    Researching Russia with Digital Trace Data

    The Russo-Ukrainian war and the deterioration of the relationship between Russia and the West made the application of traditional social science research methods, such as surveys and field work, difficult for researchers. It is likely that in the foreseeable future students of Russia will have to increasingly rely on the data that can be collected online. Using these data has defined the field of computational social science and has many analytical advantages. This paper provides a review of the sources of digital trace data for Russia and of the studies that used them for the analysis of political communication and behaviour, education, labour markets, discrimination, and the Russo-Ukrainian war

    Science and performance and injury risk in male 15s rugby students: a systematic review

    Researchers have stated that to optimise sports performance, 15s Rugby Union (RU) junior athletes undergo development and changes, a process known as temporal dependence. Furthermore, sports performance is guided by the complex interaction of physiological and psychological variables to overcome internal and external constraints. Additionally, the role of sports physiology is vital during the preparation of younger athletes, as physiological deficiencies can compromise performance, leading to an increased risk of non-contact injury. Indeed, researchers have reported that male student-athletes sustain a high rate of acute injuries and experience a higher rate of new injuries, which exceeds the non-contact injury rate observed in professional rugby athletes. Currently, the available data remain ambiguous for any specific cohort of RU, as performance results vary by age group and level of play. Furthermore, an earlier publication highlighted “one must consider the validity of the tests to the sport in question” (Turner & Stewart, 2013) and a recent systematic review emphasised that “It is vital to recognize that the frequency of use does not necessarily equate to the superiority of a test” (Asimakidis et al., 2025). Therefore, the objective of this systematic review was to evaluate whether evidence-based principles were used to assess physiological factors affecting performance in 15s RU male student-athletes with a mean age of 19-20 years and an age range of 17-22 years. Additionally, following the European College of Sport Science Position Statement that specific exercise programmes have proven to reduce the risk of non-contact injuries (Steffen et al., 2010) and research indicating that unreliable testing protocols limit conclusions (Warneke et al., 2025; Weakley et al., 2023), concerns are raised about the risk of non-contact injuries, we briefly summarise the importance of evidence-based principles required in each area of applied sports science that influences performance and non-contact injuries in this cohort to encourage adherence to established dogmas

    Network Accuracy Across Local, Mesoscale, and Global Structures using Stochastic Block Models

    Researchers apply network psychometric methods across many levels of analysis—from understanding causal pathways (edges) and symptoms that drive comorbidity (local) to uncovering community structures (mesoscale) and group differences (global). The validity of inferences at each level depend on the accuracy of network estimation methods. To date, simulation studies have focused almost exclusively on edge recovery using data generating mechanisms that lack known community structures. In this large-scale simulation study, we evaluated four network estimation methods (EBICglasso variants, GGMmod, GGMncv, GGMnonreg) across four levels of analysis (edge, local, mesoscale, global) using Stochastic Block Models with empirically-informed edge weight distributions derived from 293 psychological networks. We generated continuous, polytomous, and dichotomous data across various conditions to provide concrete guidelines for applied researchers. Overall, regularization methods (EBICglasso) excelled in smaller samples (≤ 1,000) and dichotomous data whereas non-convex (GGMncv) and non-regularized (GGMnonreg) methods excelled in larger samples (≥ 2,500) and continuous data, reflecting a trade-off between stability and desirable asymptotic properties. Across conditions, GGMmod had the most balanced performance, making it the recommended general purpose method. Critically, local measure accuracy varied substantially, with network loadings being most robust and bridge strength being most unreliable (even in ideal conditions). We established interpretation benchmarks for global metrics (Frobenius norm and Jensen-Shannon Similarity) and identified community detection as robust except under challenging conditions (small samples and dichotomous data). Our results demonstrate that estimation methods should be selected based on sample characteristics, data type, and the level of analysis most relevant to the researcher’s aims

    Building Courage, Strength, and Knowledge: Mindfulness Training Reduces Psychological Threat and Increases Engagement in College Physics

    Many college students experience introductory physics as psychologically threatening. In a pre registered RCT, we applied the challenge-threat model to describe patterns of threat in introductory physics and test whether a five-day mindfulness training could reduce threat and increase engagement among undergraduates. Course-wide surveys (N = 954) screened students for the RCT and revealed roughly half of students experience psychological threat. Students identified with systemically excluded were more likely to experience psychological threat while systemically advantaged students were more likely to experience psychological challenge in their introductory physics course. In the RCT (N = 149), mindfulness training reduced psychological threat and fostered greater engagement in introductory physics. Importantly, reduced psychological threat mediated the positive effects of mindfulness training on physics engagement. The results demonstrate that mindfulness can help students manage stress more effectively by reducing psychological threat and fostering engagement in contexts like introductory physics

    Social Desirability Bias In Online Surveys: An Experimental Assessment

    Social scientists have long debated the extent to which social desirability bias affects online survey responses. We argue that the a priori most promising way to measure it is through a global manipulation at the survey's outset. If effective, this approach allows researchers to (1) isolate social desirability from confounders, (2) verify manipulation success, and (3) assess effects across multiple outcomes. Using well-powered survey experiments in the United States and Denmark, we provide a comprehensive assessment of how social desirability can be successfully manipulated and to what extent it biases online survey responses. Our findings show that some treatments fail to induce perceptions of being observed, while others succeed but do not alter outcomes most likely to be affected by social desirability bias. Beyond offering guidelines for future research designs, these results imply that researchers should be less concerned of social desirability bias in online surveys than previously thought
