hypothesis of the study confirmed that by applying the methodology of sensory integration in combination with dolphin-assisted therapy, the first positive changes in sensory systems can be recorded as soon as after 16 sessions

    This study presents an internationally (cross-border) representative picture of the school environment, atmosphere and action taken by schools aiming at the involvement of students in their actions. The study was conducted within the framework of the CaSYPoT project (Capacity Building for Strategic Youth Policy and Transnational Cooperation) under the Interreg South Baltic Programme 2014-2020 (Project No STHB.05.01.00-SE-0024/15). The main aim of the CaSYPot project was to encourage young people to get involved in local democracy, and to present youth as a resource in the development of society. Furthermore, for the design and implementation of the southern Baltic youth strategy, it is important to gain an insight into the current situation regarding the environment in schools. One section of this survey was addressed to the situation of youth in schools. The international survey for the CaSYPoT project was conducted among 1,593 students, in six towns in the southern Baltic region, in Sweden, Poland, Russia and Lithuania, from April to June 2017. The project partner’s towns carried out a survey on teenagers aged 16 to 19, identifying their needs and problems in school, and providing comparable data. The questionnaire contained questions addressing young people’s well-being and atmosphere of safety, the climate at school, and their experience in getting involved in the work of the school and their influence on decision making. To sum up, the study describes the current situation in schools, which is essential for the development and evaluation of future policies and actions. The survey covers a wide range of student opinions on school, and begins with a summary of the key findings drawn from an analysis of the survey, and strategic recommendations for the future

    Exploration of the underwater landscape in Lithuanian waters, in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea, allowed identification of trees stumps in growth position, peat sediments, and traces of people that were living in the now flooded landscape. The exploration has been concentrated on localisation of the former Early Holocene coasts. Based on new data about sediment layers of the Preboreal–Atlantis I, palynological and dendrohronological analysis, identified vegetation species, and dating of wood and peat samples by radiocarbon methods the Baltic Sea water level dynamics during the stages Yoldia Sea–Early Litorina Sea could be identified. There are traces of the eroded coasts of the Yoldia Sea at a depth of 39– 43 m, which were also observed at depths of 44 and 47 m. During the Ancylus Lake transgression, the RF‐I lagoons and small lakes with the peat layer and the surrounding forests were submerged. The water level could have even risen to 10–9 m below present sea level. The water drop during the Ancylus Lake regression is evidenced by a peat layer dated to 9,150–8,520 cal BP, and similar radiocarbon dating of an oak stump. The changes of the species composition of trees are indicative of the noticeable climate changes during the period 11,410– 7,900 cal BP. Litorina transgression is marked by a tree stump found at a depth of 14.5 m dated to 7,900–7,660 cal BP. The preference of the Early Holocene population to the coastal zone is evidenced by poles driven into the seabed (one was dated to 9,510–9,460 cal BP) that were detected at a depth of 11 m and the T‐shaped antler axes dated to the Early Neolithic, washed ashore from the Litorina Sea coastal Stone Age settlements

    The thesis evaluates the socio-economic attractiveness of Lithuanian municipalities. Theoretical part analyzes the attractiveness of areas for residents, tourists and investors and the underlying socio-economic factors. The empirical part examines the attractiveness of Lithuanian municipalities using average migration, tourism and investment rates. Grouping municipalities by attractiveness reveals their differences and the underlying socio-economic reasons. Recommendations on reduction of municipal attractiveness issues are provided
