    The significance of “green” skills and competencies making the transition towards the “greener” economy /

    Climate change and environmental deterioration have been recognized as global drivers of change, and the shift to the “greener” economy is the key to sustainable development. The green economy is a priority field for developing and developed economies. However, as the authors of the publication have realised, there is no consensus about the meaning of the green economy and “green” jobs, that is why an uncertainty as in measurement of economic trends and an impact of it, as well as in what skills and competencies should be assigned to the “green” ones, arises. The new “green” processes and technologies are arising in a progressive trend, that is why it is important to ensure there are properly skilled candidates with appropriate “green” skills and competencies on the labour market, as well as to prepare fresh graduates with the “green” skills that will meet requirement of both, the recent and the future companies, especially operating in the “green” sector. In the framework of “SB Bridge” project an online survey was conducted by interviewing the “green” companies to identify which skills and competencies are needed for “green” jobs recently, and whether candidates and fresh graduates are enough with the “green” skills and competencies for fruitful engagement to “green” jobs. As the survey identified, fresh graduates and candidates for “green” jobs lack technical and (or) mechanical knowledge, IT skills, as well as experience and ability to work independently and in the team to resolve arising problems

It presents an analytical review of articles, reviews, and the first monograph, as well as diaries, memoirs and notes of contemporaries, allowing us to consider Bely against the background of the era, and to identify features of his religious and poetic consciousness

    The dissertation is based on the current context, the growing influence of information warfare technologies in mediated politics in recent years. Because of mediatization, social media is used as a tool in information warfare to interact between society and the media. This dissertation can be considered as a directional line to investigate and evaluate the role of social media in the implementation of the modern war - the information war in Germany. Germany has been chosen because it is the EU leader, has a large Russian-speaking community and close business ties with Russia, leading to a major information war campaign to influence society and politicians. There are many examples in Germany of Russia using information warfare, so the results obtained can be used in other countries' practices in combating Russia's information warfare. Russia is interested in showing its power in Germany in shaping consumer opinion in order to influence EU-wide policy. The study reveals why such information technologies are used and how Russia manages to influence other societies and their politicians. The study provides visual and textual examples, applied methods and strategy in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The means of information warfare carried out by Russia and the methods of mediated policy will be useful for researchers, communication specialists, politicians and the public in order to identify misleading information and better understand the principles of operation

    Prototype framework for deep learning driven semantic segmentation of Arctic seabed imagery /

    The reliable mapping of the Arctic seabed is a prerequisite for marine spatial planning and environmental management. Underwater imagery (UWI) is one of the most common methods for mapping the seabed. The main advantage of this method is its simplicity, which enables rapid and cost-effective collection of large amounts of data. However, only a small part of information from UWI archives is being used due to labor-intensive and time-consuming effort, often requiring expert knowledge. Thanks to progress in deep learning (DL) methods, with convolutional neural networks demonstrating state-of-the-art in semantic segmentation tasks, new opportunities for automated large-scale analysis of seabed images have emerged. Although some tools exist for intermediate steps, multi-disciplinary teams still lack a unified framework, which could provide fast and reliable semantic segmentation and automate quantitative measurements for classes of interest. To address this issue, we present a prototype segmentation framework tested on the UWI imagery material collected from the upper subtidal zone of central Spitsbergen, Arctic. The system consists of two main layers: a user-friendly web front-end, based on industry leading React framework, and a back-end, relying on TensorFlow Serving API, responsible for managing and serving of DL models. A pilot experiment was conducted using two large 2D mosaics of a seabed transect, stitched from UWI video material, containing 3 classes — pebbles, tube dwelling polychaetes, and Ophiuroidea. Mosaic-based 2-fold cross-validation results revealed a high overlap between ground truth and predicted masks according to similarity coefficients — Dice of 0.86 and 0.84 as well as Jaccard of 0.77 and 0.72 for binary (Ophiuroidea detection) and multiclass segmentation tasks, respectively. Effective, accurate and fast segmentation of the seabed mosaic can be achieved if sufficient training annotations are available for the DL model. Further development is envisaged to enable tweaking capabilities for segmentation results as the post-processing phase

    Analysis of graduating nursing students’ moral courage in six European countries /

    Background: Moral courage is defined as courage to act according to one’s own ethical values and principles even at the risk of negative consequences for the individual. In a complex nursing practice, ethical considerations are integral. Moral courage is needed throughout nurses’ career. Aim: To analyse graduating nursing students’ moral courage and the factors associated with it in six European countries. Research design: A cross-sectional design, using a structured questionnaire, as part of a larger international ProCompNurse study. In the questionnaire, moral courage was assessed with a single question (visual analogue scale 0–100), the questionnaire also covered several background variables. Participants and research context: The sample comprised graduating nursing students (n = 1796) from all participating countries. To get a comprehensive view about graduating nursing students’ moral courage, the views of nurse managers (n = 538) and patients (n = 1327) from the same units in which the graduating nursing students practised were also explored, with parallel questionnaires. Ethical considerations: Ethical approvals and research permissions were obtained according to national standards in every country and all participants gave their informed consent. Results: The mean of graduating nursing students’ self-assessed moral courage was 77.8 (standard deviation 17.0; on a 0–100 scale), with statistically significant differences between countries. Higher moral courage was associated with many factors, especially the level of professional competence. The managers assessed the graduating nursing students’ moral courage lower (66.5; standard deviation 18.4) and the patients slightly higher (80.6; standard deviation 19.4) than the graduating nursing students themselves. Discussion and conclusions: In all countries, the graduating nursing students’ moral courage was assessed as rather high, with differences between countries and populations. These differences and associations between moral courage and ethics education require further research

    Behavioural diversity study in bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) groups and its implications for welfare assessments /

    In the recent past, animal welfare studies have tried to determine the best animal welfare measures and indicators. Expression of behavioural diversity is considered a potential positive welfare indicator, and to the authors’ knowledge, it has not been validated nor studied in cetaceans. For the first time, a behavioural diversity study on bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) groups was conducted at six European facilities. The study was carried out by the animal care staff, biologists and veterinarians and included 54 dolphins housed in several group compositions at the different participating facilities. The goal of our study was to analyse behavioural diversity in bottlenose dolphins at the group level to investigate how particular factors might impact the diversity of behaviours within the group and to discuss its implications for dolphin welfare assessments. Eight factors (i.e., “observer location”, “number of individuals”, “age class”, “sex”, “social grouping”, “presence/absence of leading male”, “presence/absence of visitors” and “enrichment provision”) impacted the behavioural diversity of the observed groups, while no significant impact of the factors “time of day” and “activity before/after observation” could be found. Our study showed the feasibility of this kind of approach for cetaceans under professional care and the relevance to considering this parameter in dolphin welfare studies, despite certain limitations that warrant further research

    Characteristics of distance work organization in SMEs during the COVID-19 lockdown: case of western Lithuania region /

    The article is based on the findings of the applied research project Assessment of the Effectiveness of COVID-19-Related Restrictions on Economic Activity and the Impact of State Intervention Measures on Enterprises in the Klaipėda Region (No. P-COV-20-51). The aim of the research is to reveal the characteristics of distance work in small and medium business enterprises of Klaipėda Region in the context of COVID-19. The main research question focuses on how the variety of work activities be realized in distance way and to what extent is it effective? To identify the situation, a mixed research methodology, quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (focus group) research methods were used. 73 business entities participated in the survey, and 7 focus group discussions were organised remotely in 7 municipalities, with the participation of 61 respondents (on average, 8 in each group). The research findings revealed that the problems of distance work in SME‘s were generally an under-researched topic, and the definition and concept of distance work varied. Problems emerged that could be divided into two subgroups: the first related to the IT infrastructure(a shortage of equipment, Internet disruption and the resulting increased costs), while the second subgroup concerned mainly human factors (the issues of employees' communication skills and attitudes or emotions when working remotely, lack of methodology for organising distance work, etc.). It is worth adding that, in the course of the current research, identification of a broader field of problems and discussions of their causes were possible due to the cooperation of researchers-representatives of various scientific areas

    Parametric analysis of the combustion cycle of a diesel engine for operation on natural gas /

    The publication research task is related to one of the solution aspects in reference to decarbonization of transport by transferring the operation of diesel engines to natural gas. The results of converted diesel engines into operation with dual-fuel (D-NG) without significant constructive modifications are focused on forecasting the energy efficiency parameters of in-service engine models and evaluation of the reserves improvement. This paper presents energy efficiency parameters and characteristics of the combustion cycle methodological optimization of high-speed 79.5/95.5 mm diesel engine with a conventional fuel injection system. Interrelations between the indicated efficiency (ηi), combustion cycle performance parameters (excess air ratio (α), compression ratio (ε), degree of pressure increase in the cylinder (λ), maximum cycle pressure (pmax), air pressure (pk), air temperature (Tk) after compression, etc.), and heat release characteristics were determined and researched. Directions of the optimization when the engines were operating in a wide range of load (pmi) modes were also obtained: the low energy efficiency in the low-load mode were due to reduced heat release dynamics (combustion time increased up to 200° CA). The main influencing factors for ηi were the pilot-injection portion phase (φinj) and α, optimization of ε was inefficient. To avoid exceeding the permissible limits of reliability for pmax, the realized reserve of ηi increase was estimated as 10%. Methodological tools for the practical application of parametric analysis to the conversion of diesel to dual-fuel operation have been developed and adapted in the form of a numerical modeling algorithm, which was presented in nomogram form. For improvement of initial energy parameters for a specific engine models heat release characteristics identification, accurate methods must be used. The proposed methodology is seen as a theoretical tool for a dual-fuel conversion models for in-service engines and has benefit of a practical use of a fast application in the industrial field
