    Corded ware and contemporary hunter-gatherer pottery from Southeast Lithuania: Technological insights through geochemical and mineralogical approaches /

    A geochemical and mineralogical approach was used to analyze 3rd millennium BCE pottery from Southeast Lithuania that is attributed to the foreign Corded Ware Culture and local hunter-gatherers. SEM-EDS, XRF, XRD, and FTIR were used to study the peculiarities of the pottery and to develop hypotheses about the raw material and technology choices present. The amounts of ten major elements in the bulk and clay matrix compositions (XRF, SEM-EDS) and eleven trace analytes in the bulk compositions (XRF) were compared with the Clarke values and tested to highlight the significance (Mann–Whitney U and Wilcoxon Matched Pairs Tests) of the differences in the elemental quantities between the clay matrix and bulk compositions, and between the lighter and darker clay matrixes. These also revealed the advantage of Ward’s clustering method using the City-block distance of bulk compositions as a tool for inter-correlating ceramics in attributing them to specific communities and locations. The XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDS mineralogical analyses indicated a predominance of iron-rich illite clay, quartz, and alkali feldspar, in addition to very low to medium firing temperatures.     A DMST-based tool to establish the best aspect ratio, solidity and rotational speed for tidal turbines in real sea conditions /

    A Double Multiple Stream Tube (DMST) routine to predict the performance of cross-flow hydrokinetic turbines in real environments is presented, along with a site assessment application to identify the most efficient turbine aspect ratio, solidity and configuration (single, or paired) for a selected area of the Northern Adriatic Sea. The peculiarity of this DMST tool is its 3D character, since it allows to reproduce the vertical distribution of the torque generated by the turbine. To this end, correlations for fluid dynamic phenomena, based on high-fidelity fully CFD simulations, were implemented. The marine circulation code SHYFEM is adopted to obtain velocity profiles for a half lunar cycle period. The sites with the highest mean kinetic power were identified. The DMST routine is equipped with an iterative process able to establish which rotational speed maximizes the power output. Indeed, a spatially non-uniform velocity profile requires to determine the flow velocity more suitable to obtain the rotational speed via Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) definition. To this end, the section of the blades working at optimal TSR varies from top to bottom, until the maximum power is reached. It works as a virtual Maximum Power Point Tracking system able to adapt the turbine operating conditions for the different turbine geometries, and for changes in flow conditions. The results show that for the case study, the performance curve shape influences the optimal TSR blade section: the latter is often located in the upper part of the turbine for the low solidity, whereas, for high solidity turbines, in the bottom half part

    This article analyses the concept of hospital resilience to natural disasters (earthquakes, global warming, pandemics, and man-made disasters such as war, conflict and cyber-attacks) in the context of theoretical insights in scholarly articles on the concept of resilience, and elements of its perception and other aspects. The research conducted identified that the concept of a resilient hospital encompasses its ability to maintain functionality at minimal resource costs, and reduce the likelihood of shock in the event of various disasters. This capacity to withstand hazard can be of various types, for example, constructive, infrastructural or administrative. The following four elements are most commonly identified levels of resilience: context, disturbance, capacity to deal with disturbance, and reaction to disturbance. A resilient hospital maintains the following characteristics: rapidity, robustness, redundancy, resourcefulness, awareness, diversity, self-regulation, unity and adaptiveness. A variety of means are used to amplify resilience to distinct disasters and it is relevant to manage different types of resilience, but the human factor is indisputably essential in this framework

    Bycatch, or the incidental capture of non-target species in fisheries, has been identified as one of the major threats affecting seabird populations worldwide. In the Baltic Sea, a globally important area for wintering seabirds, bycatch in gillnets represents an important cause of human-induced mortality for seabird species whose populations have declined significantly in recent decades. Although countries are required by European law to report official bycatch data, a lack of data on bycatch in small-scale fisheries impedes an assessment of the contribution of bycatch to declines of seabird populations. This study presents data on the total seabird bycatch in the small-scale coastal fishery for an entire country, Lithuania, in the southeastern Baltic Sea, during the 2015–2020 winter period. An average of 19.3% of the total fishing effort in net-meter days (15.5% of fishing days) were observed each winter season, resulting in observations of 909 bycaught birds from 15 species. Two species composed two-thirds of the total bycatch, Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis; 42.1%) and Velvet Scoter (Melanitta fusca; 35.4%). Bycatch composition varied with depth, with the majority of bycatch occurring in nets set at depths ≤ 10 m. Adult males dominated the bycatch of benthivorous sea ducks, whereas adult females composed the majority of piscivorous birds caught. Low numbers of juveniles in the bycatch may indicate different wintering sites for young birds. We estimate that between 1500 and 3000 seabirds were bycaught annually in the Lithuanian small-scale coastal fishery in the 2015–2020 period. Because this number is orders of magnitude larger than the bycatch officially reported by the Lithuanian authorities (six birds), our study highlights deficiencies in the country’s current bycatch reporting. In contrast to official statistics based on inadequate data, the unintended capture of seabirds in gillnets remains high, despite financial investments to minimize the impact of fisheries on biodiversity

    The article analyses sustainable economic development of EU countries according to the sustainable development goals (SDGs), by using indices of integrated sustainable development and environmental footprint. Sustainable economic initiatives can be driven by economic, environmental and social aspects, applying principles of innovation and knowledge. However, development requires skills, human and financial resources; in turn, it increases productivity, efficiency, competitiveness, profit, and promotes a better working environment. In general, sustainable business initiatives contribute to SDGs and reduce the environmental footprint. The scientific problem is how to develop a sustainable economy while ensuring the achievement of SDGs and at the same time reducing the environmental footprint. The object of the scientific research is the evaluation of sustainable economic development through the analysis of integrated sustainable development indicators. The aim of the research is, upon the evaluation of SDGs and environmental footprint indices as well as the analysis of the integrated sustainable development indicator, to identify the opportunities for sustainable economic development in the EU countries. The research has been carried out by analysing the scientific literature, and applying SDGs and environmental footprint methodology to calculate individual and integrated sustainable development indices. The results have shown that despite the disparity of SDG indices, the overall value of the integrated sustainable development indicator is distributed quite evenly among the EU countries. The impacts from each of the SDG indices range from 11% to 31% but the environmental footprint index has the greatest impact on the sustainable development of a country—up to 31%

    The expression of innovation is captured in increasingly diverse processes. Both technological and non-technological innovations are applied. This is because tourism businesses need to adapt to changing market conditions and to offer a new generation of modern services. Qualitative changes in tourism activities due to the availability of technology for the general public also lead to an increasing degree of self-service when organising a trip, which inevitably affects changes in the number of jobs created by tourism and the distribution of income in tourism and tourism-related industries. By treating the current stage of tourism globalization as a stage of globalization based on information dissemination and image engineering, where countries compete for the efficiency of information dissemination, it is important to objectively assess the extent to which tourism innovativeness enhances the economic benefits of tourism. The aim of the research is to evaluate the economic impact caused by tourism innovativeness on the basis of the latest trends in the expression of tourism innovativeness.     Submerged macrophytes are essential elements of sublittoral ecosystems to maintain a diverse fish fauna. The aim of this study was to assess juvenile fish associated with macrophyte habitats in the Curonian Lagoon by means of modified pop net method. We focused on two dominant littoral habitats with different structure (pondweed and charophyte stands). The pop nets sampling was carried out on two study sites located in the freshwater and oligohaline part of the lagoon in July and September 2019-2020. Our upgraded pop nets reduced the risk of under sampling and are recommended for monitoring fishes since this method has relatively low disturbance on fish behavior and on the habitat itself. The most efficient time of sampling with pop nets in shallow macrophyte habitats is at night, where at least 4 samples collected are sufficient to represent the biggest part (> 70%) of the fish assemblage, but the sampling covering different times of day is recommended. In total, 14 juvenile species were recorded, where perch and European roach dominated (respectively 48% and 24%). Half of the species (8) were associated with macrophyte stands, although water salinity and temperature were the most important factors explaining the variance of fish abundance followed by the sampling time and the biomass of macrophytes. Based on the abundance and the duration of species within these habitats, European roach, nine-spined and three-spined stickleback were mainly associated with the pondweed biomass and stands, while spined loach, round goby, perch, ruffe and gudgeon were mainly associated with the charophyte biomass and stands. The increase of charophyte stands since 2005 affected the fish assemblage where it should have enhanced the abundance of perch, ruffe, spined loach and partly round goby

    In an ever-changing world, the goals of education and the expectations of education policy makers, society and parents for the education system are also changing. Pre-school educational institutions need teachers with professional excellence and leadership skills who are constantly improving their competencies. In this context, the management of a teacher’s career is becoming a particularly important issue. In the management of a teacher’s career, not only the motivation of the teacher himself but also the role of the headmaster is very important in creating conditions and providing opportunities for the development of a teacher’s career. The article reveals the attitude of headmasters in pre-school educational institutions to the possibilities of pedagogue career management. It presents the results of qualitative research (interviews with headmasters in pre-school institutions), which revealed that headmasters understand the importance of teachers’ career management both for the teacher himself and for the quality of the institution’s activities. Some headmasters take care of a teacher’s career, creating conditions for improving competencies, and providing financial and psychological support. However, not all headmasters in pre-school institutions create favourable conditions for the development of a teacher’s career by delegating this function to the teacher himself

    The article focuses on the issue of the education of returned emigré pupils. A progymnasium is part of the Lithuanian system, a general education institution (grades 1 to 8), an intermediate link between primary school and a gymnasium, which differs from basic schools in the higher quality of the activities and the created added value. A quantitative study was conducted: 106 progymnasium teachers working with returned emigré pupils took part. The research revealed that individual plans were made for returned emigré pupils in progymnasiums, and school education specialists (psychologists, social pedagogues, etc) assisted them during the adaptation period. For the teachers working with returned emigré pupils, the competences of recognising their diverse abilities and the management of (information) technology were especially important. Additional formal (Lithuanian language and literature, mathematics) and informal activities, the development of the digitalised content of education, cooperation, and the dissemination of best practices created the preconditions for the streamlining of the education of returned emigré pupils in progymnasiums

    Water circulation and transport time scales in the Beagle Channel, southernmost tip of South America /

    The Beagle Channel is a long and narrow interoceanic passage within the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the southernmost tip of South America. A high-resolution 3D hydrodynamic model based on the finite elements method was applied to investigate the residual circulation, water fluxes and transport time scales inside this channel. Numerical solutions were analyzed at seasonal time scale and the model results compared with observed ocean data. The circulation pattern is characterized by a west-to-east residual flow with low intensity and low seasonal variability. The water fluxes through the channel were estimated to be, on average, around 12,700 m3/s, with inflow through its western entrance and eastwards outflow mainly through the Mackinlay Strait. The water residence times vary seasonally with basin averages between 36 and 43 days and maximum values between 53 and 95 days. The results provide an overview of the hydrodynamics and water residence times in the Beagle Channel, a unique ecosystem threatened by recent anthropogenic pressures and climate change
