Obscene Theming as Strategic Commodification of Public Spaces.Analyzing the Material Outcomes of Staging Sexualized Feminine Bodies in Venice Beach
International audienceThe provocative display of feminine sexuality is a defining feature of many mainstream tourist destinations. In Venice Beach, such displays adopt a countercultural aesthetic while serving the interests of its private tourist economy. I argue that the sexualized staging of feminine bodies contributes to the obscene theming of public spaces—a mode of spatial production in which capitalist logics aestheticize, commodify, and ultimately privatize public spaces. Obscene theming operates through the aesthetic production of feminine bodies, which are incorporated into tourist imaginaries and fantasies of democratic freedom associated with Venice Beach. Drawing on Lukács’s theory of commodification, I contend that this staged obscenity functions to reinforce spatial injustices. It masks the labor involved in producing these embodied aesthetics by framing them as expressions of individual agency, while enabling a normative tourist economy that categorizes, hierarchizes, and regulates embodied performances of aesthetic transgression. I use obscenity as an analytical lens to examine how ludic culture operates within public spaces shaped by the visible stigmas of a maximally unjust urban context

Growth Under Rising Pressure: Weather Shocks in Sub-Saharan African Cities
Documents de travail du Centre d'Economie de la Sorbonne 2026.04 - ISSN : 1955-611X - eISSN : 2968-6687Sub-Saharan African cities are among the fastest growing in the world but face significant climatic risks. This study investigates how the four most important weather shocks (floods, heat waves, drought, and storms) have shaped the physical expansion of 5,721 cities in the region between 2000 and 2019. Using high-resolution remote sensing data combined with a panel of weather shocks observed over time, we find that floods, especially, reduce urban growth by 3-9%, most notably in western Africa. The effects are substantially amplified when floods follow heat waves, a common cooccurring combination. Droughts, when considered in the surrounding areas of cities, are associated with a 3% growth in urban areas. However, inverse effects are observed when treatment history is taken into account. Storms appear to accelerate the growth of wealthier towns, although the evidence is limited. Heatwaves alone show no clear effect. Our findings emphasize the need for integrated flood adaptation policies that take common co-occurring hazards equally into account. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of considering both the historical context and the spatial dimension of the shock in empirical work
Efficient computational methods for the estimation of ideal points in social sciences
Estimation of ideological positions among voters, legislators and social media users is central to many subfields in the social sciences. To achieve this, a particular class of Item-Response theory (IRT) models, called ‘ideal points’ models, employs a range of collective choice data: roll call votes, co-sponsorship records, social media engagement data, or word occurrences in speech. Estimation challenges in such models include model identification, data volume and sparsity, while inference robustness against noise is unknown, and ideological position measurements inherently lack ground truth data. These have led to several estimation approaches, from Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), which is computationally costly in large settings, to fast, albeit less flexible, factor analysis approximations. We formulate a unifying framework for a large family of ideal point models across disciplines and examine their computational complexity and accuracy under noisy data. We examine several synthetic scenarios and first introduce, from signal processing, the Iterated Conditional Modes estimation method for IRT models. Finally, we illustrate the applicability of our framework in a multi-dimensional ideal points inference problem for nearly 20,000,000 X (previously Twitter) users in France, the UK, and the US, along several ideology and issue dimensions calibrated with survey data
International audienceObjectivesMental health has emerged as a major policy issue at the crossroads of health, political, and ethical concerns. Declared a “national cause” in 2025 and 2026, it is receiving renewed attention while the associated theoretical paradigms and public programs are the subject of intense debate. In this context, an interdisciplinary workshop entitled “Mental Health Policies: Pluralistic Concepts and Perspectives” was held in June of 2025. The event aimed to foster dialogue between researchers, clinicians, and institutional actors regarding the tensions that structure the mental health landscape.Materials and methodsWe report the discussions that took place during this workshop based on an inductive analysis of the exchanges using Braun and Clarke's (2006) method. The corpus, consisting of all interactions, was coded into more than 1700 segments grouped into thematic axes, then manually refined.ResultsFirst, the lack of collective representation of care providers appears to be a persistent consequence of a fragmented health care organization. Care delivery modes and patient populations vary greatly, and the different paths (private practice, community-based care, academic–hospital settings, etc.) often operate in silos. While this diversity reflects initiative and innovation, it does not uphold an unified voice. Second, paradigmatic reframing is considered necessary, integrating prevention, diagnosis, and care. New tools make it possible to articulate biological, clinical, social, or linguistic data without imposing a single overarching model. The objective is to create transparent, interoperable and inclusive methodologies between biomedical, psychodynamic, and social approaches to strengthen user involvement. . Third, in a context of budgetary constraint, it is also crucial to re-allocate funding toward what is most useful for care. This requires identifying financing mechanisms that promote good practices through appropriate incentives and support the many teams engaged in experimentation and evaluation.DiscussionThis workshop shed light on the major forces at play: an acknowledged plurality of approaches, constructive disagreements over evidence-based models, and a shared commitment to tying together the complexity of clinical situations and organizational structures. Its main contribution lies in bringing into dialogue worlds that rarely meet : clinical practice, social sciences, and institutions. The exchanges showed how these perspectives can enrich one another when they are articulated together.ConclusionOur team effort is expected to grow through further meetings , particularly on: (i) research policy issues in mental health (data and commons); (ii) the role of care providers, users, and caregivers in decision-making processes; and (iii) the financing of psychiatry (allocated budgets and psychotherapy coverage).ObjectifsLa santé mentale s’impose comme un enjeu sociétal majeur à la croisée de préoccupations sanitaires, politiques et éthiques.
International audienceThe archives of the Collège de France currently preserve several pieces of correspondence between Marc Bloch and Marcel Mauss. These letters trace the initial contact and the evolution of their relationship within contexts shaped by their professional activities: from Mauss's establishment of the second series of L’Année sociologique to Bloch’s candidacies at the Collège de France, and the creation of Annales. The first three letters from Bloch to Mauss, which are the focus here, pertain to exchanges within the framework of these two emblematic journals of early 20th-century social science history and the networks of dissemination they maintained and depended upon. These letters subtly reveal, beyond the frictions between disciplines, the concrete activity carried out by a group of “society thinkers,” whose works mutually influenced and enriched one another.
