Economic Analysis of Ancient Greek Inscriptions and Literary Texts
No full textInternational audienceWhile the economic modeling of history has largely relied on stylized facts, we argue that, relying on complexity sciences, one can directly exploit the primary sources made available in digitized form, in particular for ancient Greece. We frame these textual corpora within an economic perspective, and interpret linguistic and social behaviors as outcomes of cost-minimization strategies, coordination games, and network effects. We analyze how material constraints, social incentives, and optimization principles shape textual production and naming conventions. The economic framework in which we embed our interpretation of the data furthers our understanding of ancient Greek society, and applying modern economic concepts to this ancient society also extends our understanding of core economic principles

Ancient Genomics Reveals the Origin, Dispersal, and Human Management of East Asian Domestic Pigs
No full textInternational audiencePigs are the most commercially important modern livestock animal in East Asia. Numerous aspects of their domestication history remain unclear, however, including the geographic center of their domestication, their subsequent dispersal routes, and the emergence of phenotypic traits specific to domestic pigs. To address these questions, we generated 21 nuclear genomes and 23 mitogenomes from ancient domestic pigs and wild boar from 5,800 BCE to 1,300 CE across China. Our analyses of newly generated and previously published Eurasian suid genomes confirmed Northern China and eliminated Southwestern China as the domestication origin of modern East Asian pigs. Following their association with people and the first appearance of black coat coloration, Northern Chinese domestic pigs dispersed alongside Yellow River millet farmers to the Yangtze River Basin and Southwestern China, which they admixed with local wild boar. A genome-wide loss of diversity and signatures of inbreeding in ancient Northern pigs may have been the result of intensified human management as early as 3,000 BCE. Our results reveal the geographic and temporal origins and subsequent dispersal and admixture of pigs in China, mirroring human migration and agricultural development history
La participation des citoyens aux expérimentations sur les modes de scrutin
No full textIn Situ experimentations provide opportunities for exchanges between researchers and citizens. This article describes their potential impact on research regarding political studies and voting rules in particular. It comments the citizens perception of these experiments, and which social expectations they raise. It also illustrates two cases for which the active participation of voters made research questions evolve: firstly, the importance of expressive voting for voters, and secondly, the forms and challenges of understanding and explaining voting rules. These cases all uncover the prominence of voters’ agency, and draw attention on the need for scientists’ axiological neutrality in political studies.Certains dispositifs d'expérimentation In Situ sont des occasions d'échanges entre chercheurs et citoyens. Cet article décrit quel impact ces interactions ont pu avoir dans la recherche sur les phénomènes politiques et, en particulier, pour l'étude des modes de scrutin. Après avoir présenté la réception de ces dispositifs et les attentes sociales qu'ils suscitent, l'article montre que la participation active des votants est en mesure de faire évoluer les questions de recherche. Nous l'illustrons dans deux domaines, d'une part sur l'importance que le vote d'expression a pour les votants, et d'autre part sur les formes et les enjeux de la compréhension et de l'explicabilité des modes de scrutin. Ces exemples attirent l'attention sur l'agentivité des votants et pointent la nécessaire neutralité axiologique des scientifiques dans les recherches sur les questions politiques
