Civic Education Outcomes After Emergency Lockdowns: International Evidence from the COVID-19 Pandemic
Background: In early 2020, nations around the globe responded to the rapidly developing COVID-19 pandemic by implementing emergency containment measures to slow the spread of the virus. Educational systems were widely impacted as they made the difficult decision to close schools affecting over 1.5 billion students globally.
Aims: This study aims to characterize the relationship between COVID-19 lockdown stringency and several secondary student civic education outcomes.
Sample: We use data on more than 100,000 grade 8 students from 15 educational systems that participated across multiple cycles of the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS).
Methods: We utilize multiple regression models with country- and cycle-fixed effects to estimate the relationship between the duration and stringency of COVID-19 containment measures and changes in grade 8 student civic education outcomes.
Results: We find that longer school closures and greater lockdown stringency were associated with greater declines in average civic knowledge and trust in civic institutions. They were also associated with increases (or smaller decreases) in intentions to protest or expectations to participate in politics. Less consistent evidence was found regarding the relationship with expected participation in elections.
Conclusions: The findings provide valuable insights into the associations between lockdown measures and early secondary student civic education outcomes, highly relevant for understanding how the pandemic and related policies may have influenced the future citizens of the world
Moral Reflection, Learning from Outcomes
If moral learning from the consequences of past decisions was perfect, then people would quickly unlearn all of the biases that negatively affect their moral decision-making. This does not seem to be the case (Maier, Cheung, Bartos, & Lieder, 2023). Therefore, the purpose of this experiment is to identify bottlenecks and biases in moral learning from the consequences of past decisions. We hope that identifying these biases and bottlenecks will enable us to design a reflection script that helps people to overcome them.
Many biases in moral learning might be a downstream consequence of biases in how people evaluate the outcomes of their decisions. One of these key bottlenecks is that people don't pay attention to others' wellbeing, but they do pay attention to their own wellbeing. The broad question of this experiment is: "What are the biases in people's evaluations of their decision outcomes acting as the biggest obstacles to them learning to become more altruistic?
More money, more effect? Employment effects of job search services of different intensity
Despite being widely regarded as effective labor market policies, the impact of job search services on employment remains contested. Recent research challenges the assumption that the intensity of such programs is directly related with its effectiveness. We evaluate the effects of two treatments of an Italian active labour market program called Assegno per il Lavoro. Each intervention is made up of a voucher to fund job search assistance and a performance-based payment related to job search intermediation. Participants are assigned to a certain group with a certain treatment endowment that is increasing as a function of a scoring variable. Leveraging this design, we applied a regression discontinuity analysis to estimate effects on both employment duration and employment quality. First, being assigned to an intermediate-dose treatment slightly increased the probability of finding an open-ended employment, but this did not generate an increment in the average of days worked. Second, being assigned to a high-dose treatment only augmented the mean and the median of the distribution of days worked during the second semester and it did with a greater prevalence of short temporary contracts. Third, different treatment assignments barely changed the reception of job search assistance, so the impacts stem from job search intermediation. The main policy implication is a shift from a focus on intensity to a focus on other design features
MARTE: Methodological Analysis and ReporTing Evaluation of both Resistance Training Trials and Resistance Training-Based Systematic Reviews
Methodological Analysis and ReporTing Evaluation of both Resistance Training Trials and Resistance Training-Based Systematic Reviews (MARTE) is a project with four systematic reviews (SRs), two of which examine the completeness of reporting of traditional resistance training (RT) and velocity-based resistance training (VB-RT) interventions in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the effects of RT on muscular hypertrophy and health or athletic performance outcomes in adults and older adults, using items from the Consensus on Exercise Reporting Template (CERT) checklist. The remaining two SRs will critically appraise the evidence from systematic reviews that assessed the effects of traditional RT and VB-RT on muscular hypertrophy and health or athletic performance outcomes in adults and older adults
Evaluating the psychometric properties of the Five Factor Machiavellianism Inventory in a Canadian Sample
3.1. The Five Factor Machiavellianism Inventory (FFMI) is a 52-item self-report questionnaire that measures the construct of Machiavellianism. Those who score high in Machiavellianism are said to be callous, manipulative, planful, and status-driven, and use manipulation and antagonism strategically in order to achieve status and desired goals. (Christie & Geis, 1970; Collison et al., 2018). Each item corresponds to one of 13 subscales, and each subscale corresponds to one of three factors: antagonism (e.g., manipulation, cynicism), planfulness (i.e., deliberation, order), and agency (e.g., assertiveness, achievement). The FFMI resolves a key limitation of previous measures of Machiavellianism, as the FFMI was designed to be distinct from psychopathy. However, the psychometric properties of this scale have not been investigated in a Canadian Sample. In addition, previous studies confirmed the structure of the scale using exploratory structure equation modelling, so its factor structure has not been examined using a traditional confirmatory factor analysis approach. Therefore, the goal of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the FFMI using traditional confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory structural equation modelling
