Extending Cliometrics to Ancient History Using Complexity
No full textInternational audienceCliometrics, concerned with the application of economic models to history, have left Antiquity aside because of the perceived lack of data available for this period. We argue that cliometrics do not have to specifically focus on the economy and, associated with complexity sciences, can operate on primary historical sources. Thus redefining cliometrics gives them access to the extensive corpora of historical material that have been digitized, in particular for ancient history, which has so far remained outside cliometrics’ purview. We discuss two examples of a cliometrics and complexity approach to ancient history: inscriptions and votive acts in ancient Greece
Incursions upon agricultural land within metropolitan peripheries: Deadlocks and geo-legal trajectories of regularization in Paris and Mexico-city
No full textInternational audienceWithin metropolitan peripheries, irrespective of the national or regional contexts, the clash between rural and urban areas is at the center of metropolitan production. This clash is a twofold movement with urban sprawl, on the one hand, and major environmental injunctions, on the other. By looking at the two contexts of Paris and Mexico City, our research objective is to comprehend peripheries as places magnifying competing land dynamics, leading to scenarios of crises as well as social, political and legal innovations. The methodology is based on the analysis of field observations and surveys, public databases and official documents, using a social geographical approach. The article analyzes how stakeholders within the land system control peripheral land, focusing on public authorities, property market actors, and developers. The goal is to show the limitations of this control and reveal how and why residents and citizen groups build arrangements and regularizations. At the end, this article aims to contribute to the debates on the land rules deadlocks in the urban-rural interface. From different deadlocks observed in each context, the comparison underlines converging geo-legal trajectories of land regulation

No full textInternational audienceThis communication focuses on the understanding of ancient female education, in fifth and fourth centuries BCE in Greece, through the lens of gender. Ancient female education did exist and deserves to be rendered visible through the examination of diverse archaeological artefacts. This study sheds light on ancient female education by following a progression structured around three stages in women’s lives: first, the gendered distinctions of the παῖς (pais), the child; second, the pedagogical practices associated with the παρθένος (parthenos), the unmarried young woman; and finally, the γυνή (gunê), the woman as educator. Approaching ancient female education through archaeology and a gendered perspective enables us to restore a voice to those who have remained inaudible within ancient literary history.Cette communication s’intéresse à l'appréhension de l'éducation féminine antique, dans la Grèce des Ve et IVe siècles a.C., au prisme du genre. L'éducation féminine antique existe et mérite d'être rendue visible par l'appréhension de différents vestiges archéologiques. Cette communication donne à voir l'éducation féminine antique en suivant une progression fondée sur trois périodes de la vie des femmes : dans un premier temps autour des distinctions genrées du παῖς (pais) de l'enfant, dans un second temps par les pratiques pédagogiques associées à la παρθένος (parthenos) jeune fille non mariée et, enfin, dans un dernier temps par la γυνή (gunê) femme éducatrice. S'intéresser à l'éducation féminine antique, par l'archéologie et au prisme du genre, permet de redonner voix à des inaudibles de l'histoire littéraire ancienne

No full textInternational audienceMagistrat fréquemment associé aux litiges ruraux, le juge de paix est aussi une figure de la conflictualité urbaine. Plus encore : il est, dans le cadre de ses fonctions, un observateur direct des transformations urbaines. Il est même régulièrement appelé à se prononcer sur les effets de l'expansion urbaine, bien qu'il ne parvienne pas à en résoudre tous les problèmes. Les quartiers périphériques de Marseille, rattrapés par l'urbanisation au cours de la seconde moitié du xixe siècle, fournissent un terrain d'enquête propice à la compréhension de l'action régulatrice de la justice de paix en matière d'actualisation du parcellaire et des droits de propriété
