Constructed floating wetlands made of natural materials as habitats in eutrophicated coastal lagoons in the Southern Baltic Sea /

    No full text
Eutrophication remains an environmental challenge in lagoons along the Southern Baltic Sea. Floating islands planted with emergent macrophytes are an option to remove nutrients from eutrophicated waters. Furthermore, floating wetlands offer other ecosystem services such as the provision of habitats. Numerous scientific studies have been conducted; however most remain on the laboratory scale. This research explores the challenges associated with installations in coastal environments and focuses on sustainability of the island design, the habitat function as well as nutrient removal. Most floating wetland designs use polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane or polyvinyl alcohol foam to ensure the buoyancy. For this study an artificial polymer free island design was developed and tested. The floating constructions in the Darss-Zingst-Bodden-Chain were planted with native macrophytes which have the potential to act as ‘biodiversity-supplements’ to the adjacent coastal wetlands: Bolboschoenus maritimus, Carex acutiformis, Iris pseudacorus, Juncus effesus, Lythrum salicaria, Schoenoplectus lacustris, Typha latifolia. The chosen macrophytes survived fluctuating salinities. After three months the above-ground biomass was harvested and analyzed for the nutrient concentrations. Phosphorus concentrations were highest in L. salicaria and nitrogen in I. pseudacorus. Video monitoring and field observations were applied in order to observe animals. Birds did not use the floating wetlands as breeding grounds, but the grey heron (Ardea cinerea) was a common visitor for foraging. Especially surprising was the large amount of juvenile eels (Anguilla anguilla). A diverse and large root network below the floating islands boosts not only nutrient removal but serves as a shelter and refuge for fish such as the endangered eel

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the role of Šiauliai City Municipality in the regional governance. The regional governance is a relatively new concept that is also significant due to the fact that the population of municipalities have easier access to a local government and, thus, a greater chance to be heard. Problems related to a region are better solved when a person is able to contact the interested parties and receive direct aid. The regional governance and institutions related to the regional governance are indisputably regulated by legislation. It is especially important to identify fundamental problems in the regional governance and possible solutions to them. On the regional level, the interested parties that play the more prominent role are the local and the central government with business and other organizations, including various non-governmental ones, also playing important role. The analysis in this thesis is divided into two parts, in order to achieve the results. The first part contains the analysis of decisions made by Šiauliai Regional Development Council and their connection to the regional governance and Šiauliai region. The analysis shows that the Municipality is actively engaged in the decision-making process by Regional Development Council by offering solutions, in order to ensure that important issues related to the region are discussed. The second part concerns the research whose results confirm the conclusions made from the analysis of Regional Development Council documents that Šiauliai City Municipality is actively involved in the regional governance and plays a significant role in both the issue-raising and the decision-making process. In addition, attention is paid to the cooperation between the interested parties and Šiauliai City Municipality with the results of the interview showing the lack of purposeful cooperation and communication between both sides, the lack of willingness on the part of the Municipality to cooperate and the lack of involvement of the interested parties in the activities of the Municipality

Research background. Work environment of health care professionals is a very important factor having an impact on their health and quality of life. Health care professionals’ experiences psychosocial risk factors such as stress, long working hours, high requirements, patient violence and deaths, working in shifts, etc. Work-rest regime disbalance cause stress in employees, burnout, and deterioration of health. Not all nurses are able to deal with permanent pressure and stress at work therefore the possibility of unwanted health problems arise. The aim. To analyze the impact of work environment factors on health of nurses. Methods. 121 nurses were surveyed in hospitals. The prepared research instruments were used: working experience measurement scale (WEMS) and salutogenic health indicator scale (SHIS). Results. Health of nurses were evaluated by “Salutogenic health indicator scale”. The total health indicator average in a general research participant group was 60.96 points, interpersonal health indicators in groups equaled 59.81 points, and interactive – 62.58 points. Communication with other people (4.38 points), determination (4.27 points), maintaining emotional balance (4,20 points) were best rated; the worst results were for sleep (3.74 points), relaxation (3.82 points) and energy (3.85 points). The working experience scale showed best results of accessibility towards manager, manager’s ability to make decisions in need; the worst results were of a manager consultation with a working group before making important decisions. Conclusion. It is stated that work experience showed a connection with better evaluation of health and wellbeing. The total health indicator was significantly worse for the participants with a longer work experience thus they evaluated interpersonal and interactive health indicators worse in comparison to other participants. Younger nurses evaluated changes in an organization more positively, however management area was evaluated more positively by nurses with longer work experience

    No full text
The objective is to present the means of implementing innovations in the ambulance station. Research hypothesis - when assessing the possibilities of implementing innovations in the ambulance station, the opinion of employees on the analyzed issue is not taken into account, employees have too little information about the implemented innovations and the importance of its needs, the motivation system does not work. Tasks: 1) to describe the implementation of innovations in the field of services in a theoretical aspect; 2) to present the characteristics of Kaunas City Ambulance Station and the innovations recently introduced in it; 3) after analyzing the opinions of employees, to provide recommendations on the issues of innovation implementation. Research methodologies. Analysis of scientific sources and internal documents of the institution. To achieve the research goal, the quantitative research type was selected questionnaire by online survey, the data of which were processed by MS Exel 2016 program and the analysis of qualitative research semi-structured interviews: categories and subcategories based on informants' experiences. Data from this study were analyzed using Content Analysis. Conclusions. It was found that the main problems of innovation implementation are the diversity of services provided and the lack of knowledge and cooperation of employees in the institution. A theoretical model of innovation implementation has been developed, which is based on the research. The analysis of the institution revealed that in recent years it has implemented such innovative solutions as the establishment of cluster brigades, the establishment of audit unit, reorganization of GMPS dispatching activities, and others. The main problems of innovation implementation that affect the smooth implementation of processes were identified: insufficient provision of information on implementation to employees, lack of motivation and encouragement to submit proposals and participate in implementation processes, lack of communication, and non-response to employees' comments on innovation implementation and application activities. Possible measures to improve innovation have been identified, such as the introduction of employee pay linked to the implementation and use of innovation, the detailed presentation of a career innovation perspective plan, increasing communication between departments and individual employees, the introduction of other motivation, and incentive measures
