From Stones to Screen: Open-Source 3D Modeling and AI Video Generation for Reconstructing the Coëby Necropolis
No full textInternational audienceThis study presents a comprehensive digital workflow for the archaeological investigation and heritage enhancement of the Coëby megalithic necropolis (Brittany, France). Dating to the Middle Neolithic, between the 4th and 3rd millennia BC, this chronology is established through stratigraphy, material culture, and radiocarbon dating. Focusing on cairns TRED 8 and TRED 9, which are two excavation units, we combined field archaeology, photogrammetry, and topographic data with open-source 3D geometric modeling to reconstruct the monuments’ original volumes and test construction hypotheses. The methodology leveraged the free software Blender (version 3.0.1) and its Bagapie extension for the procedural simulation of lithic block distribution within the tumular masses, ensuring both metric accuracy and realistic texturing. Beyond static reconstruction, the research explores innovative dynamic and narrative visualization techniques. We employed the FILM model for smooth video interpolation of the construction sequences and utilized the Wan 2.1 AI model to generate immersive video scenes of Neolithic life based on archaeologically informed prompts. The entire process, from data acquisition to final visualization, was conducted using free and open-source tools, guaranteeing full methodological reproducibility and alignment with open science principles. Our results include detailed 3D reconstructions that elucidate the complex architectural sequences of the cairns, as well as dynamic visualizations that enhance the understanding of their construction logic. This study demonstrates the analytical potential of open-source 3D modelling and AI-based visualisation for megalithic archaeology

Acquisitions, inventors’ turnover, and innovation: Evidence from the pharmaceutical industry
No full textInternational audienceThis paper examines the relationship between the post-merger decline in patenting among pharmaceutical firms, as observed in previous firm-level studies, and the following individual-level dynamics: (i) the exit of inventors from the innovation market, (ii) the departure of inventors from target firms to other research labs, and (iii) a decline in the innovative output of inventors who remain within the acquired firms. Using a large sample of target companies, we estimate that acquisitions are associated with an increase in exit rates of inventors between 7.6 and 17.5 percentage points and of their departure rates ranging from 12.2 to18.9 percentage points. We find similar results are obtained for large and small deals and that top inventors of targets are also more likely to exit or to leave when an acquisition takes place. Our results show that, for each inventor that exits the innovation market, around 2 patents are foregone, representing more than 30 percent loss of the expected output these scientists could have produced over their careers. Inventors who relocate to a different lab also generate 2 fewer patents compared to similar control scientists, representing a 30 percent decrease in their productivity too. Finally, inventors that stay at the acquired targets also experience a decrease in output of nearly one fewer patent. These results point to a significant decline in both human capital and consumer welfare, which call for a closer scrutiny of M&As

Ce que nous devons à l’Ecologie Politique Latino Américaine : entre dette intellectuelle et critiques constructivistes
No full textInternational audiencePlus qu'un article scientifique, ce texte est un une sorte d'essai réflexif sur le parcours de deux chercheurs français dans leur rapport à l'écologie politique latinoaméricaine, l'intérêt qu'elle a pu représenter et qu'elle représente encore pour eux, mais aussi les prises de distances critiques sur certains axes d'analyses. C'est surtout une invitation à poursuivre un dialogue entamé il y a plus de 20 ans avec le plus grand respect mais sans complaisance pour autant, en faveur d'une écologie politique latino-américaine vivante et proche du terrain et de ses complexités. L'intérêt de croiser nos regards est double. Nos terrains et les lectures qui les alimentent ne relèvent pas des mêmes espaces géographiques ni des mêmes axes d'analyses dans la littérature de l'écologie politique, mais elles entrent facilement en dialogue au moment de tirer un bilan des apports et des points de distanciation. Jean Foyer a travaillé surtout en Amérique Centrale, au Mexique et au Panama, en s'inspirant d'auteurs essentiellement Mexicains et Colombiens, sur des thématiques liées aux controverses autour des biotechnologies, à la conservation de la biodiversité et aux rôles des populations autochtones. Pierre Gautreau a plus travaillé dans le Cône Sud sur des questions d'extractivisme. Tous deux, nous considérons l'EPLA à la fois comme un mouvement à l'articulation des mondes scientifiques et activistes, avec lequel nous convergeons et divergeons parfois, mais aussi comme une « boîte à outils » conceptuelle et méthodologique. C'est justement par notre pratique des multiples terrains en Amérique latine que nous estimons pouvoir dire où, quand et pourquoi l'EPLA nous aide à comprendre ce que l'on observe…. mais aussi les situations où elle nous fait défaut. En faisant alterner nos deux voix, nous verrons donc dans une première partie ce que nos analyses doivent à l'EPLA avant de présenter certaines critiques d'inspirations constructivistes et que l'on veut constructives
