    No full text
International audienceThe aim of this paper is to demonstrate the value of converting historical information into digital data, when looking at the spatial dimension of phenomena over the long term. The field of observation will be the urban morphology of Île de la Cité in Paris. This can be studied in some detail on the basis of Delagrive’s 1754 map, in comparison with the tax rolls of 1300. Once georeferenced, this map was vectorised to create three spatial reference layers : blocks, lots and buildings. These were used to carry out a morphological analysis of the island’s urban space and to identify six types of land use characterised by different urban fabrics and layouts : small shops on the bridges, the ordinary urban fabric corresponding to the dense housing of the lay population, the large institutional areas (the palace, Hôtel-Dieu, churches, and the slaughterhouse), the canonical district of Notre-Dame to the east, the Place Dauphine, and finally the houses of the canons of the Sainte-Chapelle inside the royal palace. Indicators such as surface area, the expanse and degree of convexity of the plots make it possible to objectify the specificity of these different types of urban fabric and to correlate them with the types of soil and social occupation.

International audienceWe introduce a method to estimate the failure time of a class of weighted k-out-of-n systems using the idea of rational expectations, which to the best of our knowledge is a new approach, not found elsewhere in the existing literature. This paper explores the predictive power of several statistical indicators (variance, skewness, kurtosis, Gini coefficient, entropy) and shows how they perform differently as the system approaches global failure. The proposed method is shown to outperform a benchmark prediction model obtained without rational expectations, and our results offer a panoramic view of the predictive power of the statistical indicators under different assumptions about the initial weight distributions

    Water

Water is a very vast topic, encompassing all periods and places of Antiquity. Many techniques and conceptions did not originate in the classical Greco-Roman world, but take their roots in the ancient Near East, Pharaonic Egypt and Bronze Age Greece which have been included in the discussion. Some uses of the resource have changed radically over the centuries, others not. Very different management practices, either rudimentary or more advanced, were employed contemporaneously across places. Rather than focusing on changes over time, this article therefore breaks down the subject into broad sub-sections and takes a synchronic ap-proach of Antiquity. After a few introductory remarks on ancient conceptions of water, it covers the key themes of water supply and uses, hydropower, rituals and risks. Given the breadth of the subject, some issues have been deliberately left out, such as water for survival in everyday life, cleaning and cooking, use in agriculture and livestock, health, medicine, and sanitation. These themes are not only addressed through textual evidence, but also through the results of decades of archaeological investigations. The integration of both aspects is indeed indispensable to form a global view of the matter and is now and became one of the most common approaches in this field of research

    Syndicalisme, travail et politique

National audienceCan subordination really be reduced in the workplace here and now, or is this idea simply naïve and ultimately wrong if the aim is to revolutionise the social ends of production as defined by the capitalist class structure?” A “controversy” centres on this question, which was initially formulated by Yves Clot and is principally addressed to certain types of work. It allows participants to clarify their points of view, their differences and their convergences in relation to a series of theoretical and political questions associated with approaches aimed at transforming work and the current or potential role of trade union organisations in this area.

International audienceIn England at the end of the Middle Ages, when political unrest was mounting - leading on several occasions to the spectacular deposition of monarchs - political poetry in English, a language in full development at the time, constituted a major field of literature, taken in the broadest sense, particularly between the end of the 14th century and the 1450s.However, it takes different forms. First of all, there are long mirrors of the prince or similar (the role of history, for example, is very important), apparently centred on the theory of good government but in reality firmly rooted in their time. This is the case, for example, with the main works of two poets well known across the Channel, Thomas Hoccleve and John Lydgate, long described as propagandists in the service of the Lancastrian dynasty that came to power in 1399.But these two poets, to name but two, also composed much shorter poems, known as poems of circumstance, for a particular person or event, sometimes on commission. However, the majority of the poems of circumstance, which flourished in connection with the internal political tensions of the 15th century, were anonymous. However, like other media, they played a part in the political communication efforts of each of the parties involved in these troubles. We will present two examples that reflect the richness of these different forms of political poetry - Richard the Redeless (c. 1401) and Mum and the Sothsegger (c. 1409), written shortly after the deposition of Richard II (1399), probably by the same author. It is as much a question of revisiting the notion of 'propaganda', the use of which in the medieval period seems tricky, as it is of suggesting that the author of these works was part of a continuum of political and cultural representations, while shaping them in a dynamic rather than passive movement
