A Room of One’s Own’s French Afterlives: Translation, Edition, Iconisation

    No full text
International audienceVirginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own was first translated into French by Clara Malraux, under the title Une chambre à soi, in the early 1950s. For six decades that translation remained the only one accessible to French readers. The 2010s, however, marked a crucial turning point in A Room of One’s Own’s French reception, as Woolf’s landmark feminist essay was translated no less than four times in about ten years (Une pièce bien à soi, trans. Élise Argaud, 2012; Une chambre à soi, trans. Jean-Yves Cotté, 2016; Un lieu à soi, trans. Marie Darrieussecq, 2016; Une chambre à soi, trans. Sophie Chiari, 2020). This chapter offers to explore the reception of A Room of One’s Own in France by retracing the history of its translations while examining the political and societal contexts in which these translations were published. It also explores the multiple editions of these texts and how their paratexts either build up Woolf as a feminist thinker and A Room of One’s Own as a feminist pamphlet, or reject this ‘versioning’ of Woolf and of her essay. Finally, it delineates the essay’s progressive French iconisation and examines its presence in the French cultural imaginary and in the French literary and political landscapes

This dissertation investigates ceramic manufacturing processes in the Arabian Peninsula between the 1st and 15th centuries, focusing on production contexts rather than finished products through a systematic analysis of workshop structures and organization. By examining «chaînes opératoires alongside» artisanal infrastructures and integrating socio-economic and environmental dimensions, the research reconstructs the complexity of technical and organizational processes within workshops. Drawing on three major archaeological sites — Thāj, al-Yamāmah, and Qalhāt — and a comparative ethnoarchaeological approach, the study highlights the diversity of artisanal practices and their continuous evolution in response to social and economic transformations. Methodologically, the use of digital tools (photogrammetry, databases, GIS) has been crucial for renewing the spatial and functional analysis of workshops. This interdisciplinary approach addresses a historiographical gap in the study of artisanal societies in ancient and medieval Arabia and opens new avenues for research into the interactions between technical systems and social actors.

When social networks polarize: On the number of clusters in the Hegselmann-Krause model

Documents de travail du Centre d'Economie de la Sorbonne 2025.18 - ISSN : 1955-611X - eISSN : 2968-6687In the present paper, we study opinion dynamics in a social network, where individuals only listen to those with opinion not farther away than a given threshold from their own opinion (known as bounded confidence models, proposed by Hegselmann and Krause). It is well known that in bounded confidence models consensus does not always exist, and that agents split in clusters (polarization), with convergence to consensus in each cluster. We are precisely interested in the effect of bounded confidence on polarization in the network. Our main focus concerns the formation of clusters and their number, as well as its non-monotonicity with respect to the value of the threshold. First, a framework with a finite number of agents is considered. We study analytically disintegration of various types of opinion chains (clusters), and investigate by simulation the likelihood of chains of a certain length and their disintegration. Next, we analyze in a formal way the formation of clusters in a model with a continuum of agents. Finally, we examine the (non-)monotonicity of the number of clusters with respect to the threshold for a given initial vector of opinions and in expectation

    No full text
International audienceThe tightening of migration policies increases the complexity of migrants' trajectories, forcing them to rely on a growing number of intermediaries whose actions influence their migration or settlement in a host country. Interactions with intermediaries, which take place in specific types of arrival and socialization locations, shape the journeys of migrants in the Île-de-France region. Their analysis questions the production of a differentiated reception depending on the intermediaries to which migrants have access and the representations they have of them.
